I notice a lot of people were offended that the media classified Biggie as
a gangsta rapper. I've been thinking Biggie was a gangsta rapper since I
bought "Ready to Die" the day it dropped. I mean, what does he talk about?
Guns and bitches. What is most gangsta rap about? Guns and bitches. It's
not like Biggie was an abstract emcee or anything. Obviously he was closer
to Tupac than Organized Konfusion. And Tupac at least had non-shoot-em-up,
non-sex songs like "Words of Wisdom" and "Life Goes On" and et cetera, et
cetera. Biggie was more of a gangsta rapper than Pac was to me because
Biggie ALWAYS talked about either shooting/killing someone or selling
drugs (or sexing honeys). I challenge someone to find a song where Biggie
was not talking about one of the above three things. "Suicidal Thoughts"
doesn't count, btw, because he was talking about killing himself.

I don't consider Biggie gangsta rap because he didn't talk about gangs,
and wasn't a gang member. I think of it as "thug rap" or "hustler rap" for
lack of a better definition. While the subject matter is similar, without
the gang stuff, it's not gangsta rap.

With all due respect, Mike, that's hogwash. Spice 1 doesn't talk about
gangs at all and prodly refers to himself as a gangsta rapper. The
definition has evolved.
