NATIONWIDE BOYCOTT SET AGAINST NELLY'S PIMP JUICE
www.mtv.com/news/articles...lines=true

Nelly's Pimp Juice is not in stores yet, and some leaders of black
organizations want to keep it that way.

Project Islamic Hope, the National Alliance for Positive Action, and the
National Black Anti-Defamation League want to keep the rapper's energy drink
off store shelves in Los Angeles. Leaders of the three organizations staged
a press conference in South Central Los Angeles Tuesday (September 9) to
make their feelings about the energy drink and the word that inspired its
name known (see "Taste Nelly's Pimp Juice ‹ No Backstage Pass Necessary").

"We're calling for a national boycott of Nelly's Pimp Juice," said Najee
Ali, Executive Director of Project Islamic Hope. "We feel betrayed by Nelly.
He's someone who's trying to make money by using and marketing an energy
drink that's supposed to be healthy. But there's nothing healthy about using
the name pimp. It's a vile name that's really demeaning and insulting to
women."

The groups are first starting their anti-pimp campaign in their own
community by contacting the Korean Grocers Association, an organization to
which most delis and convenience stores in the South Central area belong,
and asking them not to carry the drink.

"We want to make sure that we chase Nelly's Pimp Juice out of our
community," Ali said. "We're not going to allow it. We know Pimp Juice won't
be sold in Beverly Hills. I doubt very seriously whether the white community
will embrace and promote a brand called Pimp Juice in their stores."

Despite the local focus, their cause has already garnered national interest.
Wire services have picked up the story. The Reverend Al Sharpton has been
contacted.

Although not part of the press conference, Minister Paul Scott, founder of
the Messianic Afrikan Nation in Durham, North Carolina, was one of the first
to speak out against the drink, with special emphasis aimed at the
suggestion made in the product's press release, that Nelly's Pimp Juice
"mixes perfectly with numerous vodkas."

"The black community is in danger right now," he said in a statement. "As
black men we should be building a nation of strong black leaders, not a
nation of superenergized, drunk pimps."

Nelly's spokesperson did not return calls by press time.

Dumb shit. How is it that they will rally to get rid of an energy drink because
of the word "pimp" but they wont rally to get St Ides, Olde English and 211 off
the shelves? Why dont they rally to get cigarettes off the shelves? Why not
rally to get Black Tail out of the corner stores? Stupid shit.

Because 211 OE and Ides are wonderful creations, where as pimp juice is not.
Not to mention nelly doesn't have nearly the lobbying power as liquor
companies.

>Why dont they rally to get cigarettes off the shelves?

Why would someone want to do a thing like that?

Whoever is manufacturing it has morons working in their marketing
department. Anyone w/ even just an Intro to Marketing course under
their belts could have predicted that naming it Pimp Juice could pose
a potential problem.

Dumb assess.......change the fucking name, market it as a sports drink
and tell Nelly to write a catchy new song to help promote it.

Unfortunately, being black myself and given our somewhat slanted
history, a "name" goes a long way in either advancing or killing you(and
your idea or position) as it relates to "us". "Pimp" is the new
stereotypical name(after "nigga" of course) for any virile, young black
man and it's raising the hairs on the necks of "progressive-minded"
blacks to think that the youth are now riding with this tag for
themselves. A few weeks ago, over at www.blackelectorate.com, I read a
piece that was essentially saying the same thing relative to Nelly's
ignorance. In my opinion, he basically made an error in the naming of
his product. Russell Simmons' DefCon3 is a product I'm still looking
for(and will support)at my local 7-11(the only place his company would
be selling it). No one, nationally, has even said a word about his new
energy drink. The difference.....a name.
PEACE!

Ah, better get a boycott together. With the name "DefCon" he's hindering black
progression by saying its "def" to be a "con." Be real, Quest, you dont wanna
support Pimp Juice because its Nelly. You are supporting Defcon3 cause its
Russell.

Juice I KNOW you're sharp, so if I said that "DefCon" is an abbreviation
of "defense condition" (a term employed by our military forces), surely
this is something that didn't go past you, right? I KNOW it didn't, you
where just being rhetorical.

Juice Coldmaney rhetorically chides:

Quest, you dont wanna support Pimp Juice because its Nelly. You are
supporting Defcon3 cause its Russell.>>

Huh?! Where are you coming from with your line of reasoning? This is so
far off the track that it doesn't even garner a laugh. "Def" to be a
"con"".....when does it stop? I'm real, I wouldn't buy "Nellyville"
whereas I have bought music from Def Jam artists. Music quality and
longevity being my parameters....you've got Nelly and you have, say,
Public Enemy and/or L.L. Cool J. Think it through, Juice. Both are
sports drinks, but Defcon3 is the one I read about first, I'll try
Nelly's product if it comes out. There's no need for you "reaching".
PEACE!

and PIMP is an acronym for person into making profit. Either way boycotting is
fucking ridiculous.

its the same logic that says Nelly wants all blacks to go out and be pimps
cause his drink is called "pimp juice," and should be boycotted.
