Many thanks for this, KristenPop.

This is the first time I heard Balsara on the piano, and I confess my
reactions are mixed. On the one hand, the maestro's virtuosity is
manifest. However, it also highlights the limitations of the
instrument in sustaining any meaningful Raga expansion. Its inability
to produce meends is well known. This track showcases another
shortcoming, viz. intonation. Equal tuning just does not work here,
particularly with a Raga like Madhuvanti where many swaras are
designed to vary microtonally from pitches dictated by standard tuning
models. This creates a feeling of 'besurapan', which only intensifies
as the track progresses. I'd rate the piano as less ICM-tolerant than
the santoor even, where one can at least tune individual strings
before a rendition to approximate appropriate shrutis. I use
'approximate' advisedly here. Shrutis are characteristically
derivative of the way a note is intoned (swar-lagaav), in which
respect the santoor is similarly um, constricted.
