MARK KARAN at 4th St Tavern!!!!!

the HOTTEST shows I've seen in recent months. MK ('single and still lookin')
wowed and thrilled us with that nasty nasty nasty guitar pickin of his, as well
as his little-known singing voice! Austin DeLone was also exceptional tonight
on keys and vocals. Liam Hanrahan did his usual superb job on bass, and Ed the
drummer (didn't catch his last name) packed a helluva wallup, riding that
groove.
Show started at 9:30, and wrapped up at 1:50. They did "Lovelight" for the
encore, smoking Ratdog left and right... if only Bobby would rock this hard.

Some of don't want Bobby do rock this hard. We like nice laid
back Bobby and we miss it! Oh for Rob and Bob to become a duo again...

Valentine treat! Except that he nearly left the Tavern in smokin' ashes......if
you ever get a chance to hear Mark Karan apart from Ratdog/TOO's, by all means be
there....he becomes a whole different animal. He has a warm, rich bluesy singing
voice and when he cuts loose on lead guitar solos, he absolutely rips! (Alright,
jcm, I doff my chapeau in your general direction as a peace gesture: MK/SK, not
interchangeable but certainly equivalent!) And he's such a sweet guy,
too......whadda valentine crooner we had for our *little* (where were all you
guys??) party on 4th St. last night. Thank you, Dave (tavern owner), for letting
us have "just one more" (like, right *up* to the 2:00am mark) so we got that
spectacular Lovelight!! I tell ya, Ratdog, if you don't absolutely court and
feature Mark Karan as a front and center *star*, you all deserve to trail off into
the dust of mediocrity you wuz headed for pre-MK. (I've been burning nye '98 cd's
of late and Mark's show last night was quantum leaps better than anything Ratdog
did at Kaiser....) Wish we had a setlist to post, but I was just having too much
fun to keep one (I tried to just remember; yeah right....). And sorry, *no tapes*
either, as no tapers showed up (duh). Yep, you just hadda be there! [contented
sigh....]
btw, Doug B, word has it you've been tearing it up on keyboards yerself around and
about here on the Marin music scene of late!! You been holdin' out on us, dbud; I
had no idea you're such an accomplished rocknroll-er yerself! MK, take note ;^)
(although Austin DeLone was in peak form last night on keyboards and
vocals!).....also, special thanks to Tiger-Rose in Maryland for the lovely banner
in her excellent calligraphy she sent to us as a surprise - "Happy Valentines with
Mark Karan and Austin DeLone" - I just added *glitter* and voila! - a warm welcome
sign for the boyz....and thanks, too, to Dave Ruffman (above referenced Tavern
owner) for that recent mega sound system upgrade; the Tavern is *way* cool these
daze.....:^) On to Mardi Gras!!!!

yikes. i sure wouldn' wanna wish that on them. or us! (saw the two of
them at the Seva benefit in Berkeley recently and they were terrible, and
I mean, *painful* to listen to! they actually tried to do "One More Sat
Night" as acoustic....yikes.)

*blushing* Thank you for those nice comments... yeah, it's been a a lot of fun,
new keyboards, new musicians, using that "play by the seat of your pants"
theory... it's been great. Yo MK, if Audie isn't available, give me a
ringie-dingie, son; you've got my number... *laughter*
And yes, Austin was tearing it up last night... how about that "What I Say"?
MAN!!! Pamela and I were over in the corner belting out the lyrics.... :-)
But that last song of the set that jelled into "The Other One"... then
"Mountain Jam"... then off it went..... whoa.
Folks, if MK is in town again, do yourselves a favor and come out to the show,
and tapers? PLEASE!

Yeah... geez, I'd just *love* to hear "City Girls" again, or "Stardust"....

I flew to SF from NYC for that NYE show! Had a blast, except that we got a
late start and didn't enter the venue until the middle of China>Rider. Ouch!
Anyway, if you're still burning CD's I would be ecstatic to get a copy of this
show. I can B&P you, if you'd like. I'd also trade with you, but I'm an
analog man when it comes to home set-up :(
I love MK. Interviewed him this summer (I work at VH1) and found him to be a
sweetheart. And his leads on "White Wheeled Limo" - - phew!!

A-men to that! Nice to see you, Doug! It was a great show, and what a blast!
Who else does Austin Delone play with (someone said Commander Cody?) but he
was great -- lots of 'rock star' endings with a big jump <grin>. Both Austin
and Mark sang, and they were both fanTASTIC!
Had a great time; Mark is an incredible singer and guitar player who does a
great job with the rockin' blues. I'm really glad we made the journey from
SF!

Yeah, whadda guy.....he was a real {{valentine}} Sunday night (sigh). I'm tellin'
ya, what we heard Sunday night was way beyond anything he did last summer. Now
whether it's his growth as an artist, or he's just too hemmed in with Ratdog &
TOO's is up to speculation, or maybe it's both. He was just a *force of nature*
Sunday night at 4th St. Tavern. Definitely in *the transportation business*!
Alas, no tapes - oops. :^(
[btw, my favorite Marin band, the *former* Patch of Blues, now the newly formed
"Rhythm Tigers," has just booked a gig at 4th St. Tavern for this Sunday evening,
2/21 @ 9:00pm. *MK* has indicated *he may well show up to jam with them,* as he
will be in town doing recording with John Cutler. So you all may have another
chance to hang out with MK, up close and personal :^). Rhythm Tigers, a hot new
r&b band, is definitely worth the trip to come out for, too!]
