I was at Darien Lake. I was wonderinhg why whenever Bruce Hornsby did
something he was booed by some in the crowd. He did a great show. It was
generally a good show but the crowd was too drunk by 10:00 and the
security was uptight and the place was a ripoff in terms of not leeting
you bring in food or drink and charging rediculous prices for them.

Sorry, b, but Robert Hunter beat ya to it. Oh, yeah, you actually post
lucid comments on the dylan newsgroup from what I hear, so you musta
forgotten where you were.

As for Bruce being booed at Darien Lake, a place I've never been to and a
show I didn't attend, I can only think that some people forgot to look at
their tickets before entering the show.

Must have been all the controversy about whether or not he could really
play lead piano after...what? Oh.

Maybe they were yelling "Brooooce!" like folks do at Springsteen shows. I
always thought this sounded like booing.

Just a thought...

I wasn't there but maybe they were yelling "Bruce" not "Boo." I know I have
mistaken Bruce for Boo in the past.

I know I'm being negative but I have also felt like since Jerry's death, GDM
has become more eager to sell stuff. It feels like I've been getting that
Almanac more frequently and man those Dick's Picks are starting to roll out
real fast. I'm not saying this is such a bad thing but they had all the time
in the world to put out those Dick's Picks but only after Jerry's death do
they seem to be really concentrating on it. I don't know maybe it's because
I've been in a bad mood lately. Why now do they sell a Phil shirt? Never
before have I seen an official Phil shirt. Also, what's with that god awful
Ratdog shirt in the newest Almanac. Man, who would buy that thing, let alone
wear it? Like I said maybe I'm just very sensitive about things like this and
I'm blowing it out of proportion? I don't know. I do own that beautiful
Sugaree shirt from GDM. Maybe I'm part of the problem. I keep buyin' the
stuff.

Bruce was NOT being booed at Darien Lake, what you were hearing was
BRUUUUUUUUCCEE!!!! It kinda sounds like Booooooo!!! The reason is
because of our beloved Buffalo Bill Bruce Smith, whenever he make's a play
at Rich Stadium during a game, the crowd reacts with BRUUUUUUUUUCCCEE!!!
It's become somewhat of a tradition for Buffalo Bill's Fan's. Bruce got
the same reaction when he played Melody Fair in Buffalo last summer. The
crowd is simply chanting his name.

I couldn't agree more. I mean, i thought DP was coming out a t a good
pace, switchin off with vault releases was the romour
i had heard. Then jerry passes :-( and out comes hundred year hall -
which was scheduled as 3 FTV through july - maybe the changed the name to
be more marketable. I called GDM about a week after the previously
scheduled 3FTV release and the (this is not any sort of racial dig) a
latin sounding woman who couldn't really understand me answered the
phone. I said, did 3FTV come out yet? She was like, Huh? I do not know
wha you are talking about. I eneded up not ordering it when i could get
it cheaper at a record store. Then out comes DP 3,4,5. I liked when we
had about 6 months to digest new music. As it is now, i haven't
purchased 3,4,5. I am still listening to the 100 year hall. Besides, i
have SBDs of DP4 and 5 already.
BTW, everyone WAS probably yelling bruce.

I guess just closing down the whole organization and the Furthur tour is
what you (see below) really want. You don't know their motivations for
releasing the Dick's Picks and X From the Vaults. No one's forcing you to
buy anything and many other people want the opportunity to buy GD stuff
from them. And that's the first I've heard that a record store is
charging less than GDM for one of the Dicks Picks. I don't believe it.
Sounds like another unsubstantiated cheap shot like the rest of your post.
Their prices for the CDs have been extremely low considering the amount of
music you are getting. It's this bitchin about GDM which will end the
organization really fast as this newsgroup is probably read by most of the
people in the organization who have a say in its direction. We are
incredibly lucky to get the chance to purchase these wonderful CDs and to
get that Grateful Dead energy at the Furthur shows. They are a great
organization with great people and I hope they realize most heads really
appreciate them and hope the organization stays around for a long time.

Phil and Hunter read it (at least they have in the past). But of course
you don't want any of what they offer because you already have a good DAT
of it all anyway and they just won't listen to all those good ideas you
give them about stuff to put out. How unfair! (sob)

Indeed, $4.00 for a beer was a bit heavy. Thank God I didn't get
hungry or thirsty too often. I believe that folks were yelling
"Bruce!" rather than booing him.

I will start with my complaints about my interesting day at Darien
Lake. My wife, cousin, friend and I ate a few of our yummy mushrooms
before heading into the park to enjoy some rides. Just before
returning to the parking lot, we were hacking. A security-man,
sunglasses, suit and all came up to us and asked us to stop so "nobody
would get hurt." I said "OK" and put my hack in my pocket. That
should have been the end of it, but he stood there and stared at us.
None of us said anything, and he asked "Is there a problem?" My cousin
asked "Should there be?", upon which we all burst into laughter. Well,
the guard didn't take too lightly to this, and began a staring contest
with my cousin. After about 5-10 minutes we simply walked away. The
whole ordeal was interesting to say the least. The rides were great .
.

Inside the venue, we caught the last three songs of Hot Tuna--they were
rockin' but the crowd was still small. Two problems I encountered: It
was not nice being on the lawn with the sun setting directly behind the
stage--all of us went home burned. Also, the sound system, to put it
bluntly, sucked. Los Lobos came on next, and they sounded as though
they were singing through a megaphone.

Nevertheless, the show was good. Los Lobos, and then Hornsby--these
were my favorites; it seemed we danced forever. And the Karamazov's
provided lots of laughs. I think I ate a few too many of those shrooms
all at once though, or maybe it was because I swallowed some cigarette
smoke . . . Anyways, just before Mystery Box I wound up puking. When
they came on my trip turned sour--I found their music quite disturbing
in that state of mind--it was very dark, sordid . . . I took a trip to
the bathroom half-way through, and people were just standing there
looking around; pausing to think about this strange phenomenon, I found
myself doing the same thing. I stuck around that area until Mickey's
set was over, all the while trying to calm myself. I went back, and
the Karamazov's lifted my spirits again with a ballet. Ratdog came on
and finished the show excellently with the help of Hornsby. By the
time it was all over, I was feeling VERY good again.

Next time around, though, I think I'll choose SPAC over Darien. Wasn't
too fond of Mystery Box, but they put an interesting spin on the
otherwise high scene. I was impressed with Ratdog, but I wonder
whether I would have liked them so much without Bruce backing them up.

Well, I had to get that out--haven't thought of any of it till now. I
would like a tape of this show despite the sound system (if someone
could be so kind as to help me out :) ).

Peace-

--fubar

I think that you've hit the nail on the head, odd as it might seem. I
thought the same thing at Alpine: Why are they booing Bruce? Then when
I was doing my own BROOOCE (try it sometime, it'll make you feel better
:) I stopped and thought about it for a second. All those BROOOOCE's do
sound like booos.

I thought The Grateful Dead sold Grateful Dead Merchandising several years
ago. I thought the increase in sales started before Jerry died and that it
was because the new company had to increase marketing to make a profit.
The Dead didnt need advertising, they were the advertising.

this concept of the dead having sold gdm is well on its way to urban legend
status. the dead did have a deal with george lucas's company. the deal was
short-lived & expired long ago. it was about licensing new products for
