Debra Koons, in a interview that appeared in Rolling Stone, confirmed
that a death threat was made against Jerry before this year's
Deer Creek show.
I was at that show and was wondering if something was up because:
1. They used a metal detector at the turnstiles.
2. Before the show started, someone came out on the stage and carefully
videotaped the crowd.
3. The audience lights were left on for the entire show.
The first two occured BEFORE the riot.
As my kids and I were going in, I heard a squeal from the entrance right
next to the one I was going through. The patron who set it off the metal
detector threw something metallic in the trash can and said "Never mind.
I am not going in". The ticket-taker yelled for security and the
patron took off. I didn't want to create a 'gappers block'
(or get caught in cross-fire), so I quickly herded my kids through
the gate. I don't know what happened to guy.

-> yes, that's why metal detectors were used at the Deer Creek gates, and
-> the crowd filming; and I understand the FBI was around.

And the lights were on throughout the entire Creek show and the first River-
port show. Also there were observers with binoculars in the 2 perches above
the audience. This was also a contributing factor in the decisons to cancel
the 7/3 show and contemplate cancelling the 7/2 show. Cameras were looking
like guns to the boys, the band's chief of security spent the entire show up
on the stage with them & they attempted Death Don't Have No Mercy during the
soundcheck. I think the death threat was attributed to or responsibility was
claimed by a white supremacy group. I sure hope the assassin did not make a
visit to the Serenity Knowles facility. :_(( peace, further... eric

My 2cents.
-> I was staying at the Radisson for d.creek (where the band stayed; I met
-> jer after the show :) :)), and word was that someone had called the
-> Radisson and somehow made the threat thru either someone at the hotel, or
-> to someone in the organization. seems doubtful it could have gotten thru
-> to Jerry's room directly.
I was told by someone in the organization early on the morning of Sunday July 2
the death threat was received by the venue.

We flew there and home, as it turns out, for just one show. July 3 would
have been Jill's last show. So July 2 was Jill's last show and possibly
her favorite among the several dozen she caught (more than 1/2 of them w/
me over the past year!) but what a hassle getting there on July 2. Boone
and I left the hotel hours before the show time. He had to run and wave
down a motorcycle dude (you out there brother?) to just catch the s-check
and I had to attempt at least 4 different approaches to the parking field
before abandoning Janet's rental car in someone's lawn for a few dollars.
Made it into the show at about 7:20; fortunately the start was delayed at
least 45 minutes. And the boyz didn't have much of an easier time gettin
out of that place after the show! Anyway, in response to the above post:

We had killer seats in the Phil Zone for 7/3/95. Still have 'em in fact.

Hold on a second... I want to set the record straight here. My
post quoted there was an attempt at levity in an unrelated thread
about someone selling his tape collection at cost. I did not post
that in response to this thread about the death threat in Deer
Creek. There ain't nothing funny about death threats.
Oh, and even though I made a joke about it, I am sorry that a bunch
of people missed out on that last Creek show due to the thoughtless
actions of a few assholes. Especially considering that that 7-3
show would have been the last for several people. Sometimes you
just gotta laugh to keep from crying.

-You know this song, it ain't never gonna end.
It's all the more impressive that the Boys put on and completed the show,
considering the threat in the 1st place, and the subsequent gatecrashing
fiasco. It was basically a disaster, but the fact that they kept it
together and delivered a decent 2nd set still blows me away. (c'mon
y'all, let's hear about some crazier situations that they've jammed
through!)
For the record, Jerry reacted musically: right after the heinous crowd
roar, as the first wave of idiots came over the hill, Jerry let out a
poignant howl with the pitchbend/octave-divider thingy ("byeeeerowww").
He used it a lot during Scarlet-Fire too, and hearing that sound at the
campground all weekend on tape, figuring it had been the final Deer
Creek show, was eerie as hell.
And on a negative note, our anger at the gatecrashers is all the more
bitter now, as the cancelled 7/3 show *would have been* so many people's
last chance to see and hear Jerry Garcia.

Yeah, but that's just us snobs that happened to actually buy tickets that are
angry...think about how those poor unfortunate almost gate-crashers feel.
I heard an Indiana interview where someone who was in the lot was interviewed,
and when asked if they got in, the response "no, I didn't get in, but I wish I
would have, now that tonight's show is cancelled."
some people never got it...
