Oh my God. Eminem is ridiculous. I want his album NOW. Those songs are
funny as hell! The third verse in the one with Dr. Dre is absolutely
hysterical. With the right marketing, Eminem could go plat. Think about
it: Signed to a major label with great distribution, gets production and
guest raps from Dre, is white *and* dope, is side-splittingly funny, has
sick subject matter and is fucked up in the head. He's loaded wih
gimmicks, *plus* he's ill both lyrically and flow-wise! What more could
you want?

What surprised me is that these songs were actually dope. When
I said I wanted Eminem to get better production I wasn't thinking of
Dre at all. But if Dre produced these he gets his "props". Not only
are they dope they sound like they could even blow up on commercial
radio. I just hope on his album he gives the dope underground
kids he's down with. And no, not those wack kids on his EP.

Shit. . . that was dope. . . you know, what's up with Dre? I'm starting to
think that whole thing with ditching gangsta rap wasn't just a gimmick and
that he really is into some real Hip-Hop. . . I mean, look at who he's
signed. Golden State Warriors, Eminem, hell, even the Firm weren't THAT
wack. Remember how awful some of those groups were on that Aftermath
compilation? Nice to see that he's cleaned up his act a little. I still
kinda wish that Snoop would've signed with Aftermath instead of No Limit,
though. . . I mean, say what you want about the commercial gangsta garbage
of the early 90's, but some of the material Snoop and Dre performed together
was some DOPE Hip-Hop.

Anyone think that Dre could actually make it as a prominent figure in the
underground Hip-Hop scene? Maybe that's what he's going for. . . I mean, the
guy has more money than he knows what to do with, so maybe he just wants to
"keep it real" a little better now. Who knows?

Technically neither song is without Dre cause in the first one Dre has two
lines in the first third of the song... but then again when have I ever been

Oh, snap! Was I talking about things that would appeal to a mass market
that doesn't know shit about underground hip-hop? By Golly, it seems that
I was! See, since most mainstream hip-hop fans don't have access to
underground hip-hop, they haven't heard anyone like El-P or Esoteric, and
therefore they have never heard a dope white MC, since Vanilla Ice and
Everlast do not qualify. The White America that buys the majority of
hip-hop CDs secretly yearns for a Great White Hope. So it would appeal to
the record buying masses that he was white, yet could actually rap good. I
know what you're thinking: "Ooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh, *now* I get it! My
bad, I fucked up! I'll never respond to you with some ignorant bullshit
again." Well, I'm glad you feel that way. I had a feeling you'd come

But seriously, I'm perfecly OK with being ignorant about that little fact,
as there was no way for me to know otherwise. It was ignorant, but not
stupid, whereas sometimes other people make comments that are both.

> As for the Eminem comments about a "Great White Hope," maybe

Well, yes, in the burbs where I live a whole lot of white people do like
rap. Maybe not a majority of whites like rap, but whites still make up the
majority of the rap-purchasing audience, and they would like to see a dope
white MC. Therefore, by no fault of his own, Eminem's whiteness coupled
with his dopeness is a gimmick to mainstream listeners, who may (with the
correct marketing) buy his album en mass.
I find it odd that you chose to mention the burbs specifically, like I'm
supposed to be ashamed of living there. Not everyone can get a caretaker's
shed at Yale, you know. Back to the GWH, no, it's not something I yearn
for, I've already heard several dope white MCs. Major-label listeners
haven't.

BTW, where do you live?

Okay, maybe. But I have to admit, their album wasn't as bad, in my mind, as
a lot of heads were saying it was. I was almost surprised; I expected it to
be total trash. There's no way I'd buy it, but a few tracks weren't bad.

>But don't forget about the Last Emperor and Black Eye Peas.

I DID forget about Last Emperor, and honestly, I've never even heard
anything by Black Eye Peas. Ain't it weird that Dre's signing all these
acts, though? Could he be an underground Hip-Hop head stuck in a popular
commercial rapper's body? I don't know, I've always had lots of respect for
Dr. Dre (can't front on some of his tracks), and his signing of all these
underground rappers just confirms that respect again. This really is weird,
though, when you think about it. . . I mean, Dre's probably the closest
thing to Puffy in the rap industry. Could you imagine Puff signing Co-Flow
to Bad Boy or something like that? It ain't that different than Dre signing
all these underground acts to Aftermath. Of course, who knows, maybe that's
what Dre was intending all along for his new label.

I wouldn't say that. I would consider Master P or Jermain Dupri alot
more like Puff than Dre is. And Dre is going to try to make money off
these artists. I think he actually thinks artists like Last Emperor, Eminem,
Black Eye Peas, and Golden State Warriors can be successful. Do
you really think Puff would hear Company Flow and say, "I bet I could
blow these guys up with the proper marketing" (which is what Dre was
probably thinking when he heard the artists he signed).

I really think Eminem will blow up...he's got dope dope lines that will keep
us interested...

That sick shit will pull another core audience all around the country, from
Brotha Lynch Hung fans to the Geto Boyz fans and so forth...

Dre will get him some exposure, though I don't see him blwoing up the same way
Snoop did, despite the gangsta lyrics and all Snoop is more radio friendly
IMO.

But I think he will really find in audience with alternative skater types, the
people who jumped on Wu Tang. I think he taps into that death metal kind of
style, plus being white is a bonus in this case. He can pull some Marilyn
Manson fans I think.

It's gonna be interesting to see what happens, and what our reaction will be
to it.

I'm not sure what "our reaction" will be but I'm amped just off of how
funny he's been in the cuts I'veheard so far -- from "Just the Two of
Us" to "My Name Is... SLIM SHADY" to "Conscience". I was listening to
the latter of the three at work today and I had to bite my lip to stop
from falling out laughing when Eminem was like "Yeah right like I'm
gonna take advice from somebody that beat up Dee Barnes" and Dre said
"Motherfucker I'm gonna kill you!" and Em was like "Now now, temper
temper... thought I forgot didn't you? Mr. Straight Out of Compton, Mr.
N.W.A., Mr. West Coast.." and I was just falling the FUCK out. It
really doesn't come across in print -- you have to HEAR how funny it is.
It's the biggest laugh I've had in hip-hop since I picked up Kwest's
album at a used CD store!

Peace, Flash
