Second that recommendation. BTW, this album was released about 2 years ago.
His selections are great as is his rendition. What is even more unusual is
the degree of bhAva he expresses in verses like panjiyoLir vinjukuLir..
(Surpanakha's arrival), Kallaa mathiye kathir vaannilave (Sita's despair),
uRanguhindra kumbhakarna (you guessed right), sivanO allan (Ravana wondering
about Rama's prowess in battle) and vemmadanga (Ravana's death).
The album is available on an AVM double cassette with a Thanjavur-style
painting on the cover.
Though I am not very knowledgeable about Carnatic music, the complete
album was
thoroughly enjoyable. Infact it was the first time I was listening to
SeshaGOpAlan and I liked it
a lot. Can anyone suggest more cassettes of SeshaGOpAlan?
The selection of the songs is good, and a concise version of the Ramayanam is
presented.
If you get a chance, don't miss to listen to this album. Understanding
the lyrics also
heightens the listening pleasure as was in my case.
Bye.
Cheers,
N.R. Ramesh.
(2) What are the four ragams in "theeraattu viLaiyaattu

Dear Revathi,
The raagam of the 4th part is Maand.
Meanwhile I am giving the words of Brochevaarevarura (as far as
I can remember, because, as I said before, its difficult to write
down the words of songs and its easier to sing them!!)
Pallavi
Brochevarevarura, Ninnuvina revarura (several times, many sangathis)
Ni charanaambujamunu ne, vidajaala karunaala vaala (back to Brocheva..)
Anupallavi
O chathuraa nanaadivandita ni kupara kela naiyaa (repeat)
Ni charithamu bogadaleni naa chinta dichi padamu lichi vegame
(Do you need the Chittaiswaram here, I'll write that later if
you need it)
Charam
Sitapate naapai, ni kabhimaanamule da, vaatatmaja srithapaada
na moralanivina, raada
Aathuramukha kari raajuni brochina vaasudevude nivugadaa
naa paadagalella pogottigettiga naasa seyibatti vidavaga
------------
(not sure there)
Again chittaiswaram (back to Brocheva...)
Tell me if I have made some mistakes
Bye

Yes, the T.N.Seshagopalan album is quite enjoyable although some of
the ragams he has chosen bring a different mood (the Ponnin Oli song
kept reminding me of the Lalli (lullaby?) song for Rama by
Thyagarajar).
I would like to bring to the attention of the netters of a HMV
cassette (1992) by M.S.Subbulaxmi titled "Kamban Kaviyamudham" which
has songs from Kambar's Ramayanam.
While we are on it, I'd like to know if anybody is aware of collection
of songs from Arunachala Kavirayar's Ramayanam. Also any details
about the composer (Arunachala Kavirayar), I know very little
about, would be of interest.
Finally does anybody know the composer of the Nama Ramayanam ?(it goes
like Shudda Bhrama Paratpara Ram ... and I have heard MS sing it)
It's interesting that this discussion is taking place around Rama
Navami (which was yesterday I believe), time of wonderful kacherris
in Bangalore.
thanks,
--Suresh
Ps: Those interested in this thread might also find the book titled
"Many Ramayanas: the diversity of a narrative tradition in South Asia"
that has articles by A.K.Ramanujam among others, of interest.

Bombay sisters have an album on songs by Arunachala Kavirayar. The album is
very pleasant to listen to.

ganesh
Seshagopalan himself has a double album on the Sangeetha label - I
unfortunately have only vol 1. But it's very nice too. D.K. Jayaraman
alongwith his students has also sung the compositions of Arunachala Kavi
(label - Gita?).
I believe Arunachala Kavi is one of the tamil sangit mummoorthigal -
muthuthAndavar & mArimuththA pillai being the other 2. In fact, Tyagaraja
is supposed to have listened to his mother singing the songs of A. Kavi
in his childhood & thus developed an affection for Rama. This may be one
reason he never sang in Tamil - since the songs already existed.
