9/25/76, aka DP20

I've had this bad boy for some time (10 years? More? Who knows) and I'm sure I've listened to these a couple/few times. But tonight, while working in the yard and grilling, I've been blasting this for the whole neighborhood to hear.

And they better be impressed because this is not only very well performed, but this is a dream set list. First set of this thing is off the hook with a contender for best Peggy-o ever (and I thought I had weighed all those contenders).

And th great thing about this Pick is that I've still got discs three and four (aka 9/28/76) to take me through sunset and into the evening. An that thing promises a mighty fine set list as well.

I been getting into 76 recently, I only cuz that may be the one year in the GD wheelhouse I never really got into.

The grill is ready for the brats, I've got a Dogfish Hellhound on my Ale poured. Life is good.

And yet '76 has taken so much grief from those who claim the Dead were
too laid back or played too slow or some such b.s. '76 is really just
unprocessed and unrefined '77....and that's a good thing. Ain't
nuthin' like a down and dirty '76 H > S > F....or stuff like Wharf Rat

In no way do I prefer 76 over 77, although it is an underrated year... While on certain occasions, 76 may hit the heights that 77 hit, the consistency just ain't there.. This 9/25 show blew my mind tonight, that July Orpheum run has some great moments and I even spent some time enjoying the hell out of a June '76 show recently, but there are definitely times when 76 was too mellow or too unrefined...

But the fact of the matter is that these guys were learning new songs and even the old stuff that they were playing they were learning how to play with two drummers and learning how to put a new stamp on it... At times, this was a good thing with successful exploration and inventiveness going on; at other times the shit missed its mark...

But, given that I more or less think I have the basics of just about every other year from 69 to 79 nailed down, the last mostly unexplored year of the best of the Dead looks like a fun thing to dig into over the course of the summer.

Anybody else got some 76 suggestions for me? Has there ever been a halfway decent recording of 6/28 released?

Well, I'm not anybody else, but the Cobo show on 10/3 has an over the
top 2nd set. Other than that, just about all the June shows are well
worth listening to. As far as 6/28, the archive has a Miller remaster
up, so I assume it sounds good though I haven't heard it yet.

Imma have to check this out.. I once had a copy of this show that was littered with fuzz. See how well Mr. Lemiuex et al cleaned this thing up.

I get the occasional intense craving for something from 76, but after
a show or two it wears off. It's a year whose performances don't have
much staying power, imo. All those wacky combinations are really a
mile wide and an inch deep.
