I couldn't go back to the thread on my archaic AOL news browser. I believe
"Sare Jahan Se" is in Hindi and Vande Mataram is in Sanskrit. Can anyone post
the lyrics of "Sare Jahan Se?" Thanks.

Sare Jahan Se is an Urdu composition by Md. Iqbal - not exactly Hindi.

Whether Vande Mataram us pure Sanskrit is arguable. I dont know enough Sanskrit
to say this with certainty. AFAIK, it is written in Bengali 'Suddha Bhasa', a
style commonly used by Bengali authors in the last century (and much of this
century). It is quite close to Sanskrit. Different authors used different levels
of the language in their writing. With Tagore, the level was closer to the
'Chalit Bhasa' (spoken language), with Bankim, it was closer to Sanskrit. In
fact, Bankim's writings are difficult to understand sometimes even for a person
who know Bengali well. This song is a part of the Bengali novel 'Ananda Math'.

Interestingly, they had this song in a Bengali textbook in high school.
