There was a request for the lyrics of `bhAvayAmi..' a couple of weeks back.
Here is what I have. It's from my memory. If somebody has any corrections
please post..
I remember reading in a book by a swAtit tirunAL researcher (who was a big
fan of his, and tried to disprove most of the Balachander theories, forgot
his name), that only the sAvEri part was swAti tirunAL's and that the rest
was written by Semmangudi (apparently so was the case with the ever-so-
beautiful `bhOgIndraSAyinam' in kuntaLavarALi). Has anyone heard of this ?

I find that there were a few silly mistakes in the `bhAvayAmi' lyrics
that I posted a couple of days back. I had a request from someone to
provide some meanings. Made me look through the whole stuff more
critically. I find that there are some lines that I don't understand.
Anyone has some authoritative answers ? May be a full line-by-line
translation ? It seems to be a great piece for that..

Should be `ghaTajadattAnupamita'. `ghaTam' means `pot'. `ghaTaja(n)'
is `one who was born in a pot'. Isn't that agstya, the sage ?

should be `kharAdiharam'. `khara(n)' was one of the three rAkshasas,
`kharAdi' referring to `khara(n) and others'.

Again, `anagha' is the correct one. I do have a doubt whether it is
`tIrasangatAnjanEya..'. `sangatam' would mean `on meeting'.

A couple of people pointed out to me that this could be `jvalanapUta'.
I still think it is `jvalanabhUta', meaning `born from flames'.
Of course sIta was born from the earth, but was `born again' from
the flames at agnipravESam. I remember a story about the real sIta
being kept away by agnidEva, on rAma's request (as he knew about the
future), and the sIta that rAvana stole away being a `mAyAsIta'. Thus
sIta was effectively `born again' from the flames. Am I correct in
this ? In any case, I don't know what `pUta' would mean in Sanskrit.

This is indeed a charming composition! I'll attempt here a partial
translation and perhaps a word-by-word translation later when I locate my
copy of V.S. Apte's Sanskrit Dictionary :-(.
bhaavuka vitaraNa para apaanga leelaa lasitam
giver of happiness, the superior one,
(him, who) playfully casts a side glance with grace
(I think of..)
bhaavayaami raghuraamam...
I think of, raghuraama (raama of the raghu clan)
bhaavuka = happiness, vitaraNa = gift, para = superior,
apaanga = side glance, leelaa = play, lasitam = grace, shine, frolic
(The accusative singular nouns, raamam, praanesham, etc. are all
connected with the verb bhaavayaami ("I think of") )
The stanzas are quite obviously organized in the same order as the
chapters of the RaamaayaNa, viz., baalakaanDa, ayodhyaakaanDa, etc.
so I have relied on the events there to glean the meaning off these
words!

Meaning:-
I think of/worship the Rama of Raghu-lineage,
who
is the seat (garden) of good qualities.

The word "para" is not used in the sense of "superior". The
correct interpretation is "vitaraNapara" meaning "interested in/involved

That is exactly right. Each charaNam stanzas is a replacement for
", who is the seat...." in the pallavi.

Tilkam is the pottu/bindi that adorns the forehead, used here in
the sense of "the best of". subAhumukha the demon attacked Vishwamitra's

means doing. Here "savana avanarachita" means "while protecting the
rituals".

My comments on the book:
The book gives the text of the kritis in SamskrUtam (DEvanAgari),
MalayALam, and Tamizh. Meaning in prose form are given in MalayALam and
Tamizh. Music in notated in a combination of MalayALam and Tamizh, with
the notes written in Tamizh. There are 3 parts to the publication, I
currently posses only the first two. Definitely worthwhile to have if
the combination of languages makes sense to you!
