A song I heard years back as a kid has been in my mind lately...the
mukhda goes something like "Arth Shoonya ??? Maza Haa ??? Jeevanaacha"
(in spite of Marathi being my mother-tongue, I can unfortunately not
put it together any better than this). I remember the tune to be nice,
the singing okay-ish, and I was curious about its relevant
details...anyone?
Thanks in advance,
Sanjeev
arth shoonya bhaase maj haa kalah jiivanaachaa.
Singer - Ashalata Wabgaonkar
Composer : (Who else but) Jitendra Abhisheki
Naatak : Matsyagandha, IIRC.
The song has been released on a CD Set on Natya Sangeet.
- dn
Is there a concept of composer in Natya Sangeet? I have few Natya
Sangeet tapes with me and I observe that the same song has been rendered
by two different artist. I thought Natya Sangeet songs are predefined
for ages (based on the drama) and all singers like
Jiterndra Abhisheki/Prabhakar Karekar/Madhuvati Dandekar do is to sing
it in their own style.
rk-
For very old songs (esp. in the dramas which were first
performed in the 19th C), the composer's identity is more
often not known than known. Around 1900 and beyond,
Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale composed tunes for some dramas. From
1910 onwards (example - Maanaapamaan), Govindrao Tembe
entered the field. So composer for lot of the songs in
that era *is* known. However, in practice, a composer's
name is not mentioned on commercial releases of
natyageets of that era. Whether this is so for any
principle or mere historical reasons is difficult
to say. Bakhale and Tembe preferred not
to compose new tunes and they used classical cheezs or
thumris of Punjabi or Poorab style or light tunes which
they had liked as their material. Oftentimes, the tune
was given to the playwright and he would fit words around
it. This does not mean that all the tunes were borrowed.
'man raam rangii rangiile', made popular by Sawai
Gandharva and Bhimsen Joshi, is Tembe's original tune.
(But it is not a natyageet.) Because of the nature of
natyasangeet, it is susceptible to major tweaks. Even
similar interpretations by two singers of a natyageet
tend to sound far less straight-jacketed than (say) a
tandem film song. Of course, artists were free to rework
a tune significantly or discard it completely in favour
of a new tune. But I won't take any exception to your
statement that 'Natyageets are predefined for ages' so
long as you bear in mind just what it should be taken to
mean and what it should not be taken to mean.
Composer for Natyageets which were written in the 1960s
and later are known in most cases. (I don't have access
to any comprehensive list-book like Hindi Film Geet Kosh,
though.) Abhisheki was very much the top dog among
composers. The tunes chosen were always subject to
topical matters like the type of singing talent
available. But nothing stops an artist from exercising
his creativity since the idiom allows far greater
flexibility than some other genres of light songs.
Take for example : kaLaa jyaa laagalyaa jiivaa. Lata's
rendition of Vasant Prabhu's tune is so tight that it is
difficult to imagine any major reworking upon that
kernel. But when a natyageet was based on the same words,
the tune afforded far greater scope for aalaapii and
taans in keeping with the idiom and consequently, that
song can sound much different in different hands even
with the same kernel.

Thanks for an extremely informative posts.
It looks like you rate Jitendra Abhisekhi very highly.
Right now in front of me I have his CD Mastyagandha te Mahananda
part 2. Even though I bought it last Nov (when I was in India),
I haven't listened to it since my dad gave very poor review of
this CD when I was in India. How do you rate it.
thanks.

Email id is bogus.
Songs 1,2,3,4,7 are very good. #s 2 and 3 really call for
Vasantrao Deshpande's genius; but still they can be enjoyed.
They are stupendous compositions. 'ashii sakhii sahacharii'
is a rare instance of Sampoorna Malkauns in light clothing.
#s 5,9,16 are by Abhisheki himself plus Vasantrao.
Needless to say, they are gems. CD # 1 is much better.
Four songs by Vasantrao in 'Katyaar Kaaljaat Ghusali' were
released on 45, then 33 and later cassette/CD compilations.
Vasantrao's Natyageet releases are easily available.
Check out 'ghei chhand' in sawf archives (Bhimpalas and
Todi features).
Many songs in Abhisheki's voice
(Natyageets plus Bhajans) have been released on CDs.
Nearly all of it is of incredibly high quality. Abhisheki
used to have problems warming up in his concerts plus
terrible luck with diabetes. But if he struck form, he
was as good as anybody else. He was one of the most
cerebral composers ever. It is a commentary on Hindi
Film world of 1960s that he wasn't asked to compose
music for even one film. If you want to select just one
singer to sing in a temple and fill the atmosphere with
divine glow, Abhisheki Buwa is your man.

