Every time I get fired up about Bill Walton's obvious east-coast
media-inspired hoops bias, he slips in just the right words about Larry
Bird, Kevin McHale, Robert Parrish, Dennis Johnson, and all I can
remember is how psyched I was to hang in his general vicinity at NE Dead
shows during his Celtics tenure, and think life was OK...

As many have noticed Bill Walton is a complete idiot. I propose that
E-Mail NBC at nbcs...@msn.com telling them they think so too. Make the
subject header:

Bill Walton is bad for NBC!

with enough messages like that, they have to listen.

That E=Mail address is: nbcs...@msn.com

hey now,
Ted Lewis propose that we all bombard NBC with E-mail and get Bill Walton
fired. That really sounds like a kind compassionate act. Sometimes I'm
just gobsmacked by the bitterness that occasionally surfaces on this
newsgroup. Opinions are fine and let's voice them but not at someone elses
expense.

Huh? We should e-mail NBC telling them they think Bill Walton
is an idiot? If we can tell them what they think, why don't
we just tell them they think they ought to start airing
historic Dead videos?

BW is refreshing. The guy has the balls to say what he feels. Plus he
knows the game from playing it for many years. I completely disagree with
you. I hope they keep him. You say he is a "complete idiot" yet you
never gave one reason why you dislike him. Sounds like you want a "homer"
that continuously praises your favorite team. Sorry but Bill calls it like
he sees it and I wouldn't want it any other way. In addition he's a
humble intelligent guy and a credit to the human race. I wish him
continued success and urge people to NOT email disparaging remarks to NBC
about a guy with lots of class.

That is hilario(us). Bill Walton says what he thinks and doesn't toe the
NBC corporate line. It is nice to hear people disagree with the "experts".
Reminds me of that Deford character NBC used to have on NFL live. I find
it refreshing when somebody doesn't always agree with the others on
broadcasts. As for the Olympics I don't really give a hoot, I don't care
to watch this over commercialized (pro) athelete extravaganza that displaces
homeless people and others considered undesirable by the corporate (br)ass.

What a joke. Do you listen to the broadcasts. Do you know anything

on just a very few specifics of his Walton's bonehead statements? Gee
if Bill Walton is so great I wonder if ABC plans to replace Ted Koppell

I can't speak for anyone but myself...but, I like Walton.
He was a great, great player and by all accounts is a really
great guy. I can't stand his commentary though...he did all
of the Mavericks games for a while when I lived in Dallas
and so I've heard alot of him. It's just so full of his own
opinions (which also come off kind of stupid alot of the time)
and nonsense. Sometimes you'd think he didn't know a thing
about the game (based on what he says) although it's obviously
not true. I fealt the same about Magic (who was my biggest
NBA hero) when he started doing commentary. I don't think
there is anything bad about not liking Walton's commentary
and if you really dislike it you probably ought to voice
your opinion to try to get him fired (so you don't have to
hear him). I don't think he's exactly going to end up
homeless as a result.

I just hope that they don't replace him with Dick because then
we wouldn't get as many new releases...(unless we send Walton
into the Vault while Dick covers the NBA playoffs...).

Personally, all the corporate sponsorship has really turned me off. That
and the $1,000,000 bicycles U.S. athletes will be riding. I've heard
the Olympic Commity is banning all corporate sponsorship next time. Oh,
don't forget Bill announces pro ball, and pro sports are lame to begin
with.

Aside from all the positive things brings to the table (all detailed above).
BW is also making a positive statement by his mere presence in the announcing
booth. Overcoming a huge hurdle like the speech impediment that he suffered
through during his playing career is an incedible accomplishment and an
inspiration to others who face barriers to their success.

Some feel Bill is angling for a coaching position in his broadcasting. This
may not be entirely inaccurate and is not grounds for cutting him loose (how
many other broadcasters could be accused of the same?).

peace and good things,

Bill also makes a positive statement, that high paying jobs can be
obtained by brain-dead weed smoking doofuses who are more interested
in saying outrageous and contrary things than in making inciteful or
meaningful comments.

Add me to the walton supporters list. as i have mentioned earlier,
walton is a purest and he learned from the master, wooden, and had a
great pro teacher, ramsey. in terms of pure technical basketball,
women's college basketball is more fundementally sound than any game
out there. as to wether it is more entertaining that is a different
question. understand where walton is coming from, it's fundemental
basketball. if nba players focused more on fundemental's, than slam
dunks, then the game would be better. it is sad to see the 10-15 foot
jump shot lost in the pursuit of the slam.

i really don't like bill walton. it's not because he's an idiot (though
i agree with that position), it's because he's always acting like he's
the greatest thing ever to happen to basketball. if he would shut his
huge mouth for about thirty seconds during a ball game, it would impress
more than the eight million useless, negative things that he
constantly has to say about the game. he's forever talking about how the
game has degenerated, and what basketball is really about. i don't know, i
guess i just don't like him and i guess i do think he's an idiot
(somewhat).

glad that the basketball season is over (if only for no more NBC
broadcasts and bulls hype),

I tend to agree - though Bill's been a core Deadhead for years, his commentary
did get old fast. As did the Bulls' hype (and counter hype).

