Heard Ajoy Chakraborty presenting "Sangeet Sarita" on Vividh Bharti
this morning. He is running a series where he is supposed to be
presenting different facets of Bade Ghulam Ali's repertoire. Today, he
introduced the BGAK recording saying (not verbatim), "This is the raga
Bhoopali, which not sung by too many singers. BGAK was one of of the
few who sang it." He then presented snatches of vilambit and drut
recordings by BGAK.

AFAIK, Bhoopali is the same as Bhoop - isn't it? If yes, where does
Ajoy C get off saying it is not sung by too many people? If not, what
is the difference? To my (completely untutored) ears, the recording he
played sounded like Bhoop alright.

Interesting sidelight: the interviewer was Kabban Mirza (of "Razia
Sultan" fame). This series was apparently recorded in 1995. Any idea
what he does today? Does he sing at all?

Warm regards,
Abhay

They are the same - certainly many students of music will at least
learn bandishes in Bhoop/Bhoopali reasonably early on. However, AC may
be referring to the frequency (or lack thereof) with which Bhoop/
Bhoopali is *performed* nowadays despite it's seeming simplicity due
to its pentatonic scale known the world over. Just a thought.

Hi Abhay

I have a note on my computer that the name BHUPALI comes from sanskrit
syllable BHU meaning EARTH and PA meaning PROTECTOR or FATHER;
therefore BHUPALI is the KING or PROTECTOR of LAND
(short talk http://www.parrikar.org/)

I have the following vocal Bhopali/bhoop
Ajay Chakrabarty 54 minutes NR030
Ada Bhosle with Ali Akbar Khan 4 AMMP7216
Dilshad Khan 5 B6748
Ghulam Mustafa Khan 9 D4HV2918
Girija Devi 13 C4HV0065
Gundecha Brothers 30 CDNF150160
Balamurali Krishna with Hariprasad Chaurasia 65 Bhupali and Mohanam
NR041
Kishori Amonkar with Hariprasad Chaurasia 72 CDNF150183
Kishori Amonkar 35 PSLP5130 - 30 PSLP5724 - 21 PSLP5816
Laxmi Shankar 52 ACCD1052
Munawar Ali Khan 12 AC1003
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan 10 BHOPALI & YAMAN KALYAN NR017
Padma Talwalkar 17 A94026
Prabhakar Karekar 52 A97017
Salamat Ali Khan and sons 24 WLA18

In addition I have about 25 instrumental recordings of this raga. I am
not a musician. So, I don't know if there a difference between Bhopali
and Bhoop, but I have read that they are the same.

As mentioned above, Bhoop means king in Sanskrit. Bhupali means song
rendered in praise of the king. Normally it is sung for waking up the
king in a pleasing manner, rather than nagging him to "get up"

Bhupali is also sung for deities in the temples etc. Very famous
Marathi Bhupali-Ghanashyaam Sundara- from movie Amar Bhupali is
actually based on Raaga Bhupali, but other Bhupalis sung for the
deities don't need to be in Raaga Bhupali or Bhoop whichever way you
want to call it.

Bhoop or Bhupali are synonymes. There is no difference. Possibly
Bhoop is just a shortform of Bhupali. This is similar to Darabari
Kanada and Darbari. Both mean exactly same raaga.

Bhoop is normally sung in the evening. It is simple and not presented
in performances possibly because it is so simple. Compared to that
Shuddha Kalyan which has very similar structure, but has adornment of
tivra madhyam and Nishaadh in a very small amount, is more frequently
presented in concerts.

Bhoop or Bhupali is from Kalyan Thaat eventhough it does not have
essential marker of that thaat, tivra madhyam.

Kishori Amonkar's Bhoop is iconic. Sehela ri is very famous because
of Kishori. I believe this might be already availble on youtube.

Dear Kanti,

Thanks for your list. I had the pleasure of listening to Kishoritai &
Hariprasad Chaurasia performing this raag at Dadar Shivaji Park in the
mid 90-s. I guess, the 72 CDNF150183 must be the same recording.

For me, the very mention of Bhoop evokes memories of the fascinating
tarana by Zohrabai Agrawaali. We had the 78 rpm disc at home & as a
young boy, was fascinated to listen to her proclaimation of 'zohrabai
agrawaali!' immediately after the recording.

Another favourite bhoop of mine is a bengali chhota khayal by the
great Jnanendraprasad Goswami. 'nandkulchandra anandadulaal'. Once
again, a childhood memory of a Megaphone 78 rpm disc.

