It's Rahzel (who according to what I've read here is the beatboxer for
the Roots) beatboxing Art of Noise's "Moments in Love"

i know not of what you speak.

do you know the art of noise song "moments in love"? this minimalist
r&b joint (for lack of a better description -- where's tauri when you
need him) from the early 80s.

rahzel replicates the beat with his mouth.

so yeah, it may be what you're talkin about, but i'm oblivious to
whatever mobile phone clips might be circulating.

No, I realised what it actually was after I posted the message. But
the mobile phone thing is a minute or so video of Rahzel making dope
sound effects (I think it was for a commercial).

really, he left?

do they still have scratch? i just saw them last month, and neither one
was there, but even when rahzel was definitely still with them, i never
saw him at roots shows (and i've seen the roots a bunch of different times).

was that guy ben kenny or whatever only with them for phrenology? seems
like they have a new guitarist now (or at least, they did at the show i
just went to).

i don't know if i ever posted about it here, but i guess dave chappelle
had a show in oakland earlier the same night i saw the roots in SF, and
he came out and played a song with them... didn't say anything, just
walked out smoking a cigarette, played the keys for a song, walked off,
everyone went nuts. pretty dope.

Rahzel left a while ago. He wanted to do the solo thing and then had
some not so nice words about the group. Apparently after not
succeeding on the solo tip, he made nice with the crew (or at least
kinda nice) and now occassionally, they'll do a show together.

Scratch left, also. His official reason was he had to leave for
"personal reasons." There's not-so-good blood there also. Because
apparently he didn't tell the crew until after he left that he was
leaving. ?love either heard it from someone else or read it in an
article. I don't remember all the details but I do remember him not
being very happy about it (at least when he posted on the sight).
However, I think they've also kinda buried the hatchet only because not
to long ago, they all did a show together. One show.

Yeah, Ben Kenney was just there for Phrenology. Now he plays with
Incubus. No bad blood between him and the Roots. Mutual respect.

They're cool. ?love would spin for a few episodes of Chappelle's Show
when it was on and he was the music supervisor. The Roots were also
very instrumental in getting the Chappelle Block Party/Birthday Bash or
whatever thing going a year or so ago. That's when the Fugees
Reunited, Com and Erykah did Love of My Life with no beef. It was a
big ol' love fest according to Okayplayer.com.

huh... that's crazy. and then there's malik b too, so i guess there are
a bunch of ex-roots members on not the best terms with the current members.

for what it's worth though, i think "water" is black thought's best
track in terms of lyrics and delivery. and it's up there for me in
terms of the beat too, even if i do usually skip the spacey sound
collage part at the end of the track on the album. so at least one good
came out of all that.

so what'd rahzel and scratch have problems over?

yeah, i remember seeing ? on chappelle's show. they did that one skit
w/ john mayer, getting different ethnic groups to dance, which was
hilarious (even moreso because it had the guy that did the robot with
his eyes rolled back in his head, which never failed to crack me up).

I don't know about Scratch. He really didn't say much on or after his
departure. I can't remember all the things Rahzel said but from other
people's post on okaypayer at the time, it seemed like he thought he
was a bigger star than he was. That's why he did that solo lp. He
really thought he could swing it as a solo MC/producer/beatboxer.

I loved that skit too and Karl the Robot is hilarious.
