Anyone attend any of these shows ?
I attended the Hartford shows...in between some jerry shows I
believe....always wondered if there were recordings available....I
will do a search.
I saw that tour at the Greeks, I haven't thought of that in a long
time. I'd like to hear a recording too, to see if it stands up, IIRC
it sounded pretty good at the time. No Grace Slick, who was the
female vocalist?

No Grace?...what tour did you see?
The 1989 tour was with Grace/Paul/Marty/Jorma/Casady
Spencer Dryden wasn't asked...they got the drummer from
John Cougar Mellenheads band, Kenny Aronoff.
Jormas brother, Peter, was also in the band
I only saw the Greek Theater show and the free show they
did in Golden Gate Park ( w/Weir&Wasserman opening up)
The GG park show was GREAT...perfect weather & crowd
The only soundboard I've heard from the tour was from
the Garden State Arts Center in New Jersey.....the show
really sucks...I only made it about 30 minutes into it before
I gave up and deleted that nonsense.
....and dont get me started on that studio album!
Long term loss of short term memory. For some reason I don't remember
that show very well, I do remember the Spencer Dryden thing, some
people thought he got dissed but didn't he die not too long after
that. Maybe he wasn't at the top of his game at the time.
IIRC, he injured his back somewhere along the line and stopped
playing.

He died in 2005. There's some classic interview footage on Fly Jefferson
Airplane that he did not too long (or too many years) before he passed away.

Spencer died 3-4 years ago, pennyless, of cancer.
Anyone remember the benefit show they did for him
at Slims in San Francisco...too little too late. Sad.
Jorma and Jack always blamed the '89 tour on Paul
and Grace...they brought in their LA management firm
who called the shots...like adding the 3rd guitar player
(some LA session player) on the tour, and rushing them
into the studio.
Spencer was busy playing every weekend at the time
in San Francisco...Dinosaurs and the various Cippolina
bands...those were cool days...walk into the Saloon
or Chi-Chi club in North Beach every weekend and see
Spencer playing with Barry Melton..Or Cippolina...or
Nick Gravenitis...
Obviously, someone had a beef with him, because he
was very active on the scene.
I saw one of the Radio City Music Hall shows (see this NYTimes story:
http://www.nytimes.com/1989/08/31/arts/review-rock-reunited-jefferson-airplane-still-loose-still-utopian.html).
I remember really enjoying a good chunk of the show but really
cringing at Grace's "Panda."
Grace was there

Dasm! Sweetbac gets maudlin almost. He's right but I could almost see
his (crocodile)tears...
That WUZ Sweet, Dave.
Patrick
I used to have a cassette tape of this way back when.
The reunion was fairly disappointing however it led to an electric HT
reunion in the fall which was pretty good.

Maudlin?....Sammy Maudlin?
Anyways...I bleed just like everyone else, Sach...
So I get emotional sometimes?....is that SOO wrong?
....let me ask you something...whats with the "Sacha" handle?
did you smoke too many banana peels in the commune and
"Sacha" just came to ya?....you'll ALWAYS be Patrick to me...
I'm sentimental that way.
> Saw them at King's Island amusement park in Cincinnati that summer.
Were they billed before or after the Puppet show? Disgusted!
I saw them at Great Woods and it was OK. Kenny's kick and snare
obliterated all the bass and I know for damn sure he wasn't no part of
the 60s San Francisco scene. I don't why the sound guy had to mix it
like that. I wanted to hear powerful bass and big guitars and all I got
was that fucking Wendel sampled snare. Kenny's a fine drummer, but
doesn't exactly have a psychedelic soul.

so you know who thunder and lighting was?

I saw that show too. the sound mix was terrible. the drums over rode every
other instrument.
you could barely hear Jorma.
I gave them a pass because they deserved to cash in.
That would be Louis and George Johnson, respectively.
I saw the show at Pine Knob in Michigan. I thought it was enjoyable,
although there were too many guitar players. The new material was
pretty bad, though.
It was definitely better than the only other JA show I saw. That was
in 1972 at Cobo Hall in Detroit. The band was clearly disintegrating.
Marty had already left, and there was a guy who occasionally came on
stage to sing backup vocals. About a third of the show was Papa John
playing country fiddle tunes, backed up by the band, which was ok,
but not really what I was expecting to hear.
The other weird aspect of it, personally, was that I was asked to go
to the show by a guy I knew since elementary school, but was not
really a friend of mine in high school. I mean we were friendly but
not someone I hung out with.
Fast forward a few years, and I met someone who knew him in college at
U of Michigan. Turns out he was gay, and then I realized that we had
been on a date.
Yup, the HT stuff was nice. I recall very little of the JA set outside
of Embryonic Journey being played.
Probably better you found out years later than that night. NTTAWWT
etc etc.
Yeah I was a little naive in those days. I remember the guy was a real
sharp dresser at a time when most of us were trying to look like
hippies. Maybe that should have clued me in.
In my twenties there were many times that I was aggressively pursed by
gays. I was fairly good looking back then, and have bright blue eyes.
One time a Michigan state senator cornered me at an art opening, and
wanted me to come to his place to see his art collection.
I wish I had had as much luck with women as I seemed to have with gay
guys. :)
Should say "pursued by gays" not "pursed by gays". I can happily say
I've never been "pursed" by gays. :)
