I enjoy Malini Rajurkar's LP in Raaga Kaush-ranjani very much. It seems
like the swaras are : SRgMdNS or Chandrakauns with shuddha Rishabh. Can
somebody give more information about the raaga. Who composed it, who
popularzed it? (Is it popular?) Who else presented it etc.
thanks in advance,
ek rasik
Raga KaishikiRanjani was conceived by Chidanand Nagarkar (student
of S.N. Ratanjankar) sometime in the 1960s (or perhaps
earlier). We have discussed the rAga several times here in
the past and so briefly:
It is a janya of the Keervani melakartA and is similar
to Chandrakauns in ascent (that is, with rishab and
pancham varjya). It is the avarohAtmak vakra
use of the shuddha rishab that distinguishes K-Ranjani from
Chandrakauns (which, btw, employs the shuddha rishab occasionally
and sparingly, especially in the tAr saptak). The pancham
is varjya throughout.
The definitive tonal sentence may be given as (M=shuddha):
N S", d N d M, M g R, R g M g R S
The right punctuation on the rishab imbues the rAga with
an exceedingly pleasant space for repose. The original
compositions of Nagarkar were the vilambit 'Eri mAyi piyA' and
the druta 'barkhA ritu.' The rAga has become very popular now.
Prabhakar Karekar has a recording in which he sings C.R. Vyas'
rather beautiful druta composition 'E mitavA kit jAya rahi.'
Warm regards,

It was taught to me as Uttar-ang Pradhan, which also
differenciates it from Chandra Kauns.
BTW tonight 11/13, he sang in Fremont Hindu Temple and he was truly
wonderful. He sang for over 3 hours to the everyone's hearts content w/o
any complaints. His Bada Khayal in Bhupali was a rare treat, one hardly
hears Bhupali or Bhopali in concerts although as Pt. Kareker said in
introducing the Raaga that Bhopali is the first Raaga taught to all
students. Basant Bahar deserves a kudos for organizing the concert.
