D.K.Datar has a very sweet tone. There are some artifacts in his playing
but the overall style is very lyrical.

N.Rajam is technically superb. She has successfully created an echo of
her guru's (vocal) music in her instrument. Her daughter Sangeeta is also
good (though I haven't heard much of her independent music).

M.S.Gopalakrishnan also brings technical excellence to the stage. His
(baDaa) khayal development, however, seems a bit incomplete (to me).
His daughter Narmada accompanies him competently.

Don't know much about Kala Ramnath. Presumably she has good
technique (since she learned with her aunt N.Rajam).

> of the past ?

Shridhar Parsekar was a superb violinist and musician by all accounts.

Gajananbua Joshi had super ideas but his playing was somewhat
constrained. I prefer his singing.

I am not a big fan of V.G.Jog's playing or music.

Who accompanies Krishnarao Shankar Pandit on some (AIR?)
recordings? His sangat is pretty good.

Milind Raikar, who accompanies Kishori Amonkar on a regular
basis has a very clean sound and follows the music well. He seems
to be very promising. Haven't heard any of his solo performances.
Who is/are his guru/s?

Sorry for self-followup. A google search revealed

http://www.sudeepaudio.com/profiles.php?aid=53

After a lot of other (incl. western) training he is currently learning
from D.K.Datar.

Truth.

I have known reasonably talented Hindustani violinists
to have stopped playing violin or tried taking Carnatic
lessons or switched tuning to S"-P-S-"P from "PSPS"
as a small tribute after being bewitched by MSG's violin.
And it isn't just MSG. Tamilians have a special feel for
the instrument.

According to Neville Cardus and Thomas Beecham, the
same is true in case of Jewish violinists in WCM. Cardus
had presented his list of 5 best violinists. Four of them IIRC
were Russian-born Jews and the fifth, Yehudi Menuhin,
had for his parents two Russian-born Jews.

IMO it is true. Datar & Jog may be best north indian violnists, but
they are certainly not in league of N Rajam & MSG. South Indian
musicians have really mastered the instrument. I still remember a
stunning hindolam by Lalgudi Jayaraman in my college Spic-Macay concert
about 15 years ago.

Perhaps true - but only because violin came into Carnatic music much earlier
than in Hindusthani. There would be hundreds of violin concert performers in
Carnatic music today - as against a handful in HCM. It takes time, 50-100
years and three generations or more - for any instrument to produce top
class performers.

Take it from a jew of russian descent... ;-)

I have had the honor of seeing TN Krishnan and N Rajam in 2003 and it
was an wonderful performance.

On a note for a younger performer to watch Akkarai Subhalakshmi is
absolutely incredible.

Other names I'd like to add to the list of prominent violinists:

1. Pt. Ratnakar Gokhale (the foremost disciple of Pt. D. K. Datar), and
2. Pt. Ramakant Paranjape

I have heard a pair of good violinists from Dharwad - Vireshwara Madari
and Ishwar Morageri. They played together and IIRC had graduated from
the Panchakshari Gawaai school in Gadag. Does anyone know more?
