Damn, I thought that was just me!

I really wish I could recomend something but I really havent heard
anything that I can feel aside from Eryka Badu and Jamiroquai.

Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait for the new KRS joint.

I know what yer saying. I must say that I liked both sadat and camp lo.
But not a lot of stuff I want has been coming out. I have used this time
to get some older stuff that I missed the first time around, or that I
wasn't around for, much of it used... eg Soul Food, Tical (which was
better than I thought it would be, but wasn't great), Sex and Violence
(which is one of my favorite albums now), Yo Bum Rush The Show, etc. There
is so much that I have missed that I need to check. It's frustrating as
hell.

On the non hip hop tip, I got this album by Eric Benet which is pretty
good. It isn't as good as Erykah, but I like it. Another guy that comes
close here is Rahsaan Patterson... similar vibe to Benet. If you like one,
you'll like the other.

Stuff I'm waiting on: new KRS, the new JB's (is that gonna drop or what?),
Extra P (me and the rest of the hip hop world).

Peace

If you don't like R&B, stop reading this post now. I don't want to
start up the war right now.

As usual, I haven't heard everything that's been released recently,
but what I have heard hasn't knocked me off my feet. Camp Lo is good,
but easily forgettable. Same with Soul Assassins. BIG is nice, but it
doesn't have lasting power.

The albums that have been good have been surprisingly good have
been R&B albums. Tony,Toni,Tone, Johhny Gill, and 112 have put out
surprisingly good albums. These artists have gone back to the original
formula- Well written songs held up by good vocals and few gimmicks.

I just think that it's a down time for hip-hop. I think that there
are some albums that I'm looking forward to (but I said that last year
and was disappointed). To be honest, I hope to God that we don't have a
repeat of last year...disappointing albums from quality artists and
slept-on classics (Outkast & Bro. J).

One thing I have been doing lately is making mix tapes. There's an
odd mix of hip-hop tastes among my friend, so I pick the few good songs
off each album and put them all on a tape.

By "supermarket reviews", I'm guessing you mean something pretty short
and to the point.

Camp Lo - bought on the release date, taped "Lucini", "Swing", and
that "baby come on" song and sold 3 days later.

Scarface - bought on release date, actually fell asleep halfway
through "Money Makes the World Go Round". I never thought I'd hear a
boring Scarface LP in my life. The LP sounds rushed, in order to pay
a gambling debt or fulfill a contract obligation.

Notorious Big - bought on release date, listened to entire CD while
playing "Tekken 2". Good as a whole, but lacks the vision and concept
of "Ready to Die". Novelty songs "Playa Hater", "@%#% You Tonight",
"Another Bitch", etc. are funny exactly once. Puffy's commercial
tracks should have been saved for his own solo tape. The darker
tracks are great for fighting and role-playing games. I like
"Notorious Thugs", and "Sky's the Limit" for reasons I do not
understand.

Question: Do you think DMC was a guest on Big's "My Downfall" because
he was less expensive than a sample from "Together Forever"? I will
consider this when I start (executive) producing records.

Tela - This CD has broken the record for most time spent in my
changer and has never been in its CD case. The lyrics don't break any
new ground, but the creative, risky production goes in a new direction
as far as R&B and hip-hop is concerned. (Check the porno-flick
keyboards in "Sho Nuff", and the blues track following it). A lot of
live instruments mixed with samples, just enough sampling to alienate
a Roots fan, but more than enough bass and funk to draw in South and
West coasters. My favorite LP of 1997 that came out in 96.

I know what you mean...I got Camp Lo in early December because I was
writing a review of it for an online zine', it's a pretty forgettable LP.

Personally I don't see '97 being a good year in LP releases. '96 was
very bad for tight albums, the only one I dug (meaning it kept my
interest from start to finish) was "Stakes is High" and I felt it was De
La's weakest album.

Lately I have been listening to the Latyrx LP (kinda nice), Siah and
Yeshua Dapo ED's EP (I'm starting to get tired of it though) and O-Dub's
new mix tape.

Looking into the months ahead, I'm looking forward to the Jungle Bros.
(I'm hesitant though after the lame "How Ya Want It" 12", although I
heard that new cut with the Roots called "Brain" - the combo of the 2
crews puts out a pretty cool vibe.)

