After a gap of almost 3 years we are delighted to have Rajan P.
Parrikar back at SAWF for another round of articles on the ragas of
Indian classical music. In this edition Rajan takes us on a melodious
journey into the heart of ragas Narayani and Gorakh Kalyan. The
commentary is accompanied by music clips of the masters of this music.

As always, a wealth of information in this (and similar) link/s.

Mr. Parrikar may also want to refer to a bengali film song 'dokhina
bataashe mon keno kaande' by Sabita Chowdhury from the movie 'kinu
gowalaar goli'. Music by Salil Chowdhury and, as usual, the framework
of the 'pakad' gives way to Salil-ish twists & turns in the antara.

Regards-Archisman.

Its worth while dwelling into the similarities and the differences
between saraswati (carnatic) and narayani (carnatic). They differ only
in the madhyama.

Saraswati and Saraswatipriya

L Subramanium has played Saraswatipriya in his two CDs WLA24 (43
minutes) & NI5323 (25 minutes). What is the difference between these
two ragas?

Saraswati and Hemavati

In one of the CDs it is stated that Saraswati is 'connected' to
Hemavati. Any observations?

Thanks,

Kanti Dattani

saraswati is sa ri(chaturasriti) ma(prati) pa dha(chaturasriti) sa, sa
ni(kaishiki) dha pa ma ri sa. (As I said, Narayani and Saraswati differ
on in the madhyama). ("anuraagamule" of thyagaraja is a "self defining
standard")

Hemavati is a melakarta raga (easily remembered as the pratimadhyama
raga of kharaharapriya) - sa ri(chaturasriti) ga(sadharana) ma(prati)
pa dha(chaturasriti) ni(kaishiki) sa. (find and hear "shri kanthimatIm"
of muttuswami dikshitar)

This is awesome news! I applaud Rajan's willingness in sharing his
wealth of knowledge and collections with every one. Welcome back Rajan,
we missed you. In a world full of people selling CDs and tutions, and
elaborating gharnas, you are one of a kind. You are like the Bhatkhande
of current times. Will look forward to your postings in sawf, and if
possible please tell a thing or two about Tabla taals too.

Thanks Rajan. Can any body help with the following two queries 1. The
MLV clip cuts of around the 14 minute 25 seconds mark. Is that
intended? 2. Is there any way to capture the file and listen to it off
line. In a different thread there was a suggestion of total recorder. I
recollect that the earlier offerings from Rajan could be captured as
.rm file and listened to at liesure. Has this been discontinued. Thanks

Nat Narayan by Pt Jasraj ( sampurn Khamaj th )

He often uses RmPD which reminds me of Gorakh Kalyan . I don´t hear SR RG Gm P , the Nat sangati which is included in swargang´s pakad . They also use dvi-Ni .... I speculate that they want to pass it off as a Nat prakar : Maybe it is , but I don´t get it .
Alternate name at Ocean : BrihanNata .

Nat Narayani by Salamat - Sharafat ( rhythmic tarana at the end ) . He says that ma is the vadi .
That would be Ocean´s NataNarayani ( type 2 - shadav ) . However Gadre says that it is similar to Madhmad Sarang ...

Drut : RS´nSRm , nDmDP .
Tarana : nD PmDP (m)R R S S ´nS
To me it sounds closer to Gorakh Kl than to Narayani . The first phrase gives me an abhas of Gavati / Megh though .
For that matter Ocean lists 10 more scale-congruent ragas like Hindol Sarang , Samant Malhar ....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfkB5iVF9-8

Btw , at Ocean NataNarayani ( type 1 ) is described as being similar to Jhinjhoti and Narayani . He says that Nata Narayan / BrihanNata is just another name for it . Fittingly , he uses the above mentioned audio by Pt Jasraj .
