Hey,

I can imagine the complexities of playing the suite live, but did it
ever happen?

Thanks,
Matt

They never did the " ivory wheels " part, but they played the " at a
siding " section at least once in NY... the date escapes me but I have a
tape (somewhere)...

As far as I know, Robert Hunter has been the only one to play the full Terripan
Suite rarely. IMHO, the GD would have had an insanly hard time playing this one
as it is the open tunings that give it the perfect "Texture"......

Yup. Deadbase refers to it as Alhambra. It was out west in '77. I'm at
work and don't have access to the info but they did do it once.

They did it once the same year the started playing it. I have it as filler
somewhere at the end of one my tapes. Sounds funky, but I can understand why
they never continued to play it. If Unbroken Chain was tough, this was
downright impossible to pull off night after night. If I can find it, I will
let everyone know.

{The second part of "Terrapin" isn't nearly as complicated as "Unbroken
Chain". Based on the 3/18/77 performance, it may have gotten axed because
it was sort of quiet and low-energy and didn't really go anywhere, but
it's nowhere near as "challenging" musically as "Unbroken Chain".}

Art, you are entitled to your opinion, but I stand by mine. By means I am no
expert, but from just listening to both songs, I feel that the whole Terrapin
Suite would be more difficult to pull off than Unbroken chain. Hey, I could be
wrong, it wouldn't be the first time. This is just my opinion.

Wasn't the Terrapin w/ Alhambra the 2/26/77 show in San Bernadino, CA?

Nope. 2/26/77 is special because it's the first Terrapin ever. The
Terrapin with Alhambra is indeed 3/18/77.

The Terrapin from 2/26/77 does contain the 2nd part. As far as I know, this is
the only time it was played.

No, the Grateful dead did not ever do the full Terrapin Suite..... The Suite of
course includes "Ivory Wheels on a Rosewood track" and "Jack of roses" and as
far as I know, the only GD Family who ever played them was Robert Hunter....
"T. Flyer" and "At a siding" aren't parts of the Suite....

No, it was 3/18. 2/26 was the first Terrapin but played the same way as
most versions.

A friend of mine once told me about a "jam band" that did a reworked
version of the Terrapin suite, does anybody know who?
