I love the Dead but the shit that Mickey Hart does sucks. I saw him at
the further on Montage mountain and he blew. It was a 60 min drums
Highlighted w/ Jorma butchering Jerry's guitar licks and Mickey Rapping
(yes Rapping) Fire On The Mountain. If I had a rock I would have thrown
it at him.

So for all of you "Dead Heads" who are coming down on the Black Crowes
and Bobby when he does Jerry's tunes stop and thank the gods that they
arn't Rapping Fire on the mountain.

Before you start ripping on the rap- get your facts strait. I believe
(and others should make sure I right), that the original tune was rapped
and I have a very early tape to prove it. I'm sorry you didn't like it.

Yeah it's more or less the same rap he did back in 1969.
If you don't like some of the music, it's a good time to make a run
for the bathroom. I happened to think that Mickey was the highlight
of Further '96 and he's the main reason I'm traveling with three
friends to catch the Fest this year.

I have been at concerts where rocks, beer bottles, lit cigarettes etc
brought a show to a stop. Frankly it wasn't fun. Even if I don't
like a band, I try to respect the people there who might. I was at a
Rush show where Geddy Lee took a beer bottle in the head. Fortunately
he was able to come back and finish the show.

Making threats, no matter how far fetch you think they are, may be a
very bad idea. If you want to express you opinion, good or bad, speak
up. But perhaps threats of physical harm are a bit out of line.

So, have you always been such an erudite critic, or did you have

Whilst I'm thanking the gods, I shall remember that old Family

Actually either one of the two would be a start.

I'm with you Larry. The idea of throwing something at someone is a bit
off from the conciousness they are trying to generate at further
festivals!! I also happen to think Planet Drum was great. I danced my
head off and had a big grin on my face!! FOTM started out as a rap way
back whan, and although I would give anything to hear it done once more
by the Dead, it is O.K. with me iof Mickey feels like doing it. I enjoy
watching the boys have a good time.

MICKEY FOR EVER.

that's what I say. there were so many shows when the band was fucking
listless and who was it that carried the I-RIE vibe? Micky Hart was the
magician for the band; totally perceptive duos with Jerry.
so what if he has a big ego? He who is without sin, cast the first....
whoop, wait a minute. You already had that impulse. deek.

Please cite one "totally perceptive duo with Jerry."

(Not that I'm slamming Hart, I just think you're being -far- too generous

Well, obviously I'm no scholar, but the Frost shows stand out for me.
Inside the 4/30/88 Black Peter, for instance. That is one example of
the playful and rich communication which Jerry and Micky had a _lot_ of.
Come on, Jeff, am I making this up? How often did you see Jerry facing
Micky just trading licks and smiling? They had it going on.

One more thing about Hart: He didn't like to put up with Weir's shit,
and I respect that. I'll never forget the show in Oakland (again, no
scholar so no date) but the Dead was just searing, searing through
Playin/UJB/reprise/Morning Dew and the whole crowd was so poised for
something awesome from Bob and he strummed the Sugar Mag and Hart just
looked at him with disgust and then hung his head and wouldn't play. As
I recall only Billy played with Weir for the first 12 bars or so.. it was
such a disaster. Then Jerry and Phil and Brent joined in, but Hart
wouldn't play. Just sat there with his head hung, for the first few
minutes. That was his deadication to the fans, IMHO. He was aware of
the energy, and honored it.

He didn't play a beat until the song was

It is pretty sad after 35 dead shows the only Fire on the Mountain
I've ever been to was one where it was being rapped (the first one in
Atlanta last year). I must say it did suck - the background singers
were kinda cool, what will MC Mickey rap to next:

Walk - Me - Out - In - The - Morning - Dew - Ho...

Just to set you straight there, Bud, Mickey co-wrote FOTM. He can play
it any way he pleases. And Jorma doesn't play Jerry's guitar licks, he
plays Jorma's guitar licks. And he does it quite magnificently.

Go get yourself a copy of Diga Rhythm Band's album, and listen to
Happiness is Drumming. It might sound familiar, because it's a proto-Fire
on the Mountain, with Jerry sitting in on guitar. If you still aren't
gettin' it, then God help you.

what do you therefore desire from this forum? You appear to be
wallowing in your own pathetic misery.
Have you seen Planet Drum's version of FOTM this summer??? If so, do
you think that it sucked??? It seemed fairly rap-like to me and I
really appreciated it. What do you find so offensive about the rap
version?
sincerely,

I just thought Mickey was a shitty rapper and I didn't like the
version. At the show I was at I definitely wasn't the only one.
Let's see how many better rappers have I heard than Mickey:

Public Enemy
Run DMC
Beastie Boys
Too Short
NWA
Eazy-E
Dr. Dre
Kool Moe Dee
Wu Tang Klan
Sugar Hill Gang
Tupac
Puff Daddy
Notorious BIG
and on and on (I'll stop short of 2 Live Crew)

What I'm getting at here is that it wasn't good by my rap standards or
by the FOTMs I've heard it was the worst. So by those standards I was
dissapointed. I'm glad you liked it - if you like I'll find you a
tape of the Atlanta show I was at and you can send me all your
Scarlet/Fire's from when Jerry was singing it.