Has Jitendra Abhishekhi composed music for films?
Sanjeev: If you want to listen to it again, Ashalata's version is available
on coolgoose.com, along with her version of another song from the same
play - 'gard sabhavati raan saazaNii'. "Okay-ish" is a very good description
of Ashalata's singing :), but it sounded pretty good when one watched her on
stage. Don't go by her current appearances in Hindi films: she was a pretty
good stage actress.
Warm regards,
Abhay
Can any one tell us what this idiot is talking about

1. Bhaskar buba bhakhale gave music for saubhdra, swayamvar and
draupdi
2. Tembe gave for manapaman
3. master dinanath has redone all tembe compositions for manapaman and
i guess he used to compose himself for his dramas.
4. jitendra abhisheki gave music for few dramas like katyar kalajat
ghusali,yayati-devyani,he bandha reshamache, mastyagandha,
5. Ram marathe gave music for most of vidhyadhar goghkale drama like
madanchi manjiri and lots more.
6. nilkantha abhyankar composed for swarsamradhynai
7. Vasant desai composed for dev dinanaghari dhavala and fewmore

Could you enlist the songs from this play and also who sang them originally?
(Wasn't Nilkantha Abhyankar working with C Ramchandra for some time?)

Which are the songs in this play apart from "Runanubandhachya"?
As usual, I can't refrain from putting in my $0.02 worth :-)
Some more plays and Composers [including composers who modified original
versions]
Kanhopatra - N. V. Kulkarni
Shikkakatyar - Y. N. Tipnis
Amritsiddhi - Vasant Shantaram Desai
Saubhadra - Annasaheb Kirloskar
Sanyast' Khadg' (I don't know how else to spell it in English) - V. D.
Savarkar [I have "Priya Ge Nijanki Jaata" sung by Smt. Asha Khadilkar]
Patwardhan - Govindrao Tembe
Ekach Pyala - V. C. Gurjar
Speaking of the original topic, Pandit Bhimsen Joshi sang Lalit Bhatyar
during an interview in the Marathi programme "Pratibha ani Pratima" many
years back. I can't recall the exact song he sang, but I think it was "
Astaana Yati Satridha" from Saubhadra [That's the spelling I have in the
cassette containing a version of the same song sung by Smt. Jaymala
Shiledar]
Regarding Anand's comment about Vidhyadhar Gokhale's compositions, I have a
cassette where Vasant Desai has composed music for three of his plays.
Cheers
Arun
Your list is all wrong.
Swatantrya-Veer Savarkar was a great poet but he was
nowhere near being a music composer. Vi Sii Gurjar
and Vasant Shantaram Desai were writers, too, and
had no gift for composition. In short, you have listed
lyricists for the dramas, not composers.
Saubhadr - Annasaheb Kirloskar used to leave some
situations for songs to be filled by Govind Ballal Deval.
Deval has supplied lyrics for at least one of Kirloskar's
dramas. So any claim of authorship of a poem in Kirloskar's
dramas may need careful scrutiny. Composing tunes for
Kirloskar's dramas was a joint task, I think. Kirloskar did
play some part in it but just how big a part, I am not sure.
He did use tunes of some of his favourite songs. One aim
was to draw from a wide variety of sources with a view
towards entertaining as many sections of the target
audience as possible.
Patwardhan - This is one case in which you have mentioned
the composer's name correct. Govindrao Tembe composed
Natyageets in this drama. BUT he may also have written the
songs himself. You may have picked his name from the
lyricist-name column like other names in your list.
Sanyast Khadg - It is accepted by researchers that Vasudev
Shastri Khare wrote some/many songs in this drama. But he
and Savarkar had decided to avoid mentioning Khare-shastri's
name. We don't know which songs were written by Savarkar
himself and which by Shastri Buwa.
Ekach Pyaalaa - Ram Ganesh Gadkari (alias Govindagraj)
wrote this drama. He was a great poet and AFAIK he wrote
the songs in this drama himself. But I have read that he had
had some help with some songs in some of his drama(s).
I don't remember the exact details. V S Khandekar was
very young (about 21) when Gadkari died in 1919 but
I think Khandekar had written some songs for Gadkari.
V S Gurjar (not V C Gurjar) may also have had some
association with Gadkari but I had not seen Ekach Pyala
attributed wholesale to Gurjar before. One of Gurjar's
(perhaps distant) grandsons told me that he was a cranky
but methodical Kokanastha Brahmin who used to keep
dry wood ready in his house in a safe place before every
monsoon in his old age. He did not want his funeral to be
held up because of shortage of dry wood in the wet season.
- dn
On second thought, I guess Kirloskar *is* automatically
credited for writing songs in the dramas authored by him,
a bit like Naushad and S D Burman getting credit for all
songs in their films dspite persistent reports about their
deputies handling significantly major portion of the task.

