A duet: two musicians singing or playing together on eaqual footing,
not with one accompanying the other.

Traditionally, jugalbandi was only performed by members of the same
gharana.

In recent years, some perfectly normal concerts have been advertised
as "sitar/tabla jugalbandi" etc. This is in very poor taste :)

Most such CDs aren't very good. The dhrupad-singing Dagar brothers
used to perform in jugalbandi, as do their students the Gundechas.

Gundecha brothers: RAGA DARBARI (Audiorec)
Gundecha brothers: DARSHAN (Sense World Music)
Gundecha brothers: TEARS ON A LOTUS (Sense World Music)

Senior Dagar brothers: DHRUPAD & KHYAL (Unesco Auvidis)
Junior Dagar brothers: RAGA KAMBHOJI (Music of the World)

Other famous jugalbandi includes Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan. I'm
not sure I would recommend any of these. (Dozens of more diverse
pairings have been released recently - shehnai/sitar, sitar/violin,
Bhimsen/Balamurali.)

In south India, jugalbandi are common between two veenas or violins.
Here I could perhaps recommend Raajeswari Padmanabhan & Sreevidhya
Chandramouli: MUSIC OF THE VEENA II (JVC). It's a good CD, though a
pretty uneven example of jugalbandi, as the mother overpowers the
daughter.

The JVC and Music of the World CDs I think are out of print. Let me
know if you want me to send you copies!

Yes what is in the URL is very true.

Y often becomes J

Our friend Jasraj may be Yas(h)raj, some have called him Ras Raj. But
that is a different storey.
