I think the newer generation of hip hoppers (indy heads) have really overlooked
the art of thug rappers. While heads sweat over who is the most cerebrel and
deep, the thug mc's maintain . they don't crossover, sell out or make gay love
songs. the represent hip hop in a way only they can. Sadly. they get bunched
together with the NORe's and the tupac's but there are actually mc's who are
both dope and thuggish to the bone. here' s my little list of dope thug mc's.
starting from the beginning:

just ice and schooly D: the originators. hard and dope.

kool G rap: besides the fatc he's an ill guy, he's also one of the greatest
mc's ever to walk the planet.
"i got a bullet with your anem your address and your phone number"

MC ren: "now look at me I'm a crazed bitch!" It doesn't get any better.

MOP (billie danzini is my preference): "The most buetifullest thing in this
world's a desert eagle, nigga, that shit's deisal!"
i love that shit. nothing gets me amped like an ill MOP joint. i'm a pretty
peaceful guy but catch me drunk with that on my walkman and i'll be picking
fights with homeless men.

The bushwackass: very underrated in the thug catagory.
"i be that nigga you keep duckin' on the ave, you didn't know the half about my
boot in your ass"
"mayhem until the AM, my revolver is my problem solver"
so ignorant, it's almost genius.

Big l: he was a good one. i'll miss him.

freddie foxxx: I think of him as an updated, really amped kool g rap. he's so
dope to me. Definately in my top ten mc's.
"When i'm in flip mode i put my gat to your brain,
and then i snatch that cha cha cha chain"
Funny and rugged go great together.

Tim dog: the ultimate thug. so dumb yet so dope.
"I can't believe how dope i am, i'm the muthafuckin man, smakcin' mc's with one
hand, don't cry you little bitch, be a man!"
he's also exceptionallt ill cause he shouted amd names out. just straight up
dissed mad people. i love it.

Grand daddy IU: sure, he's more the smooth criminal but i can't front on some
of his harder lines
anyone who rhymes "accomplish" with "stomped, bitch" gets love from me.

well, that's all that come to mind but don't forget: in hip hop, there is room
for all types of styles. thug is no different. as long as you can differenciate
between the crap and the dope shit, it's all good.

Fame is WAY doper than Danze to me, he can just flat out rhyme alot
better. Danze's rhymes are cheap. I like most of the cats you named,
especially G. Rap, I LOVE Mobb Deep though, I think they do it the best,
'cause not only are their lyrics thugged out, their beats make you wanna
murder somebody. They just got that vibe yo. "Twistin' your mind out
position/ you wanna figure this shit? rewind it and listen/ quick, you
might miss this/ olympic/ rap javelawn/ travel beyond/ your weak song/
doin' this for too long to not come strong/ you only a pawn in Viet
Nam". I think Tragedy does it well too. Notice the vets are usually the
ones who really know how to do shit the best.

What most of the MC's in the original post all have in common is a sense
of humor. To me at least that is a necessary quality for any thug MC.
When they come out all serious with all this hardness and boasts of
violence and crime and shit I'm turned off because I start to think
"does this cat really expect me to believe this or worse does he believe
it himself." When the rhymes get stupid (good stupid i.e. Freddie
Foxx) I get the hype feelings thug rap is supposed to initiate plus I'm
hearing someone really flip it lyrically satisifying my need to hear
someone being truly creative. The majority of "thug MC's" however
don't do this. They don't understand what rhyming is truly about and
demonstrate this everytime they're on the mic. It doesn't matter what
the fuck you rhyme about it's about the flow, the voice and most of all
the lyrics themselves. It's about expressing yourself (whoever you
are) in a way that is original, interesting and entertaining.

Yo, Mobb Deep is mad underrated in my opinion. It was in some ng, this
one or alt.rap, about a year ago when someone said Mobb Deep was just
"murder rap". Maybe it's just me but I think that they're much deeper than
that. Yeah, they have the usual songs about killing, drug dealing and all
the other things that many indy jockers hate. They also go deeper. Their
song don't always glamorize shit. "I swore our crew would live forever, I
guess I was wrong" and other lines in Cradle to the Grave let you know that
people really do die. Much of the Infamous album is on this tip. They go
beyond just glamorizing thugs, at least to me much of the album is
depressing. There's a lot of hoplessness on it. Plus they have some of
the illest beats around. Is it me or does Havoc get no love as a
producer? He always comes up with something dope that just gets you hyped.

I'm with you here. 2 of my favorites since they came out. That track
"Who's Wylin'" was hype...

MOP will always be there to get me amped....I loved that shit they did
with Red Hot Lover Tone, Prince Po, and BIG...

No doubt, Havoc is definitely in the top 3 producers to me, he never
makes a weak beat. And another thing about Mobb Deep is they got the
voices yo, its like you can hear the pain and the fury in their voices,
same with Nas, and G. Rap. Mobb's on some "I'm tired of livin' life this
way, crime pay, but for how long? 'till you reach a down fall, thug
niggas sorround ya'll four-pound ya'll, animal Instinct, these niggas
gettin' clapped off instinct", they make flat out the best chorus's. The
non-believers are gonna feel it when "Murdah Muzik" drops. By the way, I
interviewed Prodigy and Cormega two weeks ago, and they had alot to say
especially Cormega, I mean they were namin' names and everything, If any
of ya'll wanna know about it then let me know. If not, I dont care.
Peace.

I agree with you here. I really dig that one chorus off Noyd's album where
they are
talking about leaving people limbless like greek sculptures, and that one
song
off the Sunset Park soundtrack seems ridiculously good to me.

You should most definately post the interview, or at least describe it. I
would love
to hear what those guys have to say.

Well, I'm glad you asked. That was "For My Niggaz" a rough track with
the aforementioned artists. I have it on this old tape back at my place.
Just a rough ass track, and MOP are there to top it off. BIG has some
line about cutting nice like a Ginsui. Damn, I need to go back and
listen to that song. Don't know if it was on an album or just a B side,
but I was feeling that one.

Peace
