Wassup everyone, I've got a bit of a query about the Geto Boys song
"Gangsta of Love". I bought the album (on vinyl) this song is off in
1989 or 1990 (can't remember now), and then I bought the CD yesterday of
the same album (self titled "Geto Boys" - but there is another version
called "Grip it! On that other level" as well).

Anyway, GOL on vinyl has this slow beat which is sampled from some song
called "The Joker" I think, and then in the chorus the line "Call me the
ganster of love" is repeated. On the CD version the classic "Gangster
Boogie" line is repeated with a guitar riff (from a similar musical
genre as "The Joker") is used.

Two versions of "Gangster of Love" were released; one with the "Call me the
gagster of love" sample in the chorus ("The Joker"/Steve Miller Band), the
other with the funky guitar riff ("Sweet Home Alabama"/Lnnyrd Skynyrd) as the
melody sample and less the chorus. Don't which one I like better, they're
both the bomb......

altho I've been looking for the original (the one you have on vinyl) and have
yet to find it. Any way you could dub it?

Does anyone know what the deal is here? The CD is copyrighted 1990, I've
got a feeling my vinyl (which is in another state so I can't get to it at
the moment) might be copyright 1989. Did the writers/producers/performers
of "The Joker" get upset with the sample being used, or is it just a
remix for no reason?

A more detailed answer.......

Gangster of Love was first on "Grip it! On that other Level" (1989) and
contained the Steve Miller sample.

Then it was re-released on Def American's "The Geto Boys" (1990) and the
initial pressing had the same sample, and the subsequent pressing(s) had
the new, different rock guitar sample. Maybe cause Steve actually heard
the song and didn't want his music associated with it. (?) Also, the
vocal arrangement is different on "Geto".

I learned this cause I bought the cassette on its release date, and didn't
buy the CD until 5 months later, when I was convinced that it was (still
is) one of the best "gangster" rap albums recorded. I was pissed and
called Rap-A-Lot and got this explanation.
