I believe both these ragas have the same scale "sa ga ma pa ni sa"
and "sa ni da pa ma ga ri sa". Then what's the difference. I know only
one piece in dhanASri - a thillana "gIta dhuniku" by swAti tiruNAL.

thanks

No, they are in different scales. Abheri is a janya of Kharaharapriya (mela
22) and Dhanasri is janya of Shankarabharanam (Mela 29)
Their scales are of as follows (in r1r2r3:g1g2g3 format)
abheri:
sg2m1pn2s+ : s+n2d2pm1g2r2s
dhanasri
sg3m1pn3s+ : s+n3d2pm1g3r2s

i too havent heard of any other dhanasri song except the one you mentioned.

I feel Dhanasri doesn't have a N3. It uses the same N2. And its not janya of sankarabharanam. Its janya of Natabairavi. So is Abheri. Please dont mistake me for pointing out this. I wish to have correct info in the post. Thats why quoting this here.

If you need more info here,

http://www.karnatik.com/c1242.shtml

Again the above link has a mistake in it.

Mistake in the site:

raagam: dhanashree
20 naTabhairavi janya
Aa: N2 S G2 M1 P N2 S
Av: S N2 D1 P M1 G2 R1 S

Where does R1 come here? It should be R2 rather. Be it janya of natabairavi or karaharapriya, doesn't matter, it has to be R2.

To my knowledge, Dhanasri and Abheri varies only in prayoga and you can see the other difference being the Arogana starting from Ni. Lot of Ragas like Sindhubairavi, Yamunakalyani have this in common.

Raga Abheri is Carnatic equivalent of Hindustani Raga Bhimpalasi.
