I am interested in finding out the name of the Hindustani raga for the
song 'Vaishnava janato'. I heard a very beautiful recording of the song
played on the sarod. But there was no documentation available of the
recording, the artist, the raga etc. I am told it was the original tune
that was being played on the sarod.
Since a few different versions of the song seem to be in vogue, I will
try to explain the melody in words here - the swaras used for the
beginning phrase were 'Sa Ri Sa Ga Ma Ga...Ga Ma Pa Pa Pa Dha Pa Ma
Ga...' . The swaras used were Chatushruti rishabam, Anthara gandharam,
Suddha madyamam, chatushruti dhaivatam and kaisiki nishadham. Kakali
nishadham was also used, and sometimes kaisiki was arrived at, sliding
down from kakali.
Thanks & regards,

the version that i'm familiar with (and i assume it's the original) is in
raga khamaj, a light raga which uses shuddha ni in ascent, komal ni in
descent, and all other notes shuddha (i think).
i've come across a recording of it on a cd by m.s.gopalakrishnan and
sultan khan where it's just identified as "dhun"!

Vaishnav Jan... is a bhajan originally in Gujarathi by Narsi Metha.
Gandhiji included that in his regular daily prayers. From then on it
has been popularized all over India. The tune is based on Raaga
Khamaaj. A recording on sarod would most likely by Amjaad Ali Khaan.
Pt. V.G. Jog also plays that bhajan many times.
