Thiruppampuram Brothers, nadhaswarams, are recognized as one of the very
best nadhaswaram ensembles today. The brothers, T.K.S. Swaminathan and
T.K.S. Meenakshisundaram, began to play at the early ages of six and
seven, under the guidance of the uncle T.S.K. Sivasubramania Pillai and
father T.S.K. Shanmugasundaram Pillai. They come from a long lineage of
innovative and highly regarded nadhaswaram performers. Their ancestors
five generations back introduced the ensemble of two nadhaswarams
performing together as equals (rather than as leader and follower),
known as "Irattai Nadhaswaram" and continued by the brothers today.

The brothers have been honored with many awards and titles. In 1981, the
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu state, M.G. Ramachandran, named them
Tamilnadu Arasavai Kalaignargal (State Artists). In 1998, the state
government again honored them with the title Kalaimamani, the highest
award for artists. They have received Gold Medals from the Allepey
Dewasworom Board, Kerala, and the Sri Ganapathi Sachidananda Swamigal,
Mysore. During his training, Swaminathan was presented with the title
Best Trainee and a treasured nadhaswaram by the Jagadguru of Kanchi
Kamakoti Peetam.

Their many performances include several for the Sankaracharya of Kanchi
Kamakoti Peetam, one the most highly revered religious leaders of India.
They have performed at the Sangit Natak Akademy, New Delhi, the Madras
Music Academy, the Tamil Isai Sangam, and at venues and sabhas
throughout the country. Many temples and religious organizations have
hosted their performances and honored them as well. The brothers are
performing artists for All India Radio and Doordarshan television. They
have also been invited to perform abroad in several nations.

T.D. Sivagurunathan, tavil, is one of the top players of this drum
today. He began to learn the tavil drum at the age of nine under the
guidance of Keelavoor Kunjusingavavel Pillai. He later had advanced
training under the tutelage of Tanjai T.R. Govindarajan at Tiruvarur
Music College. His first public performance was at the age of fourteen.
He has accompanied many senior nadhaswaram artists, including
Namagiriperrai Krishnan, Madurai M.P.N. Sethuraman, Chinna Moulana, and
the Tiruppampuram Brothers. He has also performed with the clarinet
vidwan A.K.C. Natarajan, saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath, the violin duo of
Ganesh and Kumaresh, and others. He has also performed with many other
masters of the tavil, such as Velankaiman Shanmukha Sundaram Pillai,
Tirucherai Muthukumaraswamy Pillai, and Haridwaramangalam A.K.
Palanivel. He has been in well over 1000 concerts all over India and
abroad in his career.

Sivagurunathan has been honored with several titles, including
Kalaimamani, the highest award given to musicians by the state
government of Tamil Nadu, conferred upon him in 1999. The Tamil Isai
Mandram of Tiruvaiyaru named him Isaimamurusu, and the Sri Sastha
Samooham of Calcuttta named him Tavil Peroli Selvam, among several other
honors. Since 1997, he has been Tavil Teacher for the Tiruchirappalli
District Government Music School. He has also performed on All India
Radio.
