My *dream* opening band would be Bob Marley and the Wailers (hey, the boys
could open for Bob Marley--that'd be cool too). But since we all know that
my dream will not come true (at least not on this plane of existence), then
how 'bout the Radiators or Hot House Flowers (have they ever opened for the
Dead?)--uh....no pun intended.

Actually, that's not too far from true. One of _my_ fantasy openers, Bob
Marley and the Wailers, was almost for real, in March 1981 at U. of
Maryland (aka "Terrapin Station"). When I bought the tickets in early
February, Bob and his pals were listed as the "special guests".
Obviously, this gig had been booked before the extent of Marley's cancer
was discovered, Marley was hospitalized and, of course, died shortly after.

Marley had only been gone a short while when the Cole Field House show
was played, without him or the Wailers. Shame; what a show that would've
been. Bob, I-mon miss you; happy birt'day mon', whereever you are.

Seriously, though, I just got back from a week and a half in Negril, JA,
where I saw Third World play a knock-down drag-out show at the Central
Park ampitheatre there, about ten minutes from our hotel. It was a
kickoff show for their new album, and they really burned the place down.
Since Marley's left us, I'd take Third World, Steel Pulse or Ziggy Marley
and the Melody Makers for the opener.

The reggae band I'd like to see with the Dead would be Steel Pulse. They
are incredible. However, the setting would have to be just right for
this show. I'm thinking the Matel Community Center near Garberville
(Electric on the Eel). Beautiful, sunny, good vibes everywhere! When do
tickets go on sale?

BTW, I just have to say that Phish would kick ass too. I think the Dead
would have to open for them though. :) Unless you're talkin pre-'90 Dead.

I really don't know if it would be a good idea to have any of these bands
opening for the Dead. All three of them play with such a high amount of
energy that everybody in the crowd could be too tired to dance by the time
the Dead play. I guess the only way to find out is to see it happen.

The Pat Metheny Group. Of course, he would then sit in with the Dead.
Anyone who has heard him knows that he would tear The Other One to shreds
with his synclavier and would bop thru the changes to Eyes with incredible
fluency. But I don't think Jerry would dare spare with a guitarist so much
more technically accomplushed than he.

Miles did in fact open for the GD in the '70s at one point, for two shows.

reunion of the Jefferson Airplane, CSN&Y, The Allman Brother's Band,
Santana, a reunion of Cream and finally The Grateful Dead. The MC's
would be William Burroughs and Hunter Thompson.

Tim is on to something here. I saw these guys in Lisner Aud.
on GWU in DC. I'd love to only see them open for the dead, but I'd
love to see Bela play with the Dead. I don't remember the bass players
name, but my God what a talent. Also, I'd love to see "space age man"
or "future man" whatever the drummer calls himself, add his magic
to drums. Now that would be a show.

Dave Mathews!!!! Rusted Root is definately a good choice. What about
Phish? I thought the Allman's would be a good choice but the Allmans
opening for anyone is a little wierd. Little Feat would be another great
opener or maybe Steely Dan? Just Some thoughts.

I agree completely :) I've been trying to see RR for a little while
having recently been hooked on em, but have yet to see them live. Having
them open at a show would be tooooo incredible to even dream about...
let's all cross our fingers for a longshot :)

What about Neil Young? Maybe or maybe not an opener, but at least worthy
of sharing the bill...

Just think, if they played together...

Not likely, but one can dream! They did play together at the Bill Graham
Memorial, playing (I think) Forever Young.

if the Dead and Rusted Root were to play together, more
positive intense cosmic energy would be generated than
at any other show ever. of all the bands in the world,
rusted root is the only other band i will keep going back
for.... and going back for... and going back for.... after
the *sniff* time the dead have passed on. nice to know there
is another group of people that provides an energy experience
just as intense as (but different than) the dead.

No question about it... The Black Crowes.

Now some of you might critisize a contemporary band, in favour of a
more traditional one, as old as the GD. But think about, opening bands
are about discovering new talent, and I can think of no other band
today, which has the potential of the Black Crowes. Their last album
wasn't as good as their first two, but I envision a long and rewarding
career for them. Have you seen what older musicians like Joe Cocker
look like? Pity city! Most of the bands that grew up with the GD are
washed up and are best remembered in their original state.

I would love to see the Dead play with the Allman Bro's again. There are
tons of ABB songs I want to here Jerry play on, and most Dead songs Dickey
Betts could rip to. Just a thought.

None. I'd love to walk right in, sit right down, let my hair hang down and
listen to THEM.

Mmh. Coming to think of it, THEM wouldn't be so bad. But THEY, of course, are
unfortunatately no longer with US.

Who was it that said *Cleaning Windows* was a song to be covered by the Dead?
Don't let me catch THEM.

Neil or Santana would be great, (Santana would be a hot opener), but I'd like
to see Van Morrison or the Pat Metheny Band.
