hiphop for a hypothetical grand hiphop database type thing...

What would you add to these? (no regional or date based please)

Trip-hop
Electro
Gangsta (that spelling I'm afraid)
Conscious
Bass Music
Go-Go
Thug Rap
Cut-up/DJ
R&B/Swing
Ragga
Pop Rap

Its interesting that you include Ragga as a form of Hip Hop. Wasnt Ragga
spurned by King Jammy ?

Jazz rap, in the mold of Dream Warriors, Us3 etc. Yes, it's cheesy; yes, it
exists.

Is that the word we use? "Jazz Rap"? Does that include Gang* and the

Yeah good point although they are still rhyming over hip hop beats and have
Jamaican accents. Sean Paul was a Dancehall artist, now it seems he'll do
anything for coin !

DJ Jubilee is the epitome of what Bounce is. Also Ricky B, T Tucker & DJ
Irv, pre Cash Money Juvenile, and pre No Limit Soulja Slim (he was known as
Magnolia Slim) are some other examples I can think of off the top of the
head.. It's pretty big in the south, particularly new orleans.

The lines are really blurred in reggae/dancehall with the crossover
success of Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder and Elephant Man. Plus u had past
hits from Shabba Ranks, Buju Banton, Mad Cobra and Super Cat. Plus there
are hip hop MCs who incorporate Patois...Jamaican language...and/or
Rastafarian culture into their songs like KRS One, Born Jamericans, Boot
Camp, and Wyclef. Alot of ppl debate whether Dancehall is a form of
reggae, a form of hip hop of a music all by itself. But it is
historically proven that reggae music helped push hip hop music ahead
when Kool Herc came over from Jamaica and introduced mixing and
toasting/MCn to the music scene in NY. First Sound System was back i
think in 1962 by C.S Dodd, the brains behind Studio One. A sound system
consists of a basically a selecta and an MC. To hip hop that would be a
DJ and MC. Dancehall music is believed to have started in the mid 70s
but it is debatable just like when hip hop was started. Dancehall
infiltrated the US in the early 90s with Shabba Ranks and Super Cat
leading the way. Sean Paul once said that Dancehall and Hip Hop are
cousins and thats why the artists jump from genre to genre alot. To help
some of yall out ill list what most traditionalists describe reggae and
hip hop as.....
Reggae
Dancehall(Sean Paul, Elephant, Capleton)
Ska(Skalites, Derrick Morgan..ect)
Roots & Cultjah(Sizzla, Anthony B, Jah Mason)
Lovers Rock(Beres Hammond,Sanchez..)

Hip Hop
NY/East(Nas, Jigga,Clipse,Def Squad)
Dirty/Down South(Outkast,Lil Jon,Ludacris)
West Coast(E-40,West.Connection..)
Midwest(Nelly, BTNH,Tech9ne..)
Down South Booty(2 live crew, 69 boyz)
Undaground(Atmosphere,Slum Village..)

...........Thats all i can think of for now.

the whole thing is invalid if you dont have a screw section... including
anyone who came out of the screw scene

ie: paul wall and chammillionaire shit regular speed... it gets classified
in the screw section, but you have in the title whether its a screwed
version or not, cuz most come out both ways...

You could lump "gangsta" with thug if that was the case.

Mob is simply for ridin' your car to, not necessarily always thugged out....

why not? i think such descriptions make at least as much sense as those you
listed.

or you just don't want the _name_ of the style to have a region or date in it?

some of those refer to lyrical style, some to musical style...where would you
put some thugged out go-go cat?

They are styles which can be applied to a release. So they appear under
the banner of Genre: Hiphop and then have Styles: Go-go, Thug Rap, etc

They can have 3 styles. Anyway I dont even care about this style shit,
its not gonna mean anything to anyone.

It's the hiphop wing of discogs.com which is like a musical IMDB. THe
hiphop bit will be opening soon and were just trying to get them to
make it serve our needs.
