The scale of rAga sAvethrE is:
s g3 m1 p n2 S
S n2 p m1 g3 s
Controversy about the varja notes aside, this rAga is considered
the janya of maeLa rAga hare kAmBojE.
I do not know if there is a hendhusthAne rAga of the same name.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
:Savitri seemed close to Jog.
:
This is simply an illusion created by the use of gamakas on the
gAnDhAra note. For this very reason, reShaBa varja rAgas like
bahudhAre, valaje (or kalAvathe), thelang, mahathe -- all of the
hare kAmBojE family; and gamBEra nAtti (which is also reShaBa
varja) sound as if they do have a ShaT-Sruthe reShaBa in their
sancAras.
In fact, even jog does not use the reShaBa note in its scale.
However, some very characteristic phrases like ``gmpm, gmgs''
create the illusion of a ShaT-Sruthe note.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
:This brings up my next Q. What is the Carnatic equivalent of raga Jog ?
:
To a very good degree of approximation, jog can be considered
equivalent to nAtti -- if only because there are so many prayogas
for nAtti that are applicable to jog.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
:Is it derived from Chalanattai since both have Ga(b) and Ga. Nattai however
:sounds very different from Jog.
:
Those places where nAtti uses the ShaT-Sruthe reShaBa note as
such and those versions of nAtti using the ShaT-Sruthe Dhivatha
will sound different, any other differences are simply due to
stylistic differences between a karNAtaka rAga and a hendhusthAne
rAga.
BTW, there is no equivalent of cala-nAtti in the 10-ThAt system
of BathKandae. jog can be considered, more or less ad-hoc, as the
janya of KamAj.

I would think that Nattai is pretty close to Jog if it isn't exactly the
same. There is an interesting jugalbandhi recording of L. Subramaniam and
Ali Akbar Khan on Jog/Nattai. While the recording lacks actual musical
value (strictly my humble opinion) it serves as a good basis to illustrate
the common features of Hindustani Jog and Carnatic Nattai.
Arijit.
L.Sankar played the same raga in IIT(M) Mardigras `89 and also a tala
called Kamakshi. It seems both are his creations.I forget who Savithri is,but
Kamakshi is his mother. Can any person give the charecters of that tala?

All the Harikaambhoeji Janya ragas together with their MaeLa have their
Anthara Gaandhaara Gamaka in the upper region.I have never heard any of them
sounding the lower note. It's the characteristic of the MaeLa itself. This is
the reason why Mohanam is still considered a Janyam of HariKaambhoeji in spite
of several arguments against it.
The raga `Kalaavathi'is known even during the time of St.Thyagaraja, more
like `Hindhusthani'raga whereas Valaj is the creation of Dr.Harikaesanallore
Muthiah Bhagavathar, doesn't have even a trace of Shatsruthi Rishabha. It's
Gamakas are close to Malayamaarutham/Chakravaaham.
