Do people still pass around massively massive blunts like a bottle of
rum in a hobo camp?
Would I get a contact high sitting in the seats?
(please ignore this paragraph if you have the answer to my question) I
want to take my son to a dead concert this summer, but I am afraid I
may be sending the wrong message. When I was younger I used to get
stoned off my ass, take some lsd and trip like a little bitch; all
while watching Jerry Garcia dance around on stage like a colorful
butterfly in the summer wind. However, times have changed, and I have
reformed.
Hopefully someone will take me seriously and not call me names and not
shun me like a little slut in a mormon camp.
Yours truly,
Sashay Biatch

A lot of us ARE shn sluts.
People still smoke quite a bit of it at shows, but it's nothing like it
used to be. Most venues have their staff keeping an eye out for clouds
of smoke rising up.
> Would I get a contact high sitting in the seats?
I've walked out of a few Phil & Friends shows with a pretty strong
contact buzz, but in larger places like The Dead are playing, I doubt
it'd be an issue.

A friend of mine has decided to bring his (8 yr old) son to a show this
summer. He's not too concerned about his son seeing people lighting up,
but if it happens, he'll discuss it with him and answer whatever
questions he (appropriately) can.
I doubt that I'd bring a kid much younger than that -- but hey, that's
just me...

I'd never shun a little slut. C'mere you...

I've seen Jerry melt amongst other things. But I can honestly say I never saw
him dance around stage like a colorful butterfly. I've never heard that
description before. Thats a new one. Sjer

Why does this NEVER happen to me?
Oh yeah, because any contact buzz I may have is overshadowed by my own
self-inflicted one.
Hmmmmm. will there be pot at a dead show.
does a bear shit in the woods?
Of course there will be, but he will be exposed to it sooner or later.

Me to. I dont believe I ever had a contact buzz.
I have two questions for you:
Jerry danced?
What makes you think Mormons shun sluts?

Ummmm...... No.
Right about what?. Nobody complained about people smoking at shows, or
'not being able to handle it' -- nor was anyone's parade being rained
on.
The original poster simply asked whether smoking was prevalent at Dead
shows these days and expressed a bit of (understandable) concern that it
might not be an appropriate place to bring her son.
When you're thinking about bringing a child to a show, that's not an
unreasonable thing to ask.
Unfortunately, it appears that brohipster seems to be somewhat lacking
in reading comprehension and jumped to a conclusion that wasn't there.
Perhaps all those heady nugs and kind buds have made him a wee bit
paranoid about his smoking habits...
I remember shows in the early 80s where we'd light up right in front of
security (this was in So. Cal), and they'd ask us if we could turn them on
to some. Times have changed.
Two answers: Yes and maybe.
You might consider getting general admission lawn tickets. You would
have more control over where you want to sit and who would be around
you.

I haven't seen the Dead since 1975... so I'm talking out of school
already... but if you and your kid aren't stoned when you arrive, you
probably will be stoned (though only a very little bit if you're not hitting
directly off what's passed your way) before the show's over.
And in answer to the OP's main concern (which is misplaced, IMO, but let me
assume your heart's in the right place)... honey, you came through your drug
days OK, right? You made choices that steered you well through your drug
days and beyond... and if you've been a half decent parent, so will your kid
if he chooses to go there.
Don't sweat it, OK?. There are a lot worse things in this world than
introducing your kid to a bunch of peaced-out freaks so he can listen to
some wholesome (no, I'm not kidding) and entertaining words, music and
stories. Let him make up his own mind about those fatties people are
passin' round.

I can testify that it has happened at least once. 1978, my older
brother took me to the San Rafael HS to watch "Fillmore". I know it may
be hard to believe, but a few people were smoking weed in that
auditorium. I remember seeing colorful hallucinations, feeling
disoriented and fuzzy headed. Quite some time later, I realized I was
high that night. Compare the quantity of smoke in that room with just
about anything (other than the bacon curing room at Oscar Mayer) and
perhaps that was an extreme example of excess smoke. Sitting on a lawn
outdoors? Doubtful but I would not be so quick to rule it out
completely.

Oh, c'mon. Weed in San Rafael?

already have made such arrangements...