Personally, I'm looking foward to football season - Miami cleaning Dallas'

I completely agree also. Bill Walton is the stupidest and most

he acts like he knows everything about the game, but I would be a

We tend to opt for Hawk & Whimpy, broadcasting White Sox games, for 'worst
in the business' status. Give them a pair of cheerleader skirts & pom-poms,
and let them parade all over the dugout roof if they want, but for sanity's
sake, please keep those losers out of the broadcasting booth! Bill Walton
isn't a very good broadcaster, but at least he knows what he's talking
about, unlike Harry Cary!

What's the deal Jack? Are you a Cleveland fan or something?
I'm from Chicago, and I watch Hawk & Wimpy...They both know a lot about
baseball...I agree Harry isn't quite as animated as he used to be, but
can't you be happy that he's a zillion years old and still doing what he
loves? I'm not a Cub's fan at all, but If I'm down, I can always listen
to the radio, or watch the 7th inning stretch, and be cheered up, cause
HArry's in the house, and he's drunk as hell. And I love him for it,
He's kind of like Rondald Regan, yeah he's old and senile, but you'd

Hank, Did you happen to watch any of the NBA finals? How many times did Bill
scoff and ride Dennis Rodman for his game. If i remember correctly, Mr. Walton
was the exact same way when he played (minus the hair color). He does not
belong as a TV announcer. How many times do you hear Bob Costas get on
someones back for the whole game. You need to open your eyes brother.

Depending on the margin, this may not (the key word is "may") be as
stupid as it sounds.

I've seen many games in which one team (usually the visitors) shoots
for a much higher percentage than its opponent in the first half, only to
see its relatively small lead turned into a huge deficit when shooting
stats turn around in the second half.

I can't help wondering if NBA teams make certain that they'll be
shooting at the "easier" basket (i.e. softer rim, better background) in
the second half of home games.

I'm a Bulls fan who thinks Walton is a rottom commentator regardless
of which team(s) he might be perceived as favoring. In fact, I've yet to
see anyone on the Bulls newsgroup complimenting Walton's performance.

Then I'll put Walton's remark in context, because sadly I had the
misfortune of listening to that broadcast:

half-time differential = 1 point

Phil Jackson has commented on this on a few occasions. I think the
visiting team gets to choose the basket they start at. Jackson prefers to
shoot at the basket near the bench during the first half, so that he can
direct his defense better in the second half.

Maybe it was in his book "Sacred Hoops" that he mentioned reversing this
strategy once, because the players felt the far basket was tighter than
the close one.

I'm a Bulls fan who thinks Walton is amusing. Sure, he's a terrible
commentator, and sometimes I have to turn off the sound because it's
driving me insane, but occasionally I enjoy listening to Walton's
commentary. He makes some amazing statements. I would feel a little
deprived if he left NBC.

OTOH, I don't know how many times I've told friends that I wish Bill
Walton were in the room with us. I wouldn't have to spit sunflower seeds
into my McDonald's Walton cup if I had the real thing to spit at.

during his entire career. I would do anything to get that guy fired, just

walton talks like he never made a mistake. just like saying that a team
that went to the ncaa finals back-to-back was overrated(damn they were
freshman and sophomores, how many jrs and srs would have loved that). he
talks to damn much for a man who was injured nearly every year(so he
should NEVER talk about any other player who gets hurt) and averaged
only 13pts and 10rebs for his career! how did he get in the hall, from
college play obviously. how'd he get in the booth, who knows!!

I have tried to listen to Bill, but just can't stand him. Next to Dick
Vitale, he is the most annoying announcer around. Granted, he was one
hell of a college basketball player, but after that, he went downhill. I
am not sure how much he had in bringing Portland a championship, but I
seem to remember him as the Ralph Sampson of the NBA. One big letdown.

He was a very big part of Portland winning the championship along with
helping the Celtics to a championship. The Portland team he was on came
very close to setting the record for most wins in a season. Being an
important part of two teams that won the championship hardly makes him the
Ralph Sampson of the NBA. The bones in his feet were not built for the
rigors of running up and down a basketball court for 3 hours 62 in a 4
month period and they frequently broke. If Walton had not been cursed
with bones that could not take this stress, I believe he would been on
many more championship teams. The guy was great, on the same level with
any of the other great centers of that time and certainly miles ahead of
Ralph Sampson.

"Hard hitting"? Walton hits everyone hard who's not a center or Michael
Jordan. All he does is whine and criticize. It's irritating, not hard
hitting. He also only pays attention to the best teams and doesn't have a clue
about whats going on in the rest of the league. Walton wouldn't know an
insight if it bit him on the ass. I'm with the previous poster. Steve Jones
is much less biased.

Often times being down by that slim ammount of points at the half CAN be a
greater motivator than being up by 5.

>or my altime favorite, Hakeem needs to play facing the basket,...he can

This isn't nearly as ignorant of a statement as you think it is. The
greatest center to ever play the game, Kareem Abdul Jabar, was at his most
dangerous when his back was turned away from the basket. A quick turn to
his left or right, and that gracefully deadly skyhook would usually find
its mark, and frustrate opponents because that made him even harder to
defend. Hakeem following in Kareem's footsteps (or trying to) is nothing to
be ashamed about, but Hakeem is more deadly of a shooter facing the basket.
His quick turnarounds miss the mark more often than did Kareem's. And,
Walton knows a bit about Kareem and playing center.
