There has been a lot of debate on the relevance of
Bhakthi to KM. One way of finding out about this is
to get the opinion of people on what they consider the
best rendered krithis. This will, in a limited way, give
us an insight if people like the raga bhava of the
rendition or if they like the Bhakthi/poetry part of
it. I will give below my list of ten best krithis rendered
on tape/CD. I am not include any material not available
on commercial tape or CD. I have given my comments on these
renditions. I have taken into account only the rendition
of the krithis and not the alapana preceding it or the
kalpana swaras. Wherever possible I have given the label
of the company which released the tape/CD. The order is
random.
1. Heccharikaga Raara - Tyagaraja - Yadhukula Kamboji
Balamuralikrishna - Utsava Sampradaya Krithis - Sangeetha
In an article publised in "The Hindu" sometime back, the
author wrote that though this song was sung by starlwarts
like Ariyakudi, they could only get the raga bhava out.
Balamurali on the other hand effortlessly recreates the
scene described by Tyagaraja. This is very true. An excellent
rendition.
2. Thiruvadi Charanam - Gopalakrishna Bharathi- Kamboji
Musiri Subramania Iyer - HMV
Musiri was one of the early artist to give importance to
the Bhakthi bhava in the songs. This provides ample testimony.
3. Giripai - Tyagaraja - Sahana
M.D.Ramanathan - HMV
All the essential ingredigents of MDR's singing are present here.
4. Kanakasaila Viharini -Syama Sastry - Punnaga Varali
M.S.Subbulakshmi - Second side of Kamakshi Suprabatham - HMV
The very first line creates a mood of bakthi.
5. Chintayamam - Muthuswamy Dikshitar - Bhairavi
D.K.Pattammal - BRI records (Swara Bhushani - Title of the tape)
Very simple rendition. It has a powerful impact. Clear enunciation
of words.
6. Nannu Vidachi - Tyagaraja - Rithi Gowlai
D.K.Jayaraman - AMV
The bhakthi bhavam in this song comes out very well in this rendition
by DKJ.
7. Devi Brova - Syama Sastry - Chitamani
K.V.Narayanaswamy - HMV
The leisurely pace and clarity of words make this a delight.
8. Jamboopathe - Muthuswamy Dikshitar - Yamuna Kalyani
B.Rajam Iyer - BRI records (Swara Bhushani)
The trademarks of Dikshitar are present in abundance. The slow development
of Yamuna Kalyani is something to die for. Rajam Iyers voice may not be
very appealing but he renders this krithi very well.
9. Suki Evvaro - Tyagaraja - Kaanada
T.N.Seshagopalan - Rama Nama Prabhavam - AVM
This is a song which TNS is in no hurry to finish. In fact the first tape
of this double album contains eexcellent renditions.
10. Sri Venkata Gireesam - Muthuswamy Dikshithar - Suruti
Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer - AVM Double Album
Cant expect too much of bhakthi bhava in Semmangudi's rendition. I like
this more for the robust rendition.
This has been a very difficult list to prepare since there are many
excellent renditions by many of the artist mentioned above. I restricted
myself to one krithi per artist. This is purely arbitrary.
I invite others to contribute their own list.
Thanks.

1. Thathvamariya- Reethigowla
2. Nijamarmamulanu- Umabharanam
3. O Jagadamba- Ananda Bhairavi
4. Vijayambike- Vijayanagari

6.Thaye yesoda- Thodi
7. Vasudevayani- Kalyani
8. Thookia Thiruvadi- Sankarabharanam
9. Eppovaruvaro- Jonepuri
10. English Note: - ?

would,nt be a pilgrimage to heaven? Thanks.
Rama krishnan.

Excellent idea. Too bad I do not have the cassette label names. And few
of them are live (You had to be there!).
1. TNS rendering Marivere, Shanmukhapriya. Electrical swara prastharam. The
same casette features Sriranganatham(?), Bridavana Saranga which is also
excellent.
2. KVN singing Jagadhodharana - On tape. EMI? Bhava laden.
3. Maharajapuram Santhanam singing O Rangasayee - On tape. Its party time.
4. Sanjay Subramaniam singing from Nandanar Charithram live. AVM Rajeshwari
hall in Jan 98. I blinked several times since i was seeing Nandanar with
Sanjay's face.
5. Semmangudi's live recording of Kanakana ruchira (mailed to me by
an RMIC contact - May he live long and prosperous). I made the mistake of
listening to this on a walkman at work, and people flocked to watch me.
6. TNS singing Bharathi's Muruga Muruga - ragamalika. On tape. Has only
Bharathiyar's compositions. Just great, how he glides through the ragas
allocating 3/4 syllables for each, effortlessly.
7. Bombay Jayashree sang O Rangasayee in Los Angeles.
8. Unnikrishnan singing Bharathiyar's Suttum Vizhi (live in la). I have heard
another version on tape with background orchestra which is not half as good.
9. Unnikrishnan singing RTP in Sahana (live in la). Simply great. Terrific
ragamalika swarams.
10. Sudha Raghunathan rendering Kharaharapriya (live in la). Elaborate and
covers all bases. Haven't listened to it in a while.

This is from Sangeetha. The song in Brindavana Saranga is "SoundaraRajam". I
like this song more than Marivere, which is also very good. In fact the second
side contains two gems, "KsheeraSagara Sayana - Devagandhari" and " Rambhadra
Raara - Anandha Bhairavi". A very good tape to buy.

I think this is now released by HMV. This tape has Devi Brova and another KVN
all time favourite, "Ennerramum - Devagandhari"
Humbly,
Venkat.
