Pronounce iconic places in Boston correctly. It's "Fan'l". In fact, you'd like this jazz related story. When I was cab driving in 1986 I picked up Allan Holdsworth and his whole band right in front of
Fan'l Hall. It was about midnight on a Tuesday. They wanted to know where the action was. Any fool knows there ain't no action after 8pm in Boston, unless you want to hit the Combat Zone. But,
figuring that wouldn't really be their speed, I took them to Hahvahd Squayah. Chad Wackerman was in the front seat up with me and kept bugging me about where to get the chicks at. Finally dropped them
off in front of the Wursthaus in the Squayah. Allan was a very gracious guy. So, I didn't think about it much for quite some time. Then, perhaps in 2002 or 03, I was hanging with Bill Kopper (crazy,
crazy good guitar player) and told him that story. He laughed because that night was his first night as a waiter at the Wursthaus and Allan and his band came in and sat in his section! He waited on
them without problems, but the rest of the night was so screwed up that it was the end of his waiting career. Weird coincidence.

It really was a bizarre day last Friday. At my company, our hardass
COO refused to close the company, despite the fact that the public
transit system (which 2/3 of the staff takes to work) was closed, and
multiple communities where our staff live were on lockdown and
citizens were prohibited from leaving their house.

So since I have one of the 6 parking spots at the company, I showed up
at work just in time to be informed by the landlord that the city had
instructed them to close the building, and Boston had been added to
the list of cities on lockdown. So I went inside, called our COO, who
agreed it might actually be a good idea to close the company. So we
sent out the email, and the 2 other staff members who had shown up
left.

Now, our company is located in an old Arsenal in the Seaport District,
sandwiched between a drydock on one side and the container port on the
other. The regional central offices of US Customs Intelligence and
Homeland Security are in the building across the street. Once Boston
went on lockdown, Homeland Security was everywhere. I really thought
they were going to tell me to get out of my car and go inside. But
thankfully, they waved me through and I was allowed to drive home. My
wife, who usually takes the subway, had contemplated driving in with
me and walking the mile to work, but thankfully I dissuaded her. It
would not have been easy to get her once the city locked down.

The whole lock down thing was so fucking weird. Boston was on
lockdown, but the suburb immediately to the south of my Boston
community of Roslindale is a suburb called Dedham. Roslindale was on
lockdown, but Dedham wasn't. At about 2 PM, my wife and I got hungry
for lunch, and decided to hop in our car and snuck across the border
from Boston to Dedham. (It's about a one mile drive to hit the
border.) It was like leaving a war zone and re-entering normalcy.
Almost no one was on the streets in Boston. Folks really took the
lock down seriously. But in Dedham, the Legacy Place Mall was
mobbed. I had trouble finding a parking spot. We had lunch at the
Yard House, a chain brewpub with 120 beers on tap. It was also
mobbed, but thankfully we didn't quite have to wait for a table. Then
we went shopping at Whole Foods in the mall, and headed back to Lock
Down Land. It was like leaving civilization and re-entering a war
zone, in mentality. Truly surreal. We kind of felt like criminals
driving out of Rozzie to Dedham. True strangeness.

Peace,
Neil X.

Dedham man arrested in statewide child pornography crackdown

By Dave Eisenstadter
Wicked Local Dedham
Posted Apr 10, 2012 @ 05:02 PM

DEDHAM —

A Dedham man was among the 32 arrested in a weeklong, statewide sweep
of child pornography suspects, according to a Massachusetts State
Police statement released Tuesday, April 10.

Raymond O’Hara, 56, was charged with possession of child pornography
and dissemination of child pornography.

Arrested at his home on Beech Street on Tuesday, April 3, and
arraigned the same day at the Dedham District Court, O’Hara’s bail was
set at $2,500 and he was ordered to have no contact with children or
use of computers, according to Norfolk County District Attorney Press
Officer David Traub.

His bail was later reduced to $500 at Dedham Superior Court with the
condition he check in daily by phone with the probation department,
according to Traub.

O’Hara has a court date of May 3 for a probable cause hearing.

Colonel Marian McGovern, superintendent of the state police, was among
the officials that announced the arrests at State Police General
Headquarters on Tuesday.

“Our work is not done,” she said, according to the release. “It will
never be done as long as even one child suffers the horrible trauma of
sexual exploitation. But let this work you see before you serve as a
stern message to those who prey on these children and support the evil
trade that exploits them – we will never stop coming after you, day
after day after day.”