I guess, even if bhoop is still rendered in concerts, it's morning
cousin from the bilawal family, deshkar, is truly becoming obsolete,
these days. Maybe because of the lack of concerts held in the morning.
A fascinating raag. I fondly remember Yeshwantbuwa Joshi singing a
scintillating deshkar for half an hour at Dada Matunga Cultural Centre
in Bombay in the mid 90-s. Had me completely spellbound

The link below can help readers download a folder that has a few of my
digitalised bhoop-s & deshkar-s (78 rpms). Both the songs that I have
mentioned in my post, features in the folder. The folder also has a
marathi song each by the Mangeshi Divas (roughly based on bhoop).
While the elder sister's version is popular, the younger sister's
version is delightfully serene and puts to rest, any doubts about the
alleged lack of divinity in her voice.

Another excellent Bhoop is D.V.Paluskar's - "Jaba hee taba hee" - (I
think those are the words of the vilambit composition, anyway!) and
"Jaba se tumhi sana laagali, preet navelalia." (drut teentaal)

Dear Nandu-ji,

I think the wordings of the vilambit bandish is 'jab hi sab nirapat'.
A traditional Gwalior bandish. (I have even heard a recording of
Krishnarao S Pandit singing the same.)

And the drut bandish start with 'jab se tumi sang laagali....'.

I sure that the RMIM/C knowledgables can fill us up with the complete
text of the bandishes.

Wow! And from the words I had assumed that bandish must have come out
of of the Paluskarian "purification", as Janki Bakhale would call it.
The lyrics describe the scene of Seeta-swayamvar, where seeing that
all kings had given up (sab nirapat niraas bhaye) Rama seeks the
permission of his guru to try lifting the bow...

Also noteworthy is the Zohrabai Agrawali 78rpm. She is singing the
madhyalaya tarana I used to think was Kishori Amonkar's own.

To get back to the main issue. Panditji seems to've been making some
rather curious assertions lately. The other day I came across a CD of
his where he has sung a raga he calls Kalyan. In the liner notes he
claims he has presented the raga in its most ancient form. I endured
it for about ten minutes. And it was all there, strains of Yaman,
Yaman Kalyan (with the shuddha madhyam jutting out at odd places),
Shuddha Kalyan, even Bhupali, all thrown in impartially. I guess at
least some of those musical ideas corresponded to the ancient form,
maybe he was taking no chances.

Would someone have the complete recording of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali
Khan's Raag Bhoop/Boopali (vilambit - prabhu rang binaa, drut - maadev
maheshwaraa & tarana) for AIR's National Programe of Music,
accomapnied by his son Ustad Munnawar Ali Khan? Many years ago HMV/
Saregama released a truncated version (down to less than 30 minutes)
of the recording, this I have.

If so, I would very much appreciate if it could be made available to

Teental (Pratham Sur Sadhe) and Tarana Teental. Tabla sangat were

Did they really sing/play "Pratham Sur Saadhe" in Teental or is it
mislabelled? I have heard that bandish in Jhaptal.

Dear DG-ji,

Thank you for the elaboration on the bhoop bandish.

The madhyalaya tarana is an utterly fascinating type of rendering a
raag. Besides Zohrabai's bhoop-recording, I have heard two fascinating
78 rpm recordings of Kishoritai's mother in Bageshwari & Yaman. Both
are stunning, to say the least.

I also have a cassette of Ulhas Kashalkar rendering Malkauns. The term
used for this type of a rendition is 'khayal-numa'.

On the topic of Kishori-tai & Hariprasad-ji's jugal bandi in Bhoop, I
realise that I have made a mistake in assuming the date of the
recording (as Jan 1995 at Shivaji Park).

Kanti (Dattani) has sent me a scanned copy of the CD-jacket of the
recording that he has & Bhoop was not what they had performed in that
concert. They performed Lalat ('ghatan laagi raina') as they performed
just before the break of dawn.

In the same concert, Bhoop was played by M S Gopalakrishnan & Sultan
Khan (violin & sarangi, respectively). I was floored by the bowing
technique & the richness of the violin's tone of MSG. An absolute
master of the instrument.

(Kanti, this is a 'must have; album to add to your impressive Bhoop-
collection).

Regards-Archisman.

There is so much mislabeling going on now. Just saw CD cover of
Shobhatais Gazals. The title was Sahil se Khafaa hon mere pyare nahin
hoten. Though she she clearly sings Saiil se. One wonders if they
know the difference. BTW I heard one singer singing as Sahil se and
was corrected by one bozurg in the mehfil.

Hi Havanur

This is the reply I got from Nimbus in 2003

You are unfortunately correct. It should be JOGIYA. There is no Raga
JOYIGA

This is confirmed in the producers original recording notes, the
original booklet note delivered by the writer, and in the Raga Guide.

I am sorry but this is a spelling error.