I think Extra P's album will be very wack because:

1) The shit is already very, very dated material
2) The first two joints that have already been released (Mad Scientist &
IJUSTWANNACHILL) were pretty bad, poor lyrics w/ corny ass choruses
3) I'm expecting an album better than "Breaking Atoms" and I know it won't
happen

I also have this feeling that Common's new LP and Organized Konfusion's
new LP will be plagued with boring, stereotypical beats...it's just a
feeling though.

Lately I've just purchased some jazz and jungle/breakbeat CD's I've been
wanting to hear as well as waiting for the "Deep Concentration" comp. and
Del's "Future Development" to arrive in the mail.

Is it just me or was "Done By The Forces of Nature" by the JB's one of
the most slept on hip-hop LP's ever??? Very beautiful music...

are waiting for the next shit and don't appreciate what is before you.
for example i've been transcribing some old finesse and craig g of late.

You heard the J-Live 12" with Braggin Writes (Domecracker remix) and Hush
the Crowd. If you haven't, you need to get it. It's even better than Siah
and Yeshua, which is also really good.

Lame? Did you get the Native Tongues remix? It was anything but lame.

I have never heard Organized Konfusion (I didn't see anything by them in
Phat Beats, maybe I didn't look close enough). However, I have the complete
opposite feeling about Common's album.

Yeah, I'm waiting for Future Development too. It is taking so absurdly long

Need to dig into the crates for some Funk, Soul Jazz, and Old Skool
because most of what comes out today is more wack than Jesse Jaymes. If
you like funk and jazz, check out Roy Ayers Ubiquity, Brother Jack McDuff,
Richard "Groove" Holmes, Candido, Lonnie Smith, Lou Donaldson, ... Any
albums from 1970-77 will move you. Guaranteed.

I bought the new US3 but I still cannot judge it!
I've been "trying" a lot of hip-hop/jazz (Guru,A tribe called quest,The
Roots) in the last period and so I tried to "walk the same way".
This album seems much more heavily based on jazz sounds then "hands on
the torch": on that albums I had like the impression that the band was
trying to "touch" also different styles (i.e there were at least 2 songs
singed in reggae style)

This is exactly what I've been doing the last couple of months. I can't
remember the last CD I bought when it came out. The most recent album I
bought was Dr. Octagon (Unreal. Get it now.). Most of my CDs in the last
several months have been 6 dollar used classics. Some of this shit is SO
phat. EPMD's second album is the fucking bomb. "So Watcha Sayin' " has
got one of the top ten phattest beats of all time. EVERY time that hook
comes on with the vocal sample and the scratching I fucking break my neck,
and I'm not a big head-banger when I listen to music. That song was worth
the price of the album by itself. I can spend a full half-hour listening
to it over and over and over, and it still gets me.
Diamond D was the shit. An unbelievably cool vibe throughout that whole
album. If you don't have _Criminal Minded_, go to http://www.cdnow.com
right now and get it. Mine was an original issue, so if you order it
you'll probably get an original too. Heavy D's second and third albums
have got to be the two happiest albums ever. You can't help but be in a
good mood when listening to these two. Slick Rick is hella tight also, I
think everyone should have this album.
_Paid In Full_ is dope, but I don't see how you can place it above
_Criminal Minded_. I was expecting more of Rakim on there; Eric B. isn't
exactly a master DJ (Maybe it's just because I've been listening to Q-Bert
on Doc Oc's album, but he really didn't impress me. In some parts it
sounded like he was breaking something). If you don't have this album,
though, you really should get it. It's a certified classic. This should
probably go under the hip-hop confessions thread, but every time I listen
to "Chinese Arithmetic" I feel like taking a piss.
I've also gotten Masta Ace's _Slaughtahouse_, Main Source's _Breaking
Atoms_, and Common Sense's first album. The first two of those three are
must-haves, the Common Sense album is borderline crap. At first I liked
it, but now it never gets play. Why did his voice crack so much? Eric B.
& Rakim's _Don't Sweat The Technique_ did not have me sweating the
technique at all. It was my first Rakim album, and I was very
disappointed. When I put the CD in the deck and heard "What's On Your
Mind", I was thinking, "Oh, that's why everyone likes them so much." Than
the rest of the album put me to sleep (not literally). Luckily I bought
_Paid In Full_ on faith in the reputation, and it will get heavy rotation.
Buy it.

