Hello, Folks.:-)

First off, I want to say a VERY warm thank you to those who have responded.
I would also like to thank Martin Lefkowitz and Eric Fischer on their
indirect contributions, which point out the obstacles we have to overcome.

I would like to thank the following who have contributed ideas so far:
Leora Lawton, Taro "MoBo" Tsuzuki, Chris, Joanne "rats" Petersen,
Michael Tindell, Ed Lalonde and David Fischer. Please forgive
me if I did not mention your name.:-)

So far, some suggestions I would like to bring to the net:

1. Changing the title of the flyer - Leora made a good point that the
title "Turn The Other Cheek" is a Christian saying of sorts.
Her idea for the title was: "What I Want To Know Is Are
You Kind". I thought up of one as well: "A Selfish Heart Is
Trouble, But A Foolish Heart Is Worse".

2. The respect of the locals - yes, we DO have to respect the property
of others.

3. A large sign or booth outside the venue - Thanks, Mobo.:-) A
large sign would bring the attention of those folks passing
by at show, and would arouse their curiosity.

4. Changing the name of the group - Chris suggested changing this to
either USENET/rec.music.gdead ot DEADNET. I can see where
elitism could take place, despite none actually intended. Does
anyone have any ideas for the name of the group at this point??

5. The following message at the end of the flyer (thanks, Joanne:-)

PLEASE PASS THIS FLYER TO SOMEONE ELSE, OR DEPOSIT IT IN A TRASH
RECEPTACLE SO WE DON'T ADD TO THE GARBAGE LEFT BEHIND.

I like this suggestion a LOT!!! Opinions, folks??

6. Garbage bags - while it would be impossible to pass out garbage
bags with each flyer, it IS possible to pass it on to those who
are interested to help out.

7. Concerned Fellow Travellers - this coincides with number 4. Mike
suggested to place this for the name.

8. Concentrate on behavior at smaller venues - Ed suggested this with
Deer Creek in mind. I'm for a statement that woudl suggest this.
Comments?

9. Using song lyrics to grab the attention of people AND to keep those
from throwing out the flyer and saving it as a memory - I like
this suggestion a lot, too (thanks, David:-)!! The only minor
problem with this is that logic says we have to obtain permission
from the Dead organization in order to do this.

To DAVID GANS: when you have a chance out of your busy schedule,
could you PLEASE email me the address where I can bring
the suggestion of this flyer AND for permission of use
of song lyrics???? I would send this AIR MAIL so when I
receive a reply, we can all have time to finalize
the flyer. The song lyrics that would be used are the length
of the ones in your book (PLAYING IN THE BAND) or the
ones I use at the end of my postings. Thank you very much.:-)

10. Type of paper used - Obviously, I think colored paper would work
here. I have access to a LaserWriter and would print off
copies and XEROX them. I am willing to handle the paper
costs.

Also a few comments. Obviously, Martin and Eric have pointed out that
our efforts made can go for naught. However, I do believe that
it is better to make an effort than not one at all. I know that
there is NO way that every person will take the flyer in effect.
Yet, I believe there are those that WILL respect this flyer, if
done properly. To Martin and Eric: I would like to hear
more input from you gentlemen as well. There was also a suggestion
made by Taro to have some message put on the net t-shirts made by
Maya. To me, that would be a nice idea, but it would also, I think,
be a severe inconvenience to her, as there is enough time, and that
the addition would cost more.

So, we do have some things to overcome: a growing audience, smaller venues
becoming free-for-alls, potential venue problems a la the Pittsburgh
Civic Arena and others I think we all know about.

Still, I feel we can't just take this sitting down. Again, suggestions are
VERY welcomed. Thanks to all of you who contributed and for taking
the time to read this.

Catfish John W.

P.S. - As for the NICKNAME THE VENUE CONTEST, I am still accepting nicknames.
My deadline: June 24th.:-)

My 2 cents on Monday 6/19 Shoreline
-----------------------------------

First, the Music..

Thanks to a last minute miracle, I got seats directly
in front of Jerry, sec. 102 row P. From where I was standing,
this was unquestionably one of the loudest Dead show I've
ever heard/seen/felt (I've been to a few, really). All of
the high frequencies were boosted, particularly Bobby's vocals.
Healy had it turned up so loud that it fed back with the mikes
a number of times; I saw Jerry cupping his to prevent this.
But don't get me wrong, I LIKE it loud!!!

Stranger started kind of disjoint, but the jam was first-rate.
Jerry was absolutely gyrating, very animated. Franklin's
started with incredible energy, but Jerry seemed to be having
problems with the vocals and his voice was a bit fried. Great
instrumentals, tho. Towards the end of the song, before the
last verse, Jerry started using his slide. Then, he just
punted the last verse of Franklin's and went into Walkin'
Blues. Very unusual stuff, keeps 'em guessing. The rest of
the set was up and down; AWEsome solo on Candyman, but Bird
Song was not very inspired. (I'm sure some folks will disagree
with me here. The jam was VERY long, but I just thought it
got repetitive...)

