Special features: Tristhayi ragam, Sarva kalikamm
Dirgha Kampita Ga ; Ga Ma Ni are Jiva swarams,
Avokes Karuna Rasam.

The Subbaraya Sastry composition `` Janani Ninuvina''
simply immortalizes this Ragam. A rare old recording
of M. D. Ramanathan has the Tyagaraja Krithi ``Paripalaya
Paripalaya'' in this Ragam.

Muthuswami Dikshitar uses the addresses the Goddess
in the Ragamudra phrase ``Riti Gowrave'' in his
Nilothpalamba Krithi in Nariritigowla.

(There are several ragas with the suffix ``Gowla'':
but no relationship to Ritigowla --
Gowla, Mayamalavagowla, Kannadagowla, Purva Gowla,
Chaya Gowla, Narayanagowla, and Kedaragowla)
The Nilothpalamba Gowlantha Krithis of Dikshitar
(all eight compositions on Goddess Nilothpalamba,
in eighr ragams with Gowla suffix, has one song
in (Nari)Ritigowla).

One more kriti in rItigauLa that comes to my mind is ninnu vina mari
galada by SyAmA SAstri. Most people sing this in rItigauLa.
The only exception that I have heard belong to the Mudicondan
Venkatramier school - vEdavalli, et al. They sing it in AbhEri (the
traditional, shuddha dhaivata one, i.e.).

A lovely padam (or is it considered a jAvaLi??) in this rAgA starts
with the word nyAyamu. The late rAmnAd krishNan used to sing it
wonderfully. These days it features (not surprisingly??;-) in the
concerts of the Hyderabad brothers. Does anyone know who the composer
is?

Regards,
Ramana

Here are some observations on rItigauLa, renditions
of the same that I have heard...

>Muthuswami Dikshitar uses the addresses the Goddess

>Nilothpalamba Krithi in Nariritigowla.

The anupallavi runs thus

dInajanArti prabhanjanArItigaurave
^^^^^^^^^^^^^
dEs'ika pradarcita cidrUpiNI natabhairave
^^^^^^^^^^^^
AnandAtmAnubhave adrirAjasamudbhave
sUnas'arAri vaibhave jnAnasudhArNave s'ive

(s'rI nIlOtpalanAyike...)

Dikshitar gives the rAgamudra in the first line clearly,
as per the kanakAmbarI-ratnAmbarI nomenclature for the
20th mELa rAga. But I wonder if he is also hinting at
its sampUrNa mELa name in the next line itself...

[There may be another such instance in his kritis...
although the 58th mELa was called des'i simhAravam
in the kanakAmbarI-ratnAmbarI nomenclature, there is
a kriti of his in this rAga which begins as
hariyuvati haimavati ...
Incidentally, this mELa is the only one that Venkatamakhi
claims as his own creation. Otherwise, he rests content
just listing 18 other mELas, and their ordinal number in
his 72 mELa scheme.]

>Vanajaksha (Ata) - Vina Kuppayyar

TNS renders this from time to time in concert.

>Raga rathna (Rupakam) - Tyagaraja
>Dvaithamu Sukhama (Adi) - Tyagaraja

These are quite popular compositions... GNB seems to
have sung a lot of Ritigaula, giving somewhat of a
skip to Anandabhairavi... although he is supposed to
have sung a RTP in the latter.

>Badalikadira (Adi) - Tyagaraja

GNB, MDR, and Balakrishna Sastrigal (harikathA)
have rendered this... the last one's rendition had
necessarily a dramatic element to it... very impressive...

>Cherarava (Adi)- Tyagaraja

Apparently, this used to be quite a popular composition...
Alathur Brothers have rendered this on a pre-rec cassette...

>Bale Balendu (Adi) - Tyagaraja

I have only heard S.Ramanathan sing this.

>Nannu Vidachi (Chapu) - Tyagaraja

DKJ's rendition used to be masterly... when he sang
abdhilO munigi s'vAsamu baTTi
ANi mutyAla gannaTlAyE ramaNa
he sang with such punch and feeling that his own
s'vAsa/prANa could be felt, as it were... overwhelming !

Voleti also used to sing it beautifully... Santhanam
used to render it well but would sugarcoat it often to
the point of cloying.

>Badali Kadira (Adi) - Tyagaraja

This is the same composition as "Badalikadira" above.
baDalika dhIra is how it splits...

>Sadguru Swamiki (Adi) - Tyagaraja

I think this is a mistake... the kriti by this pallavi
is that of Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar... we discussed
this on rmic a while ago...

>Paripalaya paripalaya (Rupakam) - Tyagaraja

Only MDR had the patience/attitude to sing such kIrtanas
without tiring... but even he has rendered only 6 of the
12 caraNas, probably due to constraints of EP/LP time...
a brilliant kIrtana in which Tyagaraja describes his daily
worship, internalizing the outward ritual.

>Sree Nilothpala Nayike (Rupakam) - Muthuswami Dikshitar

Balamurali has rendered this evocatively, in mainstream
RitigauLa, on a Sangeetha cassette...

In the Dikshitar tradition, it is played exclusively with
D1.

>Janani Ninuvina (Rupakam) - Subbaraya Sastri

Although many have rendered this, MDR's rendition was
a classic... while others would mechanically run thru
the ciTTa svara sAhitya of this and other Syama Sastri/
SubbarAya Sastri kritis, he would relish and dwell on it
in his own deeply experiential way.

>Sadguru Swamiki (Adi) - Ramnad Srinivasa Iyengar

Balamurali has rendered this well on a Sangeetha
cassette. KVN has rendered this too... and apparently
does this normally on his guru's anniversary...

>Paripalaya Mam (Rupakam) - Swathi Tirunal

GNB's rendition is brisk and brilliant...

>Tatwamariya Tarama (Adi) - Papanasam Sivan

Madurai Mani's rendition is a classic... the kalpanasvaras
come wafting so pleasantly and unobtrusively in his
N D M ., N D M ., M N N D madisEkharan maganE

>Guruvayurappane (Adi) - Ambujam Krishna

TNS, Santhanam etc have rendered this well.

>Thambulava Kollu (Adi) - Purandharadasa

MLV used to render this ... it is on a AVM cassette
of her PurandaradAsa kritis...

>Ritigowla features in several Ragamalikas,
>Post pallavi ragamalika swarams, and even
>used as a main Ragam tanam Pallavi piece.

Balamurali's playback singing of "cinna kaNNan azhaikkirAn",
which is based on Ritigaula, was very popular in the late
70s...