Which song in Ekach Pyala has been attributed to Vi Sii Gurjar
on your cassette/CD ?

Another motive behind storing dry wood was that it
cost extra in Konkan in the rainy season. Gurjar resented
this practice of driving up the cost of that necessity (wood)
and was determined to outsmart the wood suppliers.
Like Punjabis are famous for their coarseness, Konkanastha
Brahmins are famous for being stingy. Some (stupid) Marathi
fellows regard them the way machiavellian Catholic nuns
regard Protestants.

Another Koknastha??????? May be Kirlosker also??????? What about Pul
sheekar and Pul Sule or Ja wadekar.
Anything is possible

Can someone verify this?

I have read that Gadkari decided to do something about
Bal Gandharva's image of doing roles in nice clothes (shalu,
navvaarii (nine-yards 'saree')). He vowed that he would present
the Gandharva in torn clothes. So he created the role of
Sindhu who is reduced to poverty because of her husband's
fondness for alcohol.
I asked a friend about this. He says it is mentioned in the
preface to Ekach Pyaalaa that all songs except one were
written by Gurjar. He does not remember which was
the lone song contributed by Gadkari. Sundarabai (Jadhav)
composed the tunes.
Sanyast Khadg - The fellow who wrote some songs in the
drama was not Vasudeo Shastri Khare. It was Shankar
Balaji Shastri of Nagpur. I have been told this 5-10 times
by now. But I keep forgetting. I keep associating the name
'Vasudeo' with Sanyast Khadg's Shastri Bowa.

Another one Vasantrao used to sing Samayee Sakha, which was of course
Dinanath used to sing.
Manapman was about Rich and Poor, Saubhadra we all know. Can
Dhenuvallabh tell us what was Sanyasta Khadga was about. (Tembe says
it was about Pandav and Kaurav right.
Well you have to do it fast. At Pig speed. We remember how fast you
wrote thee post one after another when you panicked
After PLD now it is Savarkar's turn to tell lies
Savarkar wrote three Marathi Sangeet Nataks. Sanysta Khadga is one of
them. The other two are in Govinrao Tembes book. Dhenuvallabh the Pig
may enlighten us. This is good chance for the Pig to Shine and another
opportunity to brown nose a few..
The first Pad is Kiti Tari Sulalit Sahaj Geeti, Taar ne bahu tani.
There are 22 songs in this play alone.
Regarding other plays I would like to know the titles from The Pig
Nani aka Dhenuvalbh.
Savarkar was also known as Maha Kavi. The two Maha Kavya he wrote are
1) Kamala He wrote this in Andaman.
2) Gomantak. Purvardh and Uttarardh. He wrote under Pen Name
Maharshtra Bhaat.
3) Mahasagar
4)Virahochwaas
Kesri Sept 18 1934,Dainik Kal Pune Diwali Ank 10 Nov. wrote articles
on Kamala
His Deergh Kavya are
1)Akansha
2) Murti Duji tee
3) Maranonmukh Shaiyyevar.
There are about 78 Kavita,
Shrimant Madhavraoanch Rung. This is Phatka he wrote this when he was
11
Chaphekar Ni Ranade Yanjvareel Phatka. He was 16
It is simply stupid to even think someone else wrote Pad in his plays.
Only The Big PIG Dhenuvallbh AKA Nani VD ker can talk like this.

The Pig Nabivadekar is lost looking into his Tembe's Book; Take your
time. You will come with your favorite line " My friend told me" .
Keep brown nosing others. You are good at it.
Well The other Sangeet Natak of Savarkar are
1)USHSHAP
2)UTTARKRIYA
I AM STILL WAITING FOR THE PIG DHENUVALLABH TO ANSWER OTHER QUESTIONS.
All answers are in in Govindrao's book.
Well I will give a clue. It is Sulochana who sings
Sukatatchi Jagi ya, Jari kee Fule Galat Pakli Pakli
Umalati na tya kalika, Jya ( Dhru )
Parantu Sunder Kalya Paklya, Phulati hi Jagi ya,
Visar na he vaitagi Tuzia.
Who else but Savarkar write these beautiful lines. Only the Pig
Dhenuvallabh Naniwadekar knows perhaps.
