As usual its quite a ridiculous list. Exactly what did Common and Pharoah Monch
even do last year at all, let alone to warrant top 10 positions?

Here's where my top 5 emcees rank...

Jay-z 6
Nas 10
Em 11 (iffy if hes in my top 5 since he did nothing of note in 2k2)
Ghost 18
mega - unranked
ludacris - unranked.

Fuck, there's maybe a dozen guys on the list who'd even make my list. I mean
if we're gonna jock the shit out of abstract stuff, where's pep love? He
dropped an album light years better than krs and is flat out doper than many of
the artists on the list.

Damn. This was even more annoying than the usual commercial artist list.

Haven't even heard the names of a lot of these.. hip-hop infinity are
apparently backpacking muthaf:ers.

Before even clicking the link, I'll guarantee I know about 15 of the
MC's on there. They're easily the most elitist motherfuckers in the
world. Horrible horrible horrible. I remember being curious about some
of the guys on there last year, checking them out, and wanting to punch
hiphopinfinity in the mouth.

Today, 8 Feb 2002, Gavin-X ran the dern jibber-jabber

Not good. Sage Francis too high, Slug too low... lots of other bad
stuff... Common at 5 is a damn joke.

I know I couldn't rank 50 MCs if I tried. I know who I like, who tends
to move me the most, but anything more than a list of my personal 10
wouldn't be meaningful.

Why not just put up a list of "50 MCs we think are dope, and the folks
in this group are doper than most".

I couldn't understand why other MC's were dropped for not doing much
this year, while they admit Sage didn't do much, and had him move up.

Ugh.

I've never understood why Pharoahe Monch has always gotten so much praise --"born
with a silver mic in his hand" or whatever the hyperbole has been. He's mad
overrated. I mean, I haven't studied the guy's catalog of work because I just don't
find him that compelling or talented. He's got complex lyrics I guess, but he's
also got a bad voice, annoying inflections (that people seem to interpret as dope),
mediocre flow, no personality really. And what are his signature tracks? 'Simon
Says'? 'Stress' or whatever that album was called had some nice cuts, but come on,
the only place this is classic material is in the imaginations of over eager,
go-out-on-a-limb historians and underground jockers. I'd like to re-evaluate
Equinox, but I can't forget those disappointing memories I had after 1.5 listens
back when it dropped (9 times 8 or something was the only decent cut).

peace.

What is wrong with everybody? The same thing happens here every time HHI
puts out a list. It's HIP HOP INFINITY's top 50, in other words, the people
who run the site make a list of their 50 favourite artists. It's in their
opinion, and it is posted on their site because the people who go to that
site are actually interested in their opinion. Do you think Jay Seagraves is
gonna be like "Euhhh, Sage Francis isn't even on TJ Xenos' top 5!".. and
they're elitist because MF hasn't heard of most of the people on the list?
And yet he/you are the one who wants to "punch them in the mouth"? Gimme a
break. Why does it piss everyone off that there are people who have entirely
different tastes than you? I don't think that list was aimed at the RMHH
crowd..

Yeah, but one could suspect that the people who write this believe
themselves to be very cool for listening to [ridicilously] underground
artists...

And to make a fair comment: I totaly disagree with their list. The artists
on the top 10 are in my opinion not the greatest MC's of last year, and just
like Fthenos I looked up some of the ones I hadn't heard of... and now I
want to punch somebody in the mouth!

The list is biased---they have garbage ass Jigga-boo in the top 10. On
what planet?! And they shower praises on Del and no Pep Love? C'mon. As
one respondent astutely mentioned, it's their site and their list. It's
all debateable and solely opinionated. I find it a valuable learning
tool though. I consider myself a Hip Hopper(not an elitist) and many of
the artists listed there I've never heard any of their work in this neck
of woods(the Illadelph) and a few I've never even heard of period. One
of which, is this kid named Sage Francis. Sole, I heard snippets of
"Bottles of Humans" over at Amazon.com and he's sorry. But at least I
have "heard" of them and that's what I'm about. Even if I don't like
them as artists, I'd still like to be abreast of as many artists as I
can. If it's not on the radio and you mention Juice, Moka Only, Sonya
Blade or a Mykill Miers to some heads, they say, "huh, who dat?". Even
though some of their choices could be suspect, I see their list overall
as a good tool in helping me expand my knowledge of artists that we
don't hear of over here.
PEACE!

wow...

i was just listening to this album again the other night, and it blows my mind
how dope pharoah was. and how dope the production was. 1994 was the shit.

sorry i don't have the time for any more detail right now, but no other mcs can
do some of the shit pharoah has done

heard of until now.

besides the fact that this (shitty ass) list is just a couple of
dudes' OPINIONS (and should really be called "favorite emcees of 4
arbitrary niggas who are prolly newjack ass herbs anyway"), i don't
necessarily see the relevance of doing a "greatest/best mc" list every
year. it's like when you talk about great nba players, you don't just
take the 25 guys who made the all star team and say they're the
"greatest" players, you take it back to magic, bird, mj, doc, wilt,
russell, etc. i basically have a list of "hall of fame" type emcees
that i feel are the best.

rakim
kane
g rap
ricky d
cool j

krs
chuck d
cube

nas
pac
big
jay

redman
eminem
pun
common
andre
ghost

that's it. i don't update it every year, or every time i hear a new
song, new verse, etc. i don't rank them, i just know who's the best to
me.

niggas need to understand the difference between "my favorite" and
"the best"
i'd rather hear styles p barkin on niggas or mega talkin about
cocaine, nikes and lexuses than 90% of the chumps on that list, that
don't mean i think they're the best.

Really? I don't see it, but it's been years since I've listened to that Stress
album. Maybe I'll have to go back and pay more attention to what he' saying.

peace.