On the non hip-hop tip, I bought the two-disc _Return of The Jedi Special
Edition_ soundtrack, and it's the bomb in a orchestra music sorta way. I
don't know if I can recommend it on this ng, but if you like film scores,
this is one of the all-time best. It's over 140 minutes long; that's
longer than the movie. It is a dope collector's item as well. It has phat
regal-looking packaging, unbelievably detailed liner notes with pictures,
it's digitally re-mastered, has unreleased tracks, pieces cut from the
film, the new songs for the Special Edition, and it will NEVER be
reprinted. Also, the CDs have cool laser-etched pictures of the Death Star
instead of a label, kinda like a hologram, that reflect all kinds of
colors. If you like Star Wars and was wondering which soundtrack to buy,
get Jedi, it's by far the longest, plus it's got the major themes from the
other two movies as well as the themes just from Jedi. If you want more
info, read the reviews at http://www.filmtracks.com .

I'm waiting on the new KRS, Rage, maybe Wu Tang, O.K., Slick Rick, EPMD
and am interested to see how Pete Rock's joint is gonna turn out. I doubt
I will get the new Heavy D, even though I am a big fan, if "Big Daddy" is
any indication of how the rest of the album will be, the new joint will be
worse than _Blue Funk_.
Wow, I didn't expect to write this much when I started. Sorry for
rambling; hope this helps someone beef up their collection or something.

Borderline crap? Hey, I respect people's opinions and all but isn't this
a bit harsh? While "Can I Borrow a Dollar?" didn't have the polished
finesse that "Resurrection" had, it's an unsung classic. Production and
lyrics were very different from anything you'd hear on the East or West
coast at the time. Provided, his lyrical "voice cracking" style was
promptly killed by the time "Resurrection" came out, but for all the
rawness, it's still a great, really great album that I still like
listening to.

i want to defend "uptown saturday night"; i know it is nothing
revolutionanry, but i think there's a lot on the record that is
interesting enough that it stands up to repeated listens. i'm not crazy
about geechi suade, but i think sonny cheebah's voice and delivery are
just hilarious. they aren't taking themselves very seriously on the
record -- i like that the personas are so blatantly crafted. they're the
first new group that i've heard in awhile that is deliberately
theatrical. they aren't wasting time trying to convince you that their
stuff is gritty and real. that leaves them more room to develop their
persona.

and the music is good. i think trugoy punted on "b-side to hollywood",
but "luchini", "park joint", "swing", "black connection", "nicky barnes"
-- those are all smart songs. i like the way they'll repeatedly trigger
the begionning of a sample (like on "swing") to create a percussive
effect. it's distinctive.

i like the album. it's not as good as black sheep's first, but it's done
a pretty good job of getting me through the beginning of the year while
i'm waiting for the new jungle brothers and krs to drop.

what about atliens? illadelph halflife? "stakes is high" was my favorite
record of '96, too, but i think it was a pretty competitive year. and no
way do i think it's de la's poorest album, but then again, trying to
decide on the worst de la soul album is like trying to pick the worst
beatle.

hearing the jungle brothers do their new material live, i'm pretty sure
that "raw deluxe" will be solid.

that would be very disappointing. i'm expecting common's newest to be
outstanding. i wasn't too crazy about "resurrection", but i have the
feeling that he is improving over time, and this would be his moment to
drop a classic. it wouldn't be shocking if he fucked it up, but i'd be
mildly surprised.

that's a great album. it *is* beautiful. i think most people give it
credit for being interesting, but you don't hear it played or discussed
very often. "feelin' alright", "beedz on a string", "acknowledge your own
history"... those songs are brilliant. one of the all time best albums.

i don't usually expect many new albums in winter, so i've been catching
up on stuff that i didn't catch the first time it was released, most of
which iwas reccommended to me by people on this newsgroup:

labcabincalifornia (as good as it gets, an absolute classic)
all balls don't bounce (hair-raising, especially "arythmaticulas")
organized konfusion (haven't decided yet)
psychoanalysis by price paul (hilarious, but really not too good)
soul on ice
southernplayalistic (not as good as atliens)
dr. octagon (just not good)

Seconded. Personally I thought a lot of the Immenslope production
was pretty nice. I dig the songs like "Take It EZ", "Tricks Up My
Sleeve", "Breaker 1/9", "Two Scoops of Rhymes", and especially
"BLows to the Temple". The Beatnuts sole contribution "Heidi Hoe"
is REAL nice. And just think -- if it wasn't for the remix of
"Soul By the Pound" that everybody fell in love with we might not
even be talking about Com today.

