What's yours? I'm trying to put together an idea of the jazz flute influence
on hip hop, and would like to hear everyone' opinion.

Thanks,

Pete

First off, flutes are my thing. Almost any beat with a flute I'm gonna dig.
So, first thing that jumped into my mind was The Platform Remix (Alchemist) and
The Game(P Rock, f. Theme from Girl From Petrovka).

A quick flip through some CD's and I'd say...

Ghostface - The Forest (Alchemist)
Tupac - St8 Ballin
Dre- Bad Intentions
Pun - 100% (f. Schifrin - Anita)
Beatnuts - Off The Books (f. Buddy Baker - Sign Song)
Nore - Come Thru
Talib Kweli - Whatcha Wanna Do (Hi-Tek?,)

Oh yeah...

Nature - Nature's Theme.

That one was also fresh. Possibly more of an oboe - but is that a flute? Maybe
a big deep one.

Don't know about favorite and jazz, but here's
a few joints with flutes in it:

There's an oriental-type flute solo in "Face In The Basin"
by Canadian crew Dream Warriors from '91.

More on the funk side is the prominently featured flute
in "Make Sweet Luv 2 U" by Nemesis ('95).

The break of Special Ed's "Ya Wish Ya Could" ('90)
features a nice little flute segment that a beat junkie
might recognize. This one's jazzy.

Can't forget MC Serch's "Scenes From The Mind" ('92),
to me THE rap song that uses a flute sample, which is
"Flute Thing" by Blues Project (say the liner notes).

A flute also plays a key role in Tela's "These Hoes" ('98).
That's one cut you +need+ to check out.

Also, there's a heavy flute influence in the keyboard-
generated sounds of the "WE COME STRAPPED"
CD by MC Eiht featuring CMW ('94), an utterly brilliant
album.

To my ears, it's a flute- I may be wrong...

Caca Gosa Vixen- Heltah Skeltah featuring Illa Noyz.

Taken from Fiddler On The Roof I believe.

Fits PERFECTLY with those drums.
