so the Seaphood have never really clicked for me, until now that is.
Tremendous cover of this great great song, from their Halloween cover-
a-classic-album (this time Exile). They really nailed the soulful,
chaotic, swinging feel of the original, and although McConnel can
hardly be blamed for not having a voice like Mick's, he really does a
nice job, and his piano is perfect. Fantastic production with the
horns and gospel singers too.

kudos to all the phishies out there; I'll eat just a little crow now.
shows what they can do when working with great material from real
songwriters.

. . . or when the leader of the band is cleaned up and off the drugs.

Have a look at any of the vids from Coventry (2004). Trey looks like
he's dying. A good example would be Wading in the Velvet Sea but I'm
reluctant to point to that particular song because it was such an
emotional happening, rarely seen live and on stage with *any* band,
with Page needing to stop mid song to compose himself before
continuing, and Trey and Page actually shedding tears. I'm not
pointing to it to showcase the human side of these guys which is a
good and positive thing, but rather how horrible Trey looks. He just
doesn't look healthy, in fact he looks like he's in pain and near
death. At least that's my take on it - I wasn't listening to or
paying any attention to these guys in '04.

These days, he looks like a million bucks. And his playing is
reflecting that.

You know, I was kind of hoping it wasn't just me. I started out
really disliking this band, grew to appreciate them, and now feel as
if I am on the verge of really getting it. I only live 75 miles from
Indio, and DIDNT GO. Kicking myself in the ass pretty good right
now. I listened to much of the show on Sirius and thought it was
really good. The acoustic set was top notch (in portions), and their
electric jams seem a little different... really should have camped
out with my buddies that weekend.

Whatever the cause, be it sobriety, time away from the office or
whatever, this band is clearly doing something just different enough
from before to enable me the opportunity to really dig it.

Heh. Me too. And the kicker, after getting done handing out candy that
night, I threw on Exile for the first time in probably a year, without
a clue...

Well, for what it's worth, I never really got Phish..saw them once in
2003 and was meh...but I started listening to their Hampton shows from
March '09 and began really, really digging it...and saw them on the
summer tour opener at Fenway. 3 more shows in the next few weeks and
I was, and am, seriously hooked. Live, these guys are a blast.

Looking forward to seeing shows in Philly, Albany and Portland next
week.

I caught their show Wednesday night in Detroit. It was a solid
rocking show. Been on their bus since 94 and I'm really amazed how
they've stepped up their game since their last hiatus. Trey can be
machine gun Trey at will again. But they have a lot of tricks in the
bag they can pull out. Very high energy, a fun band, the curious
should check them out. 50 bucks is a bargain for a band this good.

Nice to hear. I have been seeing them live in the northwest since
their first visit here in 1991. The heyday years of '93 - '97 produced
many incredible, blazing live shows. I began liking them outside of
any comparisons with the GD. There was no correlation to me, it was
just another band with another flavor. And I had many tasty,
satisfying nights with them.

After the disappointing last few years they played, along with
smothering and obnoxious crowds, 2009 has been a very good year for
them. I highly recommend gathering some recorded shows from '93, '94,
and '95.

I saw them at Monterey Racetrack 94 and it was pretty blazing, haven't
seen them recently but I thought the Trey Anastasio Band in 2000 or 01
was just as blazing. I'd love to check out the current version.

No correlation, you say?

Yeah, Andrew, I know. You are right in the same neck of the woods and
we have never met (unless i am spacing out, or something). We have
regular, Dead-friendly, Poker games and a pool in the summertime...
you really should come over some day. Deadheads are always great
guests, you want them to stay over for a long time and if they annoy
you and you want them to leave you just throw some Vince stuff on and
they are outta there!