Last few hip-hhop lps purchased:

Soul Assassins (very nice)
Funkmaster Flex Vol. II (even more disappointing than the first)
Heltah Skeltah (been rockin' this since I bought it)
Originoo Cun Clappaz (I think I listened to this once)

In the past 5 or 6 months I've also purchased Mint Conditions CD (For
some reason, it''s not holding me like Straight from the Mint Factory--
still good tho'), Best of Pieces of a Dream (not because of Tracy Lee,
I've wanted this for sometime), Steve Coleman, and I've been
trying to purchase a John Lee Hooker CD. I've dubbed Enya and Pharcyde
(latest-- I lost the tape). Money's been tight but in the next few
months, I'll be trying to get my hands on some Coltrane and Parker
stuff, War (saw a best of 197*-1994), and probably some other jazz or
blues. Right now, the only hip-hop I truly want is the video version of
OutKast's Jazzy Belle. I kinda want the new Biggie, but I need to hear
more tracks first.

Everyone is just about agreed that we havnt had much album action yet
this year but no body could say that there havnt been some wikid singles
especially independants like Shia and L the headtoucher.
After last year which was probably the worst 12 months of singles in
history this year has been amazing. + theres still 9 months left.

hmmm?

You're not excited for Hiero? Common? J-Live? KRS-One? GangStarr?

I know there a bunch of others due out this year (though who knows if they
will actually come out), I don't think the only thing to be excited about
is Wu-Tang.

I have to disagree with you about this year. I think there is very little to

look forward to except the wu-tang, and i think i'm more curious to see whether
they will be able to come up with a solid follow-up than i am to actually
listen to them.

Beatnuts, i bought their last album but i doubt that i would do it again.

Artifacts: (i thought this was out already), i have their last album(weak) but i
doubt they will show me anything with depth.

Maybe organized but i don't really anticipate them doing anything spectacular.

I forgot about common and gangstar. Now that you do mention it i wouldn't mind
hearing from them. i guess i have to hear a single before i oficially get
hyped about them.

Me and my roomate were talking the other day about this and the only person i
could say i was looking forward to hearing was krs, and this had a lot to do
with this hip-hop drought season we're in right now. I really don't like
"rapture"(sp?), (please dont flame me) so that may be why.

I have braggin writes and hush the crowd and i really think j-live is an
overated mc, so i can't be too hyped about him.

maybe i should be hyped about hiero but for some reason i would like to hear
casual first.

Damn i sound real depressed and negative about hip-hop today....

LYRICS BORN:
Cheyenne! Look at what the liquor brings about,
Throw out the magic basket full of wires and let them flail all on the
ground.
Why do they love it so?
Hatched seeds of light supported by light seaward breezes,
And we see these orbs in a car chase of sorts,
Absorbs sweet Lorraine and her dolly on the front porch and it escorts
them into
Deep, dark, space around Taurus,
And the Mormons can't explain the stars reflectin' in her corneas.
It makes they hearts beat hard against they corsets which
Bops they lockets up against they foreheads, and--
Who was it that sent this little girl's mind up into orbit?
She had to forfeit little dolly while in space so that she could touch
the stars like torches.
Privately, we recorded her,
Intimately, yes! We courted her with--
"Miss Cinnamon Tea, please rest your itty bitty palms in my--
Incandescently glowing hands and infinitely,
We will explore your inquisitive tendencies;
The intrinsic and the explicit,
We won't inhibit any of your inquiry,
But first the fire must be met then quenched by you candidly and randomly
venting any
Thoughts, memories, anything!
It's time for you to start channeling what you've been gathering!"
So we left gravity,
Instantly engulfing Lorraine in a shimmering cavity then,
Flattening like an elasticine band that stretches and contorts,
And then I'd widen like the space highway spiraling sideways, contract
and dilate,
Then straighten up at 100 mph then fall on myself in layers like a
thickened band of taffy,
Assuming every length and shape imaginable,
Then I catapulted Lorraine and her stuffed animal into still deeper space,
But fathoming what I had actually done and her pace increasing rapidly,
I shot out like a javelin after her screams,
First matching her speed, then surpassing her, hearing her laughter as I
passed her,
But the web I spun had not strengthened yet,
And the momentum sent them stretching through my intentions, And I popped!
Dolly lost. . . . . . .
And Lorraine. . . . . ..
Plopped back down into her bedroom,
And coughed

What? There is SO much independent shit on the way --the Arsonists have a new 12" coming out, and
countless other shit is coming out on the underground level. I will say this until I run out of air...US as
participants in Hip-Hop culture need to start SEEKING OUT music and not waiting for your local
