This is what I know about Periyasamy Thooran: -

He was associated with Ramakrishna Mutt, Madras. I think he was working for
RKM, but I am not too sure. He is a disciple of Shri. N. Sivaramakrishna
Iyer. He stayed with him & learnt music from him for well over 10 years.

He is an ardent devotee of the Lord Murugan. So most of his compositions are
on Murugan though he has composed on other Gods & Goddesses too. He has
composed well over 200 kritis. He has composed not only in popular ragas
but also not so popular ones like Vandanadharini, Desiya Ranjani, Vilasini,
Boga Vasantham to name a few.

I think all his kritis are in Tamil. In late 60s or early 70s, with the help
of ‘Tamil Nadu Sangeetha Nataka Sangam’ and ‘Tamil Isai Sangam’ he published
his compositions and it’s titled ‘Isai Mani Manjari’. I don’t know any more
details about that, as I was too young then! Perhaps you can check in places
like Karnatic Music Book Centre, Sripuram, Royapettah, Madras.

I have heard Shri. T V Sankaranarayanan singing his compositions more than
any other artists. I think he released a cassette too few years ago.

Some of the other popular kritis of Thooran that I have heard are: -

Pazham Nee – Bhairavi, Kala Kalan – Atana, Muruga Muruga Endral – Saveri,
Endha Varam Arula – Hamsanandhi, Unaiandri Veruoru – Saraswathi, Appa Unai
Maravanae – Bilahari, Thillana – Udhya Ravichandrika, Enna Punniyam
Saidhaeno – Desiya Ranjani, Kannan Kuzhalosai – Sindhu Bhairavi, Kandaen
Kanavinilae - Senchurutti

Ashlesh,
Mr. Periyasami Thooran, started his career as a school teacher, and then
was in
charge of Tamil Lexican Madras University,
after Dr.S. Vaiyapuri Pillai. He had many compositions and he was a great
lover of
Carnatic music. I had a good fortune of
working with him for a few years in translating
some important key words from English to
Tamil in Commerce. A very fine gentleman
and a nice person to work with and right from
GNB many musicians have sung his compositions. If I remember correctly, his
family had published a book of his compositions.

Several more are available on tape - on the Sangeetha label check out a beautiful album of
his songs by Bombay Sisters several years ago (never heard anyone else sing these songs
before or since). There's a song in the recent Old Gems of N.C. Vasanthakokilam album
released by RPG.

I am giving below the link containing the list of songs penned by Shri Thooran. Since he was not musically trained, he took the help of Mavelikara Sivaramakrishna Iyer, a Music teacher in the Ramakrishna Vidyalaya. Later his songs were set to tune by Shri KVN, Shri TVS and others.

The list is incomplete, showing only 212 songs. I have 315 of his songs in my database. If there is interest, I can generate the list and post it here.
