Hi,

I would appreciate it if someone could provide information on the
raga "Jonpuri". I see some similarities to "Shanmugapriya".

Thanks,

Raga Jaunpuri is an offshoot of Raga Asavari and uses the komal
gandhar, komal dhaivat and the komal nishad.

One possible set of Aroha/Avaroha is:

Aroha: S R M P (n)d P, M P d n S"
UUUUUUU

Avaroha: S" (n)d P, M P, R M P d M P (P)g (S)R S
UUUUUUUUU

Key: All shuddha swaras in caps, komal in lower-case
U indicates fast passage, () a grace note and " the upper register

A sample chalan would be:

R M P (n)d P, M P d n S"...R" n S", (n)d P, R M P (P)g (S)R S...
UUUUUUU

Although Raga Asavari uses the same set of notes, it is more vakra
in its chalan than Jaunpuri. It also omits the nishad in the ascent.

Kishori Amonkar's rendition of the "choom chananana bichua baaje" is
a fine introduction to Raga Jaunpuri. Kesar Kerkar also has a small
recording in the Raga. An Asavari/Jaunpuri example from film music
is the Talat Mehmood classic, "meri yaad me tum na aaNsoo bahaanaa,
na ji ko jalaanaa, mujhe bhool jaanaa", scored by Madan Mohan. The Raga
is also a favourite of the Marathi natyasangeet and bhajani crowd.

Actually Jonpuri is very similar to the Karnatic raga
nAgagandhAri. Muttuswami Dikshitar's famous composition sarasijanabha
sOdhari is the only composition I have heard in this raga.

This information is an excerpt from the upcoming Chalan work produced by the
Batish Institute. The research was done by the eminent singer/composer/music
director - Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish.

Raga Jaunpuri:

This is a N.I. Raga. Playing time Late Morning. Thaat is Asavari. It is also
called Yavanpuri or Jeevanpuri. Its arohi/avarohi is Shaudava/Sampooran.
Avoid the note Ga in Arohi.

S.I. raga Dhavalika Gaula of Natabhairavi Mela has exactly the same scalar
construction. S.I. raga Shudha Deshi is similar to this raga with the
exception that the sixth note of the scale is tuned as a tri-shruti Dha.

Natabhairavi is closer than Shanamukhapriya. Since the first uses Shudha Ma
and the second prati Ma

Hope this helps.

Among the few vilambits I´ve listened to , Vid Ashwini Bhide´s caught my attention because she uses different slow swara combinations/permutations that keeps one in suspense . Maybe she is using sangatis that are not sung by many others , not sure though ...
