Wanted some information regarding the following ragas:
Bhairavam: I just heard a very attractively rendered piece by
DKP "Mariyadagadayya" which started this whole train of thought. Unable
to differentiate this from Suryakantham.. Does anybody have any other
recordings of this raga? Krithis or preferably alapanas? Seems like a
pretty rich raga deserving of more detailed treatment than usually
meted out..
Suryakantham: Have only a vague understanding of this raga.. Differs
from Chakravaham by using N2 instead of N1? Have heard a Tyagaraja
kriti Muddu Momu(?) but no alapanas.. Any alapana recordings?
Saurashtram: Differs from the above ragas by using vakra prayogas like
PMD etc. also uses both N1 and N2 phrases.
Thanks in advance for education/comments..

if i remember correctly, saurashtram is a janya of chakravaakam which
uses n2 (kaishiki). suryakantham is a melakarta ragam, which uses n3
(kaakali). balamurali's album of songs composed by "bhadrachala
ramadas" also has one in suryakantham - "thakkuvemi manaku" (since i am
not a telugu speaker, don't know rest of the words) - though it's
short.

Saurashtram I think uses both Ni's (sparing usage of Kaishiki and
liberal usage of Kakali..)
I have been told that Bhairavam avoids the Ni in ascent and differs
from Suryakantham in this aspect. However the recording of
Mariyadagadayya by DKP I have uses the Ni in ascent fairly liberally
especially in the charanam.. Any thoughts..?
Thanks for the tip on the Balamurali Suryakantham - I think I have that
somewhere - I will attempt to dig it out..
The prayOgas in takkuvEmi manaku ( use of both N, repeating
p m d n s.. etc )look more like Sourashtra than Suryakantha.
The only recording of this composition I have heard (BMK)does
not list the rAga of the composition.
When we are talking about Sourashtra, one recoding of Sri
ganapatini by BMK comes to my mind, where in the kalpanA
svaras kAkali N is totally avoided.

Dikshitar's magnum opus 'Sri Vishwanatham Bhajeham' has the raagam
Bhairavam in it.
Bhairavam is a janyam of the raagam Chakravaaham, if my memory serves
me right.
I have not heard bhairavam anywhere else.
Of course, Sooryakantam is Melakarta number 17. The diff. between this
& Chakravaaham is the occurance of N3 in Sooryakantam(not N2 as
mentioned here). Chakravaham has N2.
You cannot have D2 & N1 occuring in the same raagam.
Saurashtram is a Bhaashanga raagam. I am not sure if it derives from 16
or 17.
N3 occurs in prayogams like 'S N D P M' , 'D N S R'
N2 occurs in prayogams like 'D N D P M' , 'P D N D P'
Thanks

is this how it is? one "saurashtram" which i know of in which i
struggle to find traces of the kaakali ni is the ustava sampradaya
kriti "meluko dayaanidhi, meluko daasharathi". but i suppose that could
be somewhat composition-specific?

In addition to "mariyadagadayya", there is "nannu brova rara rama" muttiah
bhagavathar; there is a recording of this composition by GNB in the concert
in which he sings RTP in natakurunji ; the concert is fantastic and so is
this piece.

Balamurali's 'Karuninchara Karivarada' is an excellent composition in
Suryakantham. It's a part of his Raaganga Ravali Series.

I remember there was a Sangeetha cassette that had an elaborate
Suryakantham - "Muddu Momu" piece rendered by Balamurali. It's a long
time since I heard it but I believe it was with an alapana.

Nannubrova Raada is a composition of Patnam Subrahmanya Iyer set to
Roopaka Taala.
Does anybody have a listing of PSI's compositions. A lot of them are in
rare(r) ragas like Narayani, Bhairavam, Naagaswaraavali etc.
Thanks
