USTAD FATEH ALI KHAN OF PAKISTAN IS THE SENIORMOST CURRENT REPRESENTATIVE
OF PATIALA GHARANA IF ONE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THE BLOODLINE , LINEAGE ,
TALEEM,& GAYAKI . WHILE THE YOUNGER REPRESENTATIVES REZA ALI KHAN OF
CALCUTTA, MAZHAR AND JAWAD ALI KHAN OF DELHI MAY ALSO HAVE VALID CLAIM ,
BASED ON THE ABOVE CRITERIA IMHO.

I couldn't find the original posting which these responses address, but I
presume it was some ignorant fellow claiming or believing Ojoy to be
khalifa of the Patiala gharana. I heartily concur with Eric and Mr. Aeri.
Ojoy studied a bit from Munawar Ali Khan and wasn't even the recipient of
aam talim, never mind khas talim. He was appointed to khalifadom by the
khalifa of khalifas V. Kitchlu. Sorry, doesn't count. Now if you want to
make him khalifa of the harmnioum gharana, he gets my vote.

Actually, the original poster asked a one-liner "who is the khalifa of
the Patiala Gharana ?".

Here are a few other questions :

(1) How do you define the term "khalifa" for a gharana ? Is it based on
bloodline, lineage, training, accuracy of the style or on the basis of
being the most "popular" musician of the gharana ?

(2) What is aam talim and what is khas taalim ?

(3) Is there any CD/Cassettes available featuring Fateh Ali Khan, Mazhar
or Jawhad Ali Khan ? How are they related to Bade Ghulam Ali Khan ?

(4) I always thought V Kichlu was some kind of industrialist until I saw
a CD release featuring him. Which gharana does he represent ? I believe
he is a key person of Sangeet Research Academy in Calcutta. Am I right ?

I first heard Ajoy Chakroborty in 1980-81 time frame. He, if I remember
correctly, was still training from Gyan Prakash Ghosh. At that time he
was considered an upcoming musician and received some kind of grant from
SRA and he started his training from Munwar Ali Khan. Now lets say if he
had not taken the taalim from Munwar Ali Khan, which gharana would he
have represented in that case ?

I was also thinking about Pt G P Ghosh´s gharana and looked it up :
Swarganga lists him under Farrukhabad Tabla gharana . Then in his disciple tree he has 2 vocalists also , who then again are listed under traditional vocal gharanas .
