RMIMers/RMICers,

I know this song is from the naatak "Yayaati Devayaani", but I am
blanking on the original singer (female voice, I believe) in whose
voice the most widely available rendition seems to be. Any help?

So you mean that Archana sang it at the age of 11 ? :-)

The original , AFAIK was sung and composed by Pt Jitendra Abhisheki

Yes she used to sing it really well when I heard 7-8 years back...not
heard her later.

It is quite suspect that Archana Kanhere is the "original" singer, the
drama
being so much older.. Possibly "Abhisheki-ji" sung..

In any case, check out Manjusha Kulkarni-Patil's rendition of the same
-
on YouTube. In my opinion, this is a more emotionally charged and
better sung than Ms. Pandit.

Just my 2 cents.

Sanjeev's questions was specifically about a rendition in a female
voice. I don't think it has been released on record/cassette/CD in any
other female voice before the Archana Kanhere version came out in the
early 1990s; the EP released in the late 1960s, IIRC, contained only
the Ramdas Kamat songs. I don't know who sang it on stage when the
play was first released (Ashalata, perhaps?). There is also an Asha
Khadilkar version floating around.

A version that Devaki Pandit sang live ("Nakshatranche Dene" on
Abhisheki) is available on YouTube

I agree - Manjusha Kulkarni's rendition is magnificient and moving...
I first heard Dr. Aniket Saraf's enchanting renditon on youtube and
have since heard Prathamesh Lagate, Devki Pandit, Shaunak Abhisheki
sing it... I just can't seem to have enough of it - I wish I could
find Pt. Jitendra Abhishekiji's and Archana Kanhare's rendition as
well..

Wonder what it would be like to hear Ajit Kadkade and Kishoriji sing
this marvel...

I was trying to recall the original cast. Thanks!

It has to be Ashalata because it is a female song in the original play.

I did mention Ashalata as the probable heroine in my last post above,
but I wasn't sure it was her. In any case, I don't recall a recording
of her version of this song being released - did it feature on the EP?
I only remember the Ramdas Kamat numbers.

A friend needs the meaning of this song. I don't know Marathi - can
someone help? Thanks for your help.

Here is a rushed and inadequate attempt. I hope someone can refine it!

he suraano chandra whaa
chaa.ndaNyaache koSh maajhyaa priyakaraalaa pohachavaa

O notes, become the moon
Send a treasure of moonbeams to my beloved!

waat ekaakii tamaachii
harawalelyaa maanasaachii
barasunii aakaash saare
amR^itaane naahawaa

The path of darkness is lonely
As is the mind that is lost
Rain down in torrents
And bathe the sky in nectar

Thanks very much for this, and to all the respondents for answering my
original query.

The published book of Yayati aani Devayani lists the following details
of the first performance -
The first performance of this play was done by 'Kalamandir' on 20th
August 1966 at Dr. Bhalerao Natyagruha, Mumbai.

Cast -
Sharmishtha - Kanhopatra
Devayani - Lata Kale
Yayati - Ma. Dattaram
Kach - Ramdas Kamat
others.

Direction - Gopinath Savkaar
Music - Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki

As the song in question is sung by Sharmishtha in the play, we have to
assume that the first rendition of it was by Kanhopatra. Though I have
no idea whether it was ever recorded and/or published.

On a related note, the first line of the song in the play as written
by V. V. Shirwadkar, is -
he swaranno chandra vha (हे स्वरांनो चंद्र व्हा) so we must also
assume that Pt. Abhishekiji changed it to He suraanno (हे सुरांनो
चंद्र व्हा).

regards,

Sushrut