Second set opened with China -> Rider, all very smoking. On
the final solo of Rider, Brent did an extended tasty piano
solo. When Brent was done, Bobby started up to the mike, but
Jerry cut him off with a raucous heavy-metalish solo. After
a couple bars of that, Jerry started up to the mike, but then
he realized that he was playing really well and went around
a couple more times. This was one of the highest points of the
show for me. Playin' followed, with a nice jam afterwards.
After that, Jerry wandered into Crazy Fingers. (I had been hoping
for Terrapin...oh well. Crazy Fingers seems to highlight Jerry's
ability to come in late and tentative on lyrics. I'm sure I'll
get flamed, since lots of folks seem to worship CF.)

After drums, we got yet another I Will Take You Home. This is
the 3rd time in my last 4 shows that they have played this
Day-Care Anthem. Is this the "Guerrilla Rock" that Phil
has referred to in the past? :-). Watchtower took a while to
gel but finally did. Jerry pulled an absolutely CLASSIC
Rockus Interruptus by going into Black Peter with no transition
whatsoever. Throwing -> Away was killer for a change, with
Jerry playing some really innovative stuff on Not Fade. Knockin'
was good, as usual.

Overall rating: Very good, but not excellent. Some real highs,
though.

Fashion Report:

Everyone agrees that Jerry has lost TONS of weight. Jerry, Bobby,
Mickey and now PHIL are all wearing Pony tails. Phil's was
really tiny, and somehow I think he's just spoofing the concept.

Riot Report:

There were no riots. The lawn was not full. There were areas
of the lawn that were so empty you could drive a small car
through. Very mellow atmosphere. Great venue.

See you Wednesday.

Well folx, subjectivity strikes again! So far I disagree with just about
every negative comment that's been made about this show. The one comment
I agreed with was that it would have been nicer to hear the end of
Franklin's Tower than the smooth seque into walkin'blues...Anyway, a
word or two about specific complaints...

In article <111...@sun.Eng.Sun.COM> nmac...@sun.UUCP (Neil MacAvoy)writes:

This one blows me away, Neil! I admit that going to fewer shows in these
last couple of years has made me less picky, but I thought this song was
incredibly inspired! One of the best Bird Songs I've ever seen.

Ain't no time to flame, you know, but this was probably the first Crazy
Fingers I've ever seen with very cleanly executed vocals, no flubbed
verses, and nice instrumental experimentation at the end...I'm not
interested in finding fault with it, I thought it was wonderful.

I'm probably going to lose my Pickey Deadhead I.D. card over this one,
but I say everything from bird song to the end of set 2 was indeed
excellent, and that the rest of set 1 was very good.

A couple of final comments to HammaH...

> A quick note on the Mon show YAAAYYYYYY!!!!! WOOOOOWWWW!!!!

There! So we agree!8-)

> Fine show
>indeed marred at only two points. A useless Push Comes to Shove in the
>first set

Hey, now! I'm certainly no push-head, but did you miss the jam in the
middle? It actually went somewhere I wanted to go! I liked it.

>and a deadly error in the second. Black Peter was terrible
>and was a horrible choice (oh, was I ready for a DEW!!!). And Throwing
>Stones was the sloppiest version I've ever heard. If it was
>DEW->Playin' playout the show would have been in the mid 9's.

Now here we get into something that I think I felt in Neil's review
also, which is the personal preferences one developes when seeing
multiple shows. Neil was a little pissed off at having seen I Will
Take You Home at 3 of his last 4 shows...I've never seen it before,
and enjoyed the hell out of listening to Jerry's phrasing of trumpet
licks on his midi. I wasn't in the frame of mind to consider _any_
Black Peter to be "a horrible choice" and so was able to appreciate
that this one was very nicely played (although I admit that this is
one song they've never had a smooth seque into).

I'm not trying to rag on Neil's or HammaH's subjectivity, but it is
occuring to me from reading their reviews that taking a couple of
years "off" has really increased my appreciation of a well-played
show...that is there are fewer _forms_ that could bum me out right
now (the only song in the 1st 2 shows I could have just done without
was Saint of Circumstance), so I'm able to give a Push comes to shove
a chance to work on me...I'm open to that possibility at least.
Having said that, they'll probably open the 2nd set tomorrow night
with El Paso->Victim->El Paso and I'll have to try & be open to that!
What the heck, it might just work.

To summarize:

Hats off to the boyz on this one. One hell of a show.
Just when I thought it was safe to stay at home...
