Wu-Tang Clan Fires Manager After Village Voice Expose Mob-linked manager
canned after Wu-Tang Clan reads story in Voice

The Clan can a rat.

In the wake of a current Village Voice cover story that exposes one of
the Wu-Tang Clan's handlers to be a government informant, the group is
taking steps to distance itself from the scandal.

Michael Caruso (a.k.a. Lord Michael) made a name for himself in the
early Nineties as a promoter in New York's burgeoning techno scene, when
he used to hold Ecstasy-laden events at the Limelight. His reputation
quickly soured, however, when he added drug trafficking, extortion, home
invasions, bank robbery and kidnapping attempts to his resume. After
confessing to these and other crimes, Caruso escaped a prison sentence
by turning state's evidence against Limelight club kingpin Peter Gatien
(who was eventually acquitted). The Voice reports that Caruso is
currently a cooperating witness against a former business partner with
mob ties, current Miami club king Chris Paciello, who is awaiting trial
in September.

Beyond working for the government in exchange for leniency, Caruso
started a new career as a personal manager for Wu-Tang rapper
Cappadonna. Though Caruso had revealed to the Clan elements of his
criminal past, he apparently neglected to tell the band of his
cooperation agreement with the federal government. When Voice reporter
Frank Owen tried to get the band to comment on Caruso's snitch status
for his story, he says, they refused to believe it. "I sent them
documents, this thirty-page fax with all these legal documents and Voice
articles, conclusive proof, and they just thought I was making it up,"
Owen says. "Maybe they just didn't read it."

Whether or not Caruso is a government informant becomes especially
sticky for the Wu-Tang Clan for a number of reasons. First of all,
Caruso's cooperation agreement specifically prohibits him from traveling
out of the state of New York, yet he just returned from a
twenty-five-date national tour with the band. The cooperation agreement
also forbids Caruso from carrying a handgun, yet the Voice describes an
incident on the Ghostface Killah/Cappadonna tour in Washington, D.C.,
where an armed Caruso threatened promoters in order to procure a larger
vehicle for the artists. And finally, Caruso's cooperation agreement
doesn't permit him to associate with known criminals, which excludes
many of the Clan due to their felony records.

The Wu-Tang Clan and its associates, the Voice also reported, is
currently under investigation for gunrunning. Whether Caruso is involved
in that specific investigation could not be confirmed. The more
realistic scenario, Owen says, is that the federal government is aware
of Caruso's breach of his cooperation agreement and is simply looking
the other way. "He's just wandering around like nothing happened," Owen
says. "He's not in jail. His sentencing keeps getting pushed back. And
he's out club-hopping with the Wu-Tang Clan. He's supposed to go on tour
with them in Europe."

Not now. As a result of the revelations from the Voice article, Caruso
reportedly has been fired from his position as personal manager to
Cappadonna, though a spokesperson for the band would only say "they are
distancing themselves from Caruso." An official statement from the band
is expected Friday.
Additionally, the band is also distancing themselves from Cappadonna,
now claiming, as Raekwon said Wednesday night when he phoned into a show
on New York station Hot 97, that Cappadonna was never in the band to
begin with -- this, despite his appearance with Raekwon, along with
Ghostface Killah and Inspectah Deck, onstage at RZA's show Sunday night
at the House of Blues in Los Angeles.

I'm confused. Wasn't Cappadonna one of the original nine? If not, who are
the original nine?

Now we can all rejoice - the Wu got rid of that sheisty motherfucker,
and Cappadonna may still be part of the Wu family, but Rae has decreed
that no matter how much Wu-Wear he rocks or how many shoutouts he gives
to RZA and Ghost, he will never be part of the main Clan. There's
others in the extended Wu fam that are far more worthy of the
spotlight, but Cappa's been given the most guest appearances on Clan
tracks, a chance to blow up like two years ago with an album sporting
premier RZA production, and so on. U-God's wack, but at least he knows
his place, whereas whenever Cappa gets to rap he's like "Cappa ruffles
the bubblegoose feathers, throwing sharp darts that hit the nemesis
spine, Donna moves Wu-Tang Clan up another notch", blah blah blah.

Say, where's that Masta Killa album? He's good sometimes (I liked his
part on "Da Mystery of Chessboxin", but too often he falls prey to the
talking-when-you're-really-supposed-to-be-rapping syndrome.

if anyone actually listened to cappa's raps you would know he's not a
member of the clan. the mtv interview on mtv.com w/ wu features
cappa. they say there will be legal action against the voice most
likely.
