A promoter freind of mine recently mentioned to me that The Roots and Common
have a show date in nearby Seattle sometime in March. He tells me that
Black Star was originally also supposed to be on the bill (WHAT A SHOW!)...
but apparently they were dropped since Mos Def now refuses to perform at
venues that serve alcohol. Anybody else heard this?

Also, has anybody heard the rumour that Black Star beat down some
journalist?

This was a FAKE story in the latest issue of URB I think. I forget who
is on the cover though. The writer didn't feel that he was truly a
Hip-Hop journalist until he got beat down by a rapper. He deliberately
gets into a beef with BlackStar during an interview and they stomp him
silly.

Right on. I read that and I thought it was both a witty spoof and a
thought provoking examination of hip-hop "realness". I commend both
James Tai for writing it and URB for publishing it.

Kweil and Mos Def hardly seem like the type
to gang up on a journalist. They just bought
a bookstore in Brooklyn for god's sake...this should
maybe indicate some of the respect they have
for freedom of writing, no??

Those two seem pretty gentle, when you see them
in interviews and the like. Plus...wouldn't this
completely contridict the other rumour you heard
about Mos not performing in venues that serve alcohol
(I'm assuming its because he doesn't like drunk idiots
fighting and ruining the show).

I think that both stories are bullshit. Because later this month, Black Star
and De La Soul are doing a show at the Congress Theatre in here in Chicago.
And I know that the Congress serves beer. And I doubt that they would beat
down a journalist. I doesn't seem like something they would do.

I don't think so. BlackStar and De la are scheduled to perform here in
Milwaukee on Feb. 26th, and the place they're playing at ALWAYS has
liquor. I think they would have cancelled it by now, but as far as i
know, the show is going on. I also think that cutting out all joints
where people can drink would seriously limit the number of shows BlackStar
could do. I guess its possible, but i'm gonna lean towards not likely.

at first I assumed it was a joke. but then I started thinking行I wonder
what blackstar would think if they were mentioned in that way. what would
be the impact on their image? is the editor that cool with blackstar?

Actually, this past weekend they did 2 shows at the justice league here in san
francisco... and no alcohol was served either night. And i know for a fact
that they serve alcohol at that club... they must be setting that as a
condition with the promoters before they'll perform. So there may be some
truth to the first story.

Arrgggg... I'll go anyway, but damn I would love to see Mos Def live. I
understand not wanting to preform where alcohol is served. I'd want my
show to be about me and the music, not some drunk knucklehead. Especially
in Seatown, where everytime somebody does something stupid at a hip-hop
show, hip-hop gets blaimed and not some other factor (the aformentioned
drunk knuckleheads).

Still, I'm there with bells on.

Blackstar just played two nights in a row here in San Francisco at The Justice

I don't know about this year but this time LAST year he was at The Metro
in Chi-Town and the drinks was definitely on. I had a couple of beers at
the show - just enough to loosen up and get nice but not enough that I
was gonna worry about my driving later on. Besides which it was a two
hour plus show by the time Mood and Black Star had performed and Common
hadn't even done his set yet. :)

I've seen Mos Def perform at Tramps in NYC and they were serving
alcohol that night, but I've also heard through other promoter people that
he's refused to do shows where alcolhol was being served. As a
side note, I've personally dealt with Mos Def from a promoters stand point
and although he is a soild performer and many people come out to check for
him, he's pretty damn picky about details pertaining to shows. He didn't
want to
ride a bus or train down to VA with the other artists coming down(The
Arsonists,
Mr Live & Tony Bones, Company Flow, and some poets), rather,
he'd only come down if we paid from a plane ticket. This was more than a
year ago.
I was like "yo, you got one single out sun-doobie, check yourself".

About the journalist getting beat down, that was James Tai from URB
and it was a spoof about how comical journalism and getting beat down
are making strange bed-fellows. peace

well, a bus ride from NYC to DC, is about 4 - 4 and a half hours. Then a couple
hours from DC to most places in VA. The bus is kind of a pain, but it's by far
the cheapest. Greyhound from NYC to DC is like $50, round trip. I've done it
many times; probably'll do it again this spring break.

That's fine, I'm just saying that they Mos Definitely *did* serve alcohol
when I saw him and Talib at The Metro in Chicago last year. If that is
how Mos Def and Talib Kweli feel now, it isn't how they've ALWAYS felt.

Not necessarily - maybe now that they've got more clout
(as little as it may be) they're more convicted and
have a little power to stand by their convictions.

Last spring I took a Greyhound from Christiansburg, VA to NYC and it
took like 13 hours (they stopped crazy times). It took so long, but it
was definintely cheap as hell.

But you used to ride Em's nuts SO hard, and now all you do is hate on him.
Also, about Dr. Dre changing his mind. Didn't Andre from Outkast once say, "no
drugs or alcohol so I keep the signal clear"? But, you see, Andre does smoke
weed, and I wouldn't doubt it if he drinks, considering what he was wearing in
the new video ; ) Point is, people contradict themselves, but rarely do they
support something one day, and then take the opposite stance the next.
Regardless if Dr. Dre did the same thing, you're still fraudulant.

BTW, Cube wrote what Dre said about weed on the NWA album...whether Dre
believed it or not is another story...

Now, I do think it is kinda hypocritical to recite lyrics that you don't agree
with, but not as bad as writing something yourself that you don't believe in,
then reciting it...

I realize people misunderstand what I said or what I meant about Eminem.
Trying to clear the air is really not going to be possible, and if people
think it's fraudulent that I used to like him and now I don't they are
entitled to. But I'm still entitled to change my mind. I think what
Alan said about Dee Tee's Amphibians review applies here though: he did
not HATE their shit, he just did not UNDERSTAND their shit. Right now,
I'm "pissed" at Eminem. I don't "hate" Eminem. I'm concerned by the
fact he would totally compromise an entire song until all of the formerly
funny punchlines were garbage just so he could get play on MTV and BET.
It smells funny to me. If Eminem is really as hardcore & uncompromising
about hip-hop as e'rybody who says they met him claims he is, how can he
possibly be happy rhyming about elves, Pamela Lee's lips, and fifths of
Kool-Aid? That doesn't make sense.

I'm really not going to go into any more detail on this here in the ng.
If what I said leaves you feeling I'm fraudulent, that's your business.
But I feel sort of like a member of Clinton's cabinet post-confession.
It's like being told "I didn't do it" for months and making everybody
believe it and then saying "Sorry, I lied". I thought Eminem was going
to come out as a hardcore underground artist and now it looks like he
is trying to go pop and have millions of white kids on his jock. If
white people pledging allegiance to a white rapper just because he's
white and fresh doesn't bother you then we've had the wrong discussion.

Well, it is certain that Mos Def isn't very consistent on this stand of
his, but to add more anecdotal evidence to the thread, I saw Blackstar
perform this past Friday in VA, and there was no alcohol available. I
know Mos Def is a Muslim, and he himself does not drink. I would imagine
that if he can use his influence to have an alcohol-free show, he will do
it, but that the inability to do so wouldn't necessarily prevent him from
doing a show. I thought the alcoholfreeness of the show was kind of funny
when Del (he also performed) was up on stage talking about weed all the
time. But, I guess Muslims can smoke if they want to. At least I know a
Muslim who doesn't drink, but smokes a fair amount. The Blackstar show
was dope, though.