By the way "wallowing in your own pathetic misery" - give me a break
one comment is not wallowing in pathetic misery. I'm with Ned (whom
you quoted below) on this issue. So lighten up Francis.

Gee, I've never really thought Mickey's vocalizing could be termed "rap".
God, it never even occurred to me. I sort of likened his vocal style to
that of Lou Reed, or a couple of other folks who don't really sing, but
whose names escape me at the moment.
Sure, if you compare Mickey's stuff to the best rappers, it doesn't hold
up, but frankly I don't think he's rapping per se. To me, it appears to
be something a bit different.
My guess is that he chose the form of vocalizing he uses because he
figured we'd REALLY complain if we heard him sing.

On a different note, for all of us who seem to be unable to stomach any of
the Furthur acts which contain ex-members of the Dead, I propose this:
why don't we petition the Dead to continue the Furthur Festival, but
without any of the original bandmembers' involvement? Wouldn't that be
fun?

Hey now,
If is wasn't for Mickey you would never have FOTM, since Mickey did write
that song with Hunter. Also Mickey did that song rap style in the late
60's. One last thing Planet Drum this year blew away Mickey's disco come
back last year the Mystery Box. As for the Crowes, Its a good time to
check out Shakedown Street and take a whizz.

Go get some guns & roses tix, will ya. I'm pretty sure throwing rocks is
acceptable behavior *there* - NOT HERE BUDDY!!!
BTW, Mickey 1st recorded Fire on the Mountain back in '72 and if you
listen, he does, what you call *rap* (which sounds to me like a bigoted
remark) the song. Yes, the original version, on *Area Code 415* an
unreleased collection of tunes from what are known as Mickey's Barn
series, including *Barry Melton* and *Fire on the Mountain* which, yes,
also includes one of the earlier versions of Mickey performing what
apparently is one of his favorite tunes (see *Happiness is Drumming* on

Do people make music to be criticizied?
Do people make movies to be criticized?
Do people act/sing in plays to be criticized?
Do people have art gallery exchibitions to be criticized?

At least the person didn't want to through a rock at Mickey (like
someone else did). I for one think anyone can be a critic, its up to
you whether to listen. How would you find out about anything without

You know, I'm pretty disappointed in this whole conversation.

As a newbie, I must wonder, was anybody talking about this while the band
was still performing?

Becuase, in my humble experience of 125 shows, I ALWAYS watched Mickey
closely. He is a damn magician. Mickey's energy carried the band so
often... while Weir drifted into boredom and Jerry backed up confused,
Mickey Hart smiled and rocked. How many times did you observe Hart flip
that right hand out of nowhere, or pull snare rolls into the bottom of
the music?

On a side note, and while we're at it, there is a band called I think the
Allman Bros who had two drummers once..... (now three)
what is the consensus on jaimo and butch these days? I always always
love Butch Trucks, the Billy of the South. But when I compare, Billy and
Mickey fuckin' blow 'em away as far as surprise, entertainment, and
sensitivity go.

Opinions on this comparison?

we all have our personal favorites, and we all have members we like less

Ya know Mikey (life cereal) died 'cause he ate some pop rocks
and then drank pepsi.

I never heard of the Pepsi variation......besides, she's not supposed to
actually swallow the pop rocks.....well, not right off, anyways.

mickey brings nothing to the table. Space > drums is a waste of 30 minutes. I know all you GD stoners are too high on acid to recognize they stopped playing real music so jerry can run back stage to poke a vein and smoke an ENTIRE pack of ciggs (cause face it, he's got half an hour to waste).... but, just cause they do it every freaking show, doesn't make it good. I'd rather see Jerry do a solo acoustic banjo jam then mickey bore me to death while i wait in line to go to the bathroom. I love the grateful dead, don't get me wrong.. everything BUT mickey (and donna since you die hards are going to say she counts) is great

Both drummers could be a drag on the vibe, IMHO. Frankly Garcia deserved one really good drummer and one really good general percussionist. He got mid-level guys doing roughly the same thing. On their day it was great. But Hart always seemed surplus to requirements to me.