Federal and local police departments participated in the surveillance
and arrests, according to the release.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said improvements to
ways law enforcement uses technology were important in performing
these arrests, according to the statement.

“The collaboration during this operation shows the joint commitment
all of these agencies have to protecting children from exploitation
and we will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to
aggressively enforce our child pornography laws,” she said.

Other arrests were made in Amesbury, Arlington, Belchertown, Brockton,
East Boston, Granby, Haverhill, Hyde Park, Lowell, Marblehead,
Middleboro, Milford, Natick, New Bedford, North Attleboro, Oak Bluffs,
Oxford, Revere, Scituate, Seekonk, Somerset, South Harwich,
Stockbridge, Taunton and Worcester. Charges ranged from possession and
dissemination of child pornography to rape of a child, according to
the statement.

Investigative leads were coordinated by the Massachusetts Internet
Crimes Against Children Task Force and were executed by state police
detectives.

Holy shit! That's a sex offense now too! Good thing I didn't get caught back in the day. Though in my case it was more "leering" than "skulking" and more "praying" than "preying". To those 19-20something girls in the tie-died mini-skirts that were dancing right in front of me in the third row at Shoreline 9/30/88, I apologize for the thoughts that were going through my head, I didn't know it was so wrong.

That is so far beyond fucked up that it isn't even within hailing
distance. I "knew" Ray online for years before he ever appeared on
RMGD. He was a regular (highly annoying) poster on the Patriots
usenet group for eons before he ever popped up here. He really wasn't
stupid, he was usually factually accurate in what he posted, by his
own (highly unorthodox) definitions. Really poor communication skills
though. Couldn't express himself coherently.

What a total worthless putz of a human being.

Man, Ray O'Hara a sex offender, Mark Alan Newbury dead, and Mark
Williams in indefinite detainment at Gitmo. What a thing this usenet
is.

This is actually true.

(Unlike GrtflMark being detained at Gitmo---HELLO!!).

And I found out about it because the (young, gorgeous) new girlfriend
of one of the regular attendees at our (20+) year running Oktoberfest
party last year spontaneously dropped the fact that she knew that I
was a regular poster to RMGD because her uncle was Mark Alan Newbury,
and he had died in early 2012, and they found all his online
correspondence after he died. (I burned several dozen disks for him
over the years, so we had email communications about that. Apparently
he never deleted email.) When she said that, you coulda knocked me

Yes, and other (apparently non-fast food) restaurants like Chipotle
Mexican Grill and Five Guys Burgers.

But he did actually educate me about the gerography of the fast food
strip on VFW Parkway, which I do believe 90+% of Bostoners believe is
in Dedham, but it is not, it's part of West Roxbury, a neighborhood in
Boston. The McDonalds at the south end of that strip abuts the Dedham
town line. The Burger King, Arbys, etc. on that stretch are actually
all in Boston.

$2000 does not seem a nigh enough bail.

My biggest surprise is how unsurprised I am. Aside from, you know, being completely surprised. Yeah, he always came across as, more than anything else, supremely stupid... But then again, I feel that way about most of you (hehehe... I kid, I kid...)..

But really, aside from the fact that there was little that dude wrote that ever approached even barely sentient (apparently, as Neil notes, he had a functional knowledge of Boston-area geography - big whoop), there was always just this extra layer of sleeze emanating off of everything the dude ever wrote. Or something. I dunno, the dude just never seemed even remotely "right" to me...

Yeah, but he loses it all if he skips town!

Yeah, not very good courtroom behavior, but I'm not a lawyer yet, so I can fool around for a while.

On a more serious note, I wonder if anyone actually tried to argue for bail.

From the transcript. As we enter, The Court is noting that the
defendant was asked if he could afford an attorney....

THE COURT: Let the record reflect that I believe the defendant has said,
No.
I have provisionally appointed the federal defender, Mr. Fick, to
represent you in this matter. At some time he will give you a financial
affidavit to fill out. The information you put in the affidavit
regarding your financial assets will assist me in determining whether or
not you are eligible for the appointment of counsel. I remind you that
the affidavit is filed under the pains and penalties of perjury, which
means that if the information you put in the affidavit is false, you
could be prosecuted for perjury and, if convicted, be subject to a fine
of up to $250,000 and/or five years in jail.
In addition, if there is any change in your financial status, you have
an obligation to inform the Court.
Ordinarily, I would be asking the bail question.

MR. FICK: I am going to defer that question at this time, your Honor,
and agree to voluntary detention without prejudice.
