Charlie Daniels suffered a mild stroke on Friday (Jan. 15) while
snowmobiling during a vacation in Colorado. Daniels was treated at a
medical center in Durango, Colo., after the stroke and was then
airlifted to a Denver hospital, where he was released on Sunday (Jan.
17). He is recovering at his home in Colorado, where he has been on
vacation since Dec. 27. No concert dates are expected to be canceled,
according to his publicist

Allie Kral. Hell of a fiddler. Waaaay better looking than any of the
dudes mentioned in this thread. And I am blissfully unaware of her
politics. I saw Cornmeal open for Railroad Earth a few months back.
Before the show I was making fun of the "Cornmeal" name. After I saw
them play I was contrite. Play like that and you can call your band
whatever you want.

Allie Kral is really good - I'm a fan - but she's not in the same
league as Darol Anger or Mark O'Conner. No knock on Allie though - few
are that league.
Another very good fiddle player - in Allie's league if not IMO better
- is Drew Emmitt of Leftover Salmon. And that's not even Drew's
primary instrument, which is the mandolin.
Then there's Alison Krauss - she's primarily known for her
ridiculously beautiful voice but she's no slouch in the fiddle either.

knowledge on this stuff JC so I'm either overrating Vassar or
underrating Charlie, or both. Or you could be wrong. :-)
Actually I don't really know what I'm talking about here in that my
exposure to Charlie Daniels is minimal, only what I've heard on the
radio and that's been a long time ago. From what I know of his stuff
it isn't really my thing.

I'm not suggesting she is in the O'Conner tier of players. Just
throwin' names out there. It's kinda like him getting the CMA musician
of the year so many times they just hadda stop giving it to him. Let's
just call him fiddle player of the millennium and move on to
recognizing some other very talented players. I've seen Mark O. in at
least one situation where, excellent as he is, he just didn't fit,
namely his stint with the Dregs. Speaking of the Dregs, Allen Sloan

I'm not saying Vassar is chopless, and I prefer that kind of music
anyway, but I've heard Charlie pull of much quicker runs, with a
greater variety of tones. It's been a while since I've listened to
both, so I may have to take another listen.

I'm talking way before Devil Went Down to Georgia. I like his early
stuff, and some of it is derivative of the Allmans, but Charlie proves
that he is an incredibly talented musician. His voice never did all
that much for me, so it's not like I'm a big fan. But his
musicianship is at a high level, and his politics have nothing to do
with it.

Charlie Daniels had his first big hit in 1975. (Devil 85?) He was a
fresh addition to the ABB and Marshall Tucker at the time. Lasted
about one album for most. He was probably more aligned with Marshall
Tucker than ABB, His Long haired Country Boy with the pot reference
was somewhat of a hit on his first album. He was also a supporter of
Jimmie Carter,not sure why he went so nutty. But then Lynard Skynard
did as well. . The first 5 Marshall Tucker Band albums have Charlie
Daniels on fiddle,and his live work on their Where We All belong is
spectacular(as is Toy Caldwell)
But yeah, Vassar Clements work is far more listenable.
I think the only CD I own is on Marshall Tucker Band albums. If you
have never heard the live 24 Hours At A Time from Where We All Belong
you might want to.
Here is one from Volunteer jam, I believe Charlie Daniels had
something to do with them.

Santa Cruz in the fall of 1980. Spectacular show. One of the top 10 I've

I saw them a few years later with O'Connor and it seemed like he was
constantly challenging Steve Morse to a duel. All the chemistry was
dissipated with the competitiveness. The following year, the Dregs came
by to the Paradise in Boston with no fiddle player and were simply on
fire. They had no fiddle, no record deal, no business plan, no future
and played like there was no tomorrow. Easily as good as the first show
I saw.
A few years later I saw the band that was Paul Barrere with the Dregs
rhythm section and that smoked as well. I liked that better than the
Little Feat shows I saw a few years after that.
Mark is pretty talented though. I saw him with Bela Fleck and Edgar
Meyer and that was stunning.
