Source - S V Gokhale's note on the singer in Govindrao
Tembe's book : 'Maajhaa Sangeet Vyaasang'.
Miyaa.N Jaan (about 1880 - 1919) was known for his taan.
He became famous under his nickname. His real name is not
known. Miyan Jan Khan was nephew and disciple of Ali
Baksh. Ali Baksh is remembered as part of the Jarnail-
Karnail duo. Fateh Ali alias Aliya Fattu was the Colonel
and Ali Baksh the General. Jarnail and Karnail were not
related. Miyan Jan's maternal grandfather (grand-dad in
Bozo-speak), Miyan Kalu Khan, was Tanras Khan's disciple.
It is Gokhale's guess that Miyan Jan's famous taan should
be traceable to Tanras Khan (died in 1890). Tembe has
ranked Miya Jan among the most tayyaar singers he ever
heard. But he did not bother much about 'asthai
bharanaa', relying rather heavily on taan-baazi.
Naturally, his singing was associated with drut laya with
special affinity for taar shadja. He had mastered Sohini
and ADaaNaa. His voice was known for its power, natural
lagaav, sweetness and amplitude. His taan spanned three
octaves with ease. Its firat was incredible. He had a
special gift for swooping unexpectedly and thrillingly on
the sam straight out of the taan. But his singing was
dominated by drut khayal, Tappa-s and tarana-s. His ego
was huge. He could not get along with anybody. He moved
to Mumbai from Delhi and had a long stay in Maharashtra.
He did not leave behind any shiShya-paramparaa.
Has Miyan Jan's voice been preserved on the 78s ?

Patience.....time is on my side. I will disappoint no one, least of
all myself. I have attained much of the information that I need (I
have found out that dn has made many an enemy-quite known for his
mortoo batamiz ways) and now all that is left is to confront this
gandu and see how his mouth performs in person. Poor dn-He won't see
me coming-He doesn't know who to look for........Always wondering if
that angreezi is Josh, or is that gora Josh.....Doesn't matter really.
I suspect that when dn gauges what he's in for....The apologies will
stream like the su-su that comes out his mouth. But we'll see won't
we.
I'm rather excited really.........what hideous deformities or lack of
physical attributes does dn suffer from that he must act in such a way
to cover? I'll post pictures of our meeting for all to see...Where
your mundir best dn. Hey dn-I'll give you a hint............Ever met
a gora that could speak your language????

This poster Mr Naniwadekar declares all artists as bad. Only Marathi
artists are good for him. LOL. There is no regional bias in music. Any
region can have good musicians. Okay? You should have open mind. It is
easy to target artists. Playing music yourself is a difficult art.
And Mr Josh says he is sure about his sitar skill. But when others
criticize him he takes different approach and threatens. Mr Josh, do
you think artists like Ustad Vilayat Khan go and challenge their
critics in person? LOL. It is because they care about music and
practice hard for all their time. Sorry for hurting your sentiments
guys. I am not gyani like you and have not learnt music. But it is
better to be common music fan and not keep fighting and using dirty
language against others on a serious forum. Forum is only for
discussing a peaceful topic like music. Your knowledge is wastage
without good behavior. So please Mr Naniwadekar, Mr Bodas and Mr Josh,
you stop fights and allow others to discuss music. You can discuss
your differnces using email and not ruin other people's mood every day
on a public forum.
