living on reds, vitamni c and cocaine....

on the subject of sweet jane, something i always wondered. at the same time
the boyz were singing about sweet jane, the vevlvet underground, on the east
coast, (btw, the vu were also originally called the warlocks) started singing
about sweet jane. anybody know of any connection between the two.

VU fans, do you know the answer to Dan's question below?
i always thought the dead got the idea of sweet jane from VU & Lou.

I think by the time Truckin was produced the Velvet Underground was
disbanded. I think they disbanded in the late '60's, like 68.
American Beauty didn't come out till 1970 (I think). However I
remember reading somewhere that the lyrics to both albums, American
Beauty and Workingman's Dead were written before they both came out
(I'm sorry I don't know how to say that any other way.) They had the
material for both at the same time, and decided to put them in 2
different albums because of the difference in the music...and they
could make more money.

It's mindboggling to me to think of any connection between The Velvet
Underground and the Grateful Dead. They're at completely opposite
spectrums of countercultre. It seems almost as weird as that
counterpol thing.

(n.b. I am 100% oblivious to the Greatful Dead discography, so this
will be one-sided information)

"Sweet Jane" first appeared on vinyl on the Velvet Underground's
"Loaded" album, the release date for which I have down as September 1970.
From this it should be fairly easy to pin any coincidences. (I will believe
that Lou was simply too cool to have EVER borrowed a song idea from the Dead,
but I hold a lot of deranged and erroneous beliefs. :-) )--

In 1968, John Cale left the Velvet Underground (orginally Lou Reed,
John Cale, Sterling Morrison, Mo Tucker & Nico (on 1st LP)) but the rest
of the band continued on and released two other albums - "The Velvet
Underground" (1969) and "Loaded" (1970). As far as "Sweet Jane" is concer-
ned, this song was written by Reed back in '69 but not released until the
"Loaded" album, and later re-released on one of his solo LP (which one, I
can't remember). Whether or not this is the same Sweet Jane as that on
"Truckin'", or the Beatles' "Mary Jane" or Jane Fonda or Jane Mansfield, I
have no idea.
