I picked up this list recently and thought now that summer is gettin
warmed up some tapers out there might find it handy-

Happy tapin-

Dear fellow tapers: This is an updated verson of the list that I last
updated on 01-05-96. I tend to update this list once every two months.
I want to take this time out to thank all of you have emailed me with
your kind additions and corrections.
Please examine the list below and correct me if I have included any
misinformation. Also, updates are in order, as the bands' taping policies
often change with time.
Note that (a) = audio taping allowed, (v) means video taping allowed
and BA = (sound)board access allowed. "ana" refers to analogue taping
and "dat" to DAT taping. <> represents the hometown of a band. BTW,
if you see <?> after a band's name, please help me locate their home-
town. Also, if you don't see "BA" after the band's name, you can
assume their official policy is to not allow it, even if they
occasionally do. Finally, a "no see, no enforce" policy means that
they are sort of indifferent to taping and as long as you're not obvious
about it (i.e., mike stand or have the mikes out and exposed for the
rest of the world to see), they won't bother you. Enough preamble, let's
get into the list.

You might have noticed that I eliminated the Grateful Dead from the
list. This is because of the announcement by the surviving members of
the band they will no longer play under that name. Since Ratdog (Bob
Weir's solo project) does not allow taping, we can't assume that the
other members' solo projects will allow it either. Only time will tell.

Many newer/smaller bands will allow taping if you arrive early and
chat w/the band. You may find yourself promising the band a copy and
getting their address/phone # in return. Audio, video and soundboard
access are always possible, but in some cases the venue may have
restrictions or fees, even after you get permission from the band. $50
is common for video and a $20 "tip" for soundboard access is not
uncommon (fees in your city may vary). Thanks to Gary Davis for this info

I have made so many additions/changes from last time that it's time-
prohibitive to try to list them all here, but if you have any questions
or suggestions to improve this list, please let me know. As always, if
you know of any other groups allowing taping that I haven't listed here,
please let me know so I can share it with all the others out there who
might benefit from it. As I mentioned above, I'm currently trying to
complete the info on where each band is from, i.e., where they play the
most concerts, thus where one is most likely to be able to catch them and
tape them. Please help if you can. Finally, you are encouraged to share
this list with any and all forums/newsgroups/lists that stand to benefit
from it.

In music there is peace,

Kurt

Update:
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones allow video taping at certain shows. I saw
several video cameras at the 'Tones show in Nashville. It was a free show
with no entry points with signs saying No...No...No....(Dancin' In The District)
Get there early and scout 'em out. They love taping and tapers, and sometimes
video is ok, depending on where they play. Bela is from New York, the Wootens are
from Virginia. The Flecktones are based in Nashville TN. Bela lives here as
well as Future Man and Victor La-Monte...Woooooooooooooo-ten!

-- Side Band the WOOTEN BROTHERS play several times a month in Nashville
at Third and Lindsley. (Thats the name of the club on the corner of 3rd Ave.
South and Lindley ;-) Non-Flecktones Joe Wooten (Steve Miller keyboardist)
and a few other Wootens jam! When the tones are in town, you never know
who is going to show up ;-) For a while, they were there every Wednesday.

Peace

The David Nelson Band and the New Riders of the Purple Sage allow and
encourage taping at their shows. In fact, last summer at the Bottom Line
in New York, John Dawson went to bat for a taper against the club owner
(guess who won?).

The consensus among the two bands I work for is that taping does not cut
into record sales at all, and in fact, serves to augment popularity. Tape
away!

You can add Blew Willie to the list of bands that ENCOURAGE it.(that
way we can be removed from the list of bands begging for it.)

btw-speaking of begging, Blew Willie and friends at the Family Dog May 23rd.
More bands to be announced :)

The SCREAMIN' CHEETAH WHEELIES are warming up to the idea of taping shows,
and tapes are out there. If you get there super early and talk with them,
give the usual "no selling, just for trading..." line. Seek out the band
or crew members. Since I know most of the band, I may have a bit of an
advantage, but these are very cool dudes, they WAIIIILLLLLL, and will send
your mind into orbit!

Of course you can just do the stealth thing....

Peace
Neil
